We loved it! Food was delicious and wine list is great. It has a great lodge feel and big warm fireplaces
The portion size of the fried Brussels sprouts was very generous, but the Rib eye steak was very thin and cooked medium well not medium.

The drinks at Kanu Lounge are amazing. The bar tender we had is a master. On the other hand, the food at Kanu Restaurant was simply terrible. The scallops were not fresh and were very salty - not edible. The steak was not of good quality. What a shame for such a beautiful hotel with so many amenities to serve such low quality food. This was extremely disappointing as we had many other options to choose from in terms of restaurants for dinner.

Food was mediocre which was a little disappointing. One would expect much more from this 5 Star Lodge in Lake Placid. We ate the center cut Filet Mignon with truffle mash potatoes and vegetable medley. It was just okay.
On a side note my husband pointed out that why are the lampshades on the massive chandelier all torn?

Kanu seemed slightly understaffed, which could be because it was Presidents Day weekend. My party was one of maybe 4 tables seated, so it's hard to believe we had such a hard time getting a waitress's attention, but once we did, all was well. That being said, we did overhear other patrons having much less enjoyable experiences (food came out wrong/cold, took forever to get the check, etc.). Overall, the lodge and the restaurant were really, really beautiful, the food was high quality, the cocktails were great, but the service was just okay.
Here is a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful hotel that was easy to get reservations for and was not crowded on a holiday weekend. Ut..Oh I didn’t see it coming. We first ask to be not in a corner and in the main dining room but was told no even though there was plenty of tables? My poor wife’s steak was 60% fat. After two bites we pointed it out to the waitress who could care less. She said that is how ribeyes come w/ lots of fat. She then walked away clueless, not saying sorry, let me take it back, or we will take it off your bill. None of my kids liked their meal. We had to beg her for drink refills. No manager came over to check on us. The restaurant would never last with poor food and customer service like this! This is why no one was there......
steak was not good, it had a distinctive odd flavor profile. this was the same for both filets in our group. the pasta dish was bland and quite poor. the brussel sprouts appetizer was very good. the service was alright, but extremely slow. appetizers took approx 40 minutes to be served and entrees were more than an hour and a half from when we ordered. quite disappointed with this experience.
Our experience at Kanu was great! We went for Valentine's Day and had some amazing specials. We also had the scallops off the regular menu which were to die for! We definitely would return!
Possibly the best re-creation of an Adirondack Great Camp ever built, Kanu has spectacular rustic ambiance, a friendly staff and good food. There are 4 (real wood) fireplaces in the dining area, along with comfortable seating and lots to look at. The atmosphere is classy, but not stodgy. ( Background music was 1960's and 70's pop songs). I might have wished for a few more "standard" items on the menu ( no burgers or wings here, folks), but the choices were tasty and seemed worth their pricey cost. Interestingly, the desserts were very reasonably priced. A great date or anniversary choice!

The restaurant was not very busy on this Thursday evening. Staff were friendly but not too familuar with the wine list.
We chose the a very tasty green salad followed by scalops for myself and salmon for my wife.
Value for money was good but the atmosphere was what produced a pleasant evening out.
Very nice place to have dinner, not too over priced. The waitstaff were warm and inviting. Our server was attentive yet not intrusive. My only complaint would be then thickness of the ribeye. Although it had excellent flavor, the steak was quite thin. We are used to 1-1.5” thickness, thus making it a bit dry

We had a great meal at Kanu on Saturday night. The food was delicious. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was memorable. Excellent wine selection. Our server Jenni did a great job.
The menu was fairly limited, the server was friendly but a little slow. I had the scallops and they were good but my boyfriend had the filet and he said it tasted funny in the middle he stopped eating it but still was sick for 2 days after. Beautiful looking resort but probably wouldn’t eat there again
We ordered a bottle of wine but didnt like it. They also couldn’t accomodate veagan. Espresso martini was small and didnt taste good.
We were there at an off peak time but could not have asked for anything more!
With high anticipation, this restaurant was a big letdown. The resort and overall ambiance is fantastic, as the authentic luxury lodge feel with high ceilings and massive Christmas trees was special. The food and service were poor at best. We had "New Years Eve" special menu, witch consisted of three meat options and a fish option for entrees. We were immediately informed that they had ran out of the Pork Loin (by 8pm), which seemed to be the most appealing looking of the 4. The salad I chose for an appetizer was wilted, and had too much dressing on it. I ended up getting the NY Strip steak, which was awful and doused in what seemed like their version of A1. I ordered it medium rare, and it came out charred with little to no color or flavor. The desserts were equally as gross, allowing me to get no further than the first bite. Luckily the waitress realized our dissatisfaction and offered to take the desserts off the menu. Perhaps I caught KANU on an off night, because this was an overall disappointing experience.
Enjoyed the meal, particularly the beet salad and lamb shank. Very tasty. Attentive server that was really good with my celiac gluten free needs up until the end of the meal when he absent-mindedly served me a creme brûlée that had been made with a cookie (a no-no for a Celiac diner). Other than that we loved the ambiance, lovely staff, and delicious food.
We had a very dissapointing dining experience at your restuarant on Wednesday night. We arrived for our 7:30 resevation promptly, and were given menus right away. It was downhill after that. It took a long time for our waitress to take a drink order, and also to take our dinner order. Our appetizer wasn’t served until 9:00, a full hour and a half after we arrived. Most dissapointing of all is that at no time did the waitress or anyone from the restaurant come over to see how we were doing or provide an explanation for the delay. We sat for over an hour with nobody comimg to the table to see how we were doing or offer anotner drink. It took quite awhile for us to get our server’s attention and only until we asked what was status of our appetizers did she disclose that the kitchen was backed up. Finally our meal came out a full two hours after our arrival - and salmon was overcooked and they’d run out of the entree I ordered. For what is advertised as fine dining and the price charged this was certainly not the dining experience we expected. We understand that occasionally there are problems in the kitchen, but in other similar situations in other restaurants a server, or more typically a manager, has come over to proactively explain and apologize for the delay, and generally to offer to provide another drink or dessert on the house. It was the almost complete lack of acknowledgement and attention to our situation that was most dissapointing.

Very good describes food, service, and ambiance - - only the value had to be rated lower because it was pretty pricey. We went the week before Christmas and the beautiful 36' Tree made for a lovely holiday setting.

I had the ribeye and requested it medium-rare it came out medium-well. After it sending it back I received a steak that was so rare it didn’t melt the garlic butter topping. At a place that serves $43 steak they should be able to cook it correctly the first time every time . The ambiance was great but the food was overpriced and disappointing. At least they realized the poor food and removed it from the bill.

We always love the menu and the ambiance at Kanu. We've been coming here for years and the meals are always fresh, fun, and new. The wait staff are great and it's clean and has a wonderful rustic Adirondack vibe that we appreciate so much.

While the service and setting at Kanu were excellent, the food was disappointing. I was visiting Lake Placid for work, and found Kanu ranked high on several dining lists online (including Open Table). The restaurant is located in Forbes' four-star rated hotel, the Whiteface Lodge and Inn. It is a stunningly beautiful hotel, and the dining rooms for the restaurant are equally as gorgeous, with grand A-Frame windows providing scenic views of the surrounding vistas. That said, the food left much to be desired. My work colleague and I shared the brussels sprouts appetizer, which lacked flavor and was heavy with grease. I ordered the chicken Milanese for my entree, with mashed potatoes, green beans and a pesto sauce. The sauce was smothered over the fried chicken, leaving the breading on the chicken soggy instead of crispy. Worse, everything lacked seasoning. Salt and pepper are the seasoning backbone of most dishes, and they were woefully lacking in mine and my colleague's. Had this been a local diner, I would not have expected much better. But this was billed as an upscale restaurant, with prices to match. While the mountain views from the dining room were priceless, they quickly disappeared after sunset - and so did our expectations for a delicious meal. The quality of the food isn't worth the cost. If you're looking for a good meal in small-town Lake Placid, you might consider looking somewhere other than Kanu.
Loved the ambience! The restaurant, and entire lodge, was beautiful! Tables were spaced far enough that you didn't feel you were sitting on top of one another and Could enjoy pleasant conversation. The food and service were fabulous. All in our group had the ribeye steak or filet mignon and both we done perfect, were juicy and very flavorful! Our only disappointment was in the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were much smaller than we anticipated and were butterflied. That being said, the cocktail sauce was one of the best tasting sauces I have ever had so it was enjoyed..just a little underwhelming. We will definitely be going back and I,would highly recommend giving it a try!
We stayed at Whiteface lodge and each night considered going off property for dinner but, soon realized there was no reason to go anywhere else! Excellent
Unique restaurant decor , great for friends and family . We were able to have conversations where everyone at the table could be heard. Food and service was excellent, especially the salmon dish and the tomato salad.
Very limited menu, way overpriced food, measured, overpriced cocktails. Not what is portrayed in the advertising. Would not return.
Kanu's multistory great lodge is a spectacle to behold. Unfortunately, the stunning setting couldn't overcome the underwhelming menu and food (dry, tasteless halibut and mealy flourless chocolate torte are hard to pull off, but the kitchen managed.) Expect to pay a lot for the setting (it really is impressive), temper your food expectations, and you'll avoid disappointment.
The atmosphere and decor are stunning, but the service was very slow. Food was fair (at best) and way too expensive for the quality. The shrimp cocktail appetizer we got was like something you'd get at a diner. The shrimp were small to begin with, and were cut in half and drowned in cocktail sauce. My rib eye was over cooked and served in a pool of fatty juice, which totally ruined the mashed potatoes. I should have sent it back, but we waited so long to be served that I was starving. I ate a little, but left most of it on the plate. My husdand's filet was fine, but both of his sides were cold. For the prices on the menu I was expecting a memorable dining experience. We had really looked forward to our meal at Kanu, but we're so disappointed.
Very disappointed! The photos and venue are very beautiful however doesn't compensate for the poor food and service. For as pricey as the food is you do not get a decent quantity or selection. The service was just as terrible unfortunately. Didn't have any wine we chose from menu, asked for tea instead, never brought it out even after a friendly reminder. One of our guests from large party used salt shaker, they just picked it up and the entire top broke off and dumped salt into their $43 filet. Upon informing the waiter he simply said "I'm sorry about that. " Salty sirloin for dinner I guess. 👎🏽. Not impressed. Visited many other places in Lake Placid for much less $ and had much better food and service.
Wonderful dinner, sea bass was the best we have had in a long time.
