Kanpai - Milwaukee Ratings and Reviews
Recommended from my daughter who frequents this restaurant and we were not disappointed at all. Wonderful waiter and cleanly restaurant. The food was amazing. I am new to the Asian Sushi Market, and we shared seaweed salad, potstickers, Kanpai and Oh My God..... the food was wonderful! Would come again and try other items. FIVE STAR RATING! Loved every bite!
Excellent food, but awful service. We were sat down and offered menus to review. Our server came to us said he'd return after we reviewed the menus. It was 20 minutes until he returned only because we flagged him down. He actually admitted that he lost track of time talking to a regular customer. He apologized, but this just seems unacceptable and inappropriate. He also mentioned this was just his summer job. Note: probably shouldn't admit that when you've already treated your customers with such little attention. Again, the food was just fantastic, I just wish that the service would have been the same. We'll be sure to come back after this server's 'summer job' is over.
Our first visit to Kanpai - it was pretty quiet late on a Tuesday evening, but we were okay with that. Our server was helpful and attentive (although he spoke so quietly at times it almost seemed like mumbling under his breath, rather than addressing us). The drinks were good, as was the food. Of particular note were the Spicy edamame and the Miami maki. The one "low" note was the Crazy maki roll - apparently it's popular, but both of us found the sweetness to be a bit off-putting (not enough that we didn't eat it, however). Oh, and the running political commentary coming from the booth behind us (while we agreed with most of what she was saying, she was speaking a bit loudly given the generally low level of ambient noise)...
I took my son, the sushi liver, for dinner. He thoroughly enjoyed, as did I. We sat at the bar and were entertained watching the chefs work non stop.
The fish was extremely fresh and clean. The price was midline for sushi/sashimi, worth the extra few dollars for such fresh tastes.
My wife and I returned and discovered it was Downtown Dining Week, an added bonus. Already featuring good lunch specials, the opportunity to have a fixed price (very reasonable) for a 3 course meal was too good to pass on. We had 3 rolls, tekka, trio and spicy tuna and all 3 were delicious. Out waiter also was knowledgeable, personable and went the extra yard for a special request. I love this place and beyond the sushi, sashimi, and Korean offerings we agree that the miso soup and the ginger dressing and our salad were the best in town.
We went here with our group of 12 when another restaurant was booked for the night I wanted. We were all pleasantly surprised. They seated us in a semi-private area where we had plenty of room but still felt part of the restaurant. (There is also a more private room with a traditional low Japanese table. There was a bachelorette dinner in there while we dined. We may book this next time). Our waiter was wonderful- very informative, friendly and professional. We were all very happy with his recommendations for appetizers for the table. The wagyu beef jalapeño poppers were excellent. My husband and I ordered two maki rolls for dinner. Both very good. The flavored sakis were a fun addition to the meal. Everyone in our party said they would recommend this restaurant and they all plan to return.
I think we had something if everything between the four of us! Crispy veggie gyoza, well-salted edamame, hot miso soup and tasty seaweed and house salads to start. Fresh and flavorful maki rolls - I will be craving the Hot Spider at every other sushi place I visit. Great to have teriyaki tofu for vegetarians! Soba noodles with chicken was tasty and always happy when black rice is an option. Great service and great atmosphere (music at just the right volume).
Amazing sushi although pricey. It is worth it for a splurge! The freshness of the food is impeccable. Would highly recommend the stuffed avocado appetizer! The only downfall was we were right next to the dish pit and server stations which caused unneeded noise.
Very timely seating. Parking required finding a spot on a side street, or paid lot. But that's not unusual for this part of town. Very attentive waitress. Knowledgable about menu, offered excellent recommendations. Comparable prices to other restaurants. Sashimi was fresh, a little pricier than other establishments, but quality was good. Wine list was reasonably complete.
We had a party of 4, sat at a booth, were promptly served during prime time. Inclusive menu was easy to choose from, and food arrived timely.
The restaurant is fairly nice and the sushi is very good, but a bit over priced compared to other sushi restaurants in town. The waiter was nice, but it didn't seem like he was all too happy to take care of us. He also forgot our water and then our request for a silverware setting. Lastly, it took some flagging down to get our check even after explaining we making it quick for a theater show. The second waiter that brought our sushi was nicer and said hello and goodbye even though we weren't his table.
All in all, it was a good experience but given the prices, pleasantness shouldn't be hit or miss.
Kanpai offers a fantastic sushi experience and knowledgeable waitstaff who really take care of you. We were served by Paris, a young man who really knew his way around the menu and made confident suggestions for both our drink (house negori sake) and sushi dinner rolls. Paris is articulate and responsive, often anticipating our needs before we had to ask.
The sushi itself is fresh and the flavor combinations are perfectly balanced. We ordered three different rolls and ended up adding a fourth, each with a unique blend of ingredients, textures and tastes. We were comfortably full at the end of our meal. More, Kanpai prices are commensurate with the amount of food on the plate; you definitely get your money's worth.
We have walked by Kanpai many times but finally decided to give it a try. Our server Heather was outstanding, able to explain anything on the menu or from the bar in terms any could easily understand. She gave us great recommendations on what to order. You can tell she is very knowledgeable. There is something for everyone here. Can't wait to come back.
