Kana Tapas Bar Ratings and Reviews
This was a nice restaurant. It was very cold when we arrived early for dinner on a Sunday evening. We sat far in the back and it was still quite cold. The food was just okay. The escargot was delicious. And the bread they serve at the beginning of the meal was warm and also delicious.
The pulpo tapa was served in a tomato stew base which was unfamiliar to me and not very flavorful. The paella was also just ok. I liked that it was a good size for two and had fresh seafood. And was seasoned just ok.
We arrived for our reservation, only to observe that the restaurant was not yet open. We were told to come back 15 minutes later. When we came back, we were the only people in the restaurant other than a number of people from the bar next door who wanted to use the bathroom. Considering the lack of people in the restaurant, it was surprising that we had to ask three times for the check. This was quite unfortunate considering how good the food was.
Food was good, but nothing that special. The sangria was good, and they seem to have decent beer on tap. The most interesting thing about the place is that it hosts Tuesday evening dance lessons at 7pm, which actually looked like a fun thing to do with a bunch of friends. We were the only customers until about 7pm, then the place was packed. Good friendly vibe form a diverse bunch of people. I wouldn't go there for the food only, but seems like a potential hangout place for a group of friends.
The tapas here are great and reasonably priced. It has late hours (4 a.m.) so a great late night spot but we have always come on the early side before a show at City Winery. It may be quiet (you may be almost the only ones there at that hour) but the food is worth it.
We arrived in time for our reservation on a Saturday night but the restaurant wasn't quite open yet. The door was unlocked but music was off & chairs/tables were up. We called to double check and the owner was surprised that they weren't open yet. It was really strange. One of the servers let us in while they were setting up but after 15 minutes we just couldn't do it. We were not able to try the food but the overall ambiance and situation were so bad that we won't try again.
Although small, it's good for just two people or small groups of people. The small plates are good - you can order a mix of them and have enough to eat while drinking. Great happy hour and nice Latin music playing in the background. After 7/7:30, it can get a bit noisy around the bar, but are chatting, no worries of anyone else hearing you.
Went after work with two other friends and was nicely surprised. The tapas menu had a nice variety of choices and the food was good. The place is small so if you go with a group, it should be a small group. Suggest making reservations for more than 3 people. Kana has outdoor seating. The service was good but I could see that as it got later in the evening, more people came. They also played good background music that made me want to dance.
An absolutely extremely disappointing experience. Dreadful below standard food. We ordered the shrimp and we were delivered old, rubbery reheated shrimp coated in a terribly over garlicked sauce. I had to send them back. The croquettes were inedible as they were synthetic tasting. Like a hideous budget-brand frozen product. I'm unsure what the chorizo actually was but it was like nothing I've ever seen. Basically old scraps of sausage. The calamari was clearly frozen also and everything that was fried seemed to have been fried in old, reused oil. We drank the Chilean Cabernet Sauvingnon and that tasted like a $5 bottle of cooking wine from Trader Joes. Oh - and the bread they gave out was stale at the ends. And the patatas bravas were rank. So basically please stay away from this restaurant. It was EMPTY when we arrived at 915 tonight. All the restaurants adjacent to it were buzzing. We should've trusted our instincts and walk away upon entry.
An out-of-the-way, small, brick-walled café with a bar and a few outside tables, Kañas offered tapas from a diverse menu. We ordered a sangria (so-so) & a Belgian beer (good) and four tapas: chorizo, ,gambas al ajillo, jamón serrano, and croquetas. All were generously served and excellent.
We were surprised that the place was not owned by a Spaniard but by two partners, an Argentine and a Uruguayan. The wait staff is Mexican.
What a find. Excellent food with friendly service. Our waitress, Angela, made great recommendations and was very attentive. We had the grilled vegetables, shrimp, meatballs and octopus. Each wonderfully unique with different flavors. We will return next time in Soho.

It's a typical rather than avant-garde tapas menu, but all very tasty, with good options for both carnivores and vegetarians. The service can be a little flaky, however. But its great strength is that it's a great place to go with a group. Except in the summer, when the outdoor seating sometimes gets crowded, on weeknights and before 8 on weekends, it's generally not too crowded.
