The Chef’s Menu was outstanding. 8 courses sounded like a lot, but portion sizes were appropriate and the flavors were exceptional. Their sake wine menu was also unusually good - plenty of hard to find, truly special, artisanal sakes.

EXTREMELY slow service. The food was mediocre and serving white wine (by the glass) at USD 35 per glass without announcing the price is ludicrous. I have been going to Masa for many years. I won’t come again.

Charging $10 for still water in NYC is not acceptable.

The food and service is top notch and consistent with the Chef Masa philosophy of simplicity. The use of truffle is a nice touch to Japanese food. I typically not a dessert person but the dessert is very good as well.

What a great experience! I highly recommend the chef’s tasting and ordering the ‘Heat’ drink. The food is phenomenal and the service is great. The staff really care about your experience and it shows. The manager’s personal touch to ensure we got the most out of our experience was also very nice and appreciated. I plan on stopping back in the next time I am in New York.

This hidden contemporary Japanese gem is located underneath the Gagosian Gallery where an elevator takes you down. I was greeted very warmly by the host who escorted my friends and me to a table right in the center of the dining room. My friends and I shared the “special” which consisted of a fluke, celery, finger lime, and herbs. It really blew my mind away. The combination of ingredients worked well together in texture and flavors. We also shared the Masa Toro Tartare with Caviar, Russian Kale Julienne Lemongrass Vinaigrette, Yuzu Miso Cod, Scottish Langoustines Salsa Verde and the Beef Juju which was recommended by our server. Our server coursed out our meal with cold/hot items and made sure we had proper utensils. The Blue Flower cocktail was very refreshing and my friends really enjoyed the Heat cocktail. It’s truly a unique dining experience where the whole staff worked together as a team. Viewing the open kitchen and seeing how things are prepared was exhilarating. Oh, and I also ate next to a Pablo Picasso painting!

Service was warm and attentive. Warm towels were much appreciated since we ordered several messy dishes. Food was great. My husband and I shared everything. Wines were tasty though a bit pricey.

Unfortunately they were out of the soft shell crab which sounded amazing and they were out of the Lady M dessert.

Having lived in Asia for several years and visited Japan many times this did not live up to basic Japanese standards. The sushi rice was not the right seasoning or texture, the rolls are overpriced for what they are and the overall feel is that of Nobu but without the balance of flavors.

Thanks to my friend, Ellen, I’ve been having beautiful sushi here with each visit to NYC (I'm from SF). I raised a bunch of little epicureans who accepted my invitation to join me for lunch - they ordered beautifully and it was ALL delicious! 😋
We ordered the large sashimi appetizer, tempura donburi, tempura soba, a bento box, unagi donburi, crispy duck foie gras tacos, corn and shiso leaf fritters, eggplant with shishito fritters in savoury miso honey, (the obligatory) nigiri selection, green tea ice cream, miso crème brûlée, Macha millefeuille, cocoa black sesame ice cream...🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟to the chef and his staff for 👌🏼timing and ensuring hot landed hot and cold arrived cold.

As expected, the food at Kappo Masa was extraordinary, par for the course with Masa. The restaurant is beautifully designed and very classy, and the sushi counter is perfectly set up for interaction between the chef and patron. The prices are astronomical, but that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who is eating here. I ordered the $170 omakase special, and was delighted with each spectacular piece prepared one at a time and given directly to me by the chef. If you are prepared to spend that kind of money for a special occasion, then you will find the food—and the experience—indeed worth it.

BUT.

Why not a five star review? Along with the omakase, I ordered a bottle of the house hot sake. It arrived, as usual, in a small ceramic carafe, and was quite good. No problem. I then received the check. $170 for the food? No problem. Charge for the house sake? $85! Problem! I do not believe I have ever felt so taken advantage of...and particularly at a well known restaurant with a great reputation. Is it wrong to have a wine list of expensive sake? Not at all. Is it wrong for someone to order the house sake, served in a carafe, and be charged $85(!) without any type of warning from the waiter? Yes it is wrong, and it is outrageous.

Excellent sushi and service. Somewhat pricey, but generally worth it except for the lack of reasonably priced bottles of wine. There were no choices under $100 and few below $200.

If you are looking for great food and friendly service the Kappo Massa is the place. If you read that it is expensive then you can believe that although if you choose wisely it doesn’t have to be. I was there with a friend I had not seen in a while and we just let the chef choose and this is probably the most expensive option but we’ll worth it. At the end of the evening the nor’easter had hit and neither of us brought an umbrella. I had been out all day and had not been back to my hotel and had not even thought about it. The host did not give it a second thought and went into the back room and came out with an nice umbrella that he said we could have. Very nice touch. I will definitely return next time and try so of my favorites from the chefs’s tasting menu. btw we thought the selections we going to keep coming all night...bring your appetite.

When it comes to Japanese food in New York City, you often do not get what you pay for, but at Kappo Masa, you most certainly do. So when you wince at the menu, understand you are also getting top quality food, prepared with finesse and sourced from the best places. You are also getting top-notch service in a very cosmopolitan setting. Surprisingly, we had no problem getting a Saturday night reservation on short notice (though I bet it is a different story in the Winter) and didn't know much about the place except its pedigree (renowned chef meets renowned art dealer). Everybody in my party was not only satisfied, but raving about the food, service and setting. The menu is vast, and will satisfy most of your requests. It is complimented by a comprehensive wine and sake list. My litmus test for Japanese restaurants for me is tempura and sushi. Well, the tempura was fantastic, not at all greasy, but light and tasty. The sushi was of pristine quality, the kind that is getting harder and harder to find anywhere outside of Japan (where some of it is sourced). So bring your appetite and enjoy one of the better dining experiences you can find.
