This place never disappoints! More exensive than some, but the quality of servers and staff is superb, the atmosphere lovely and the food creatively assembled and always fresh.

We were very happy with our time at Kamehachi. We felt that we slightly overpaid for the sashimi menu. However the value of everything else was outstanding. The cocktails were wonderful, the sushi rolls were as good as it gets and the shrimp tempura with the sweet and spicy glaze on a frisee bed was one the best things I may have ever eaten in my life. The service was exceptional. I highly recommend it.

The sushi was exceptionally fresh and the seaweed salad and miso soup were excellent. The soba noodles that my daughter ordered were mushy and somewhat tasteless. Our waitress was very good but she had a lot of tables.

I think of Kamehachi in Old Town as good (not great), reliable and somewhat over-priced. It's a good pre-theater choice. Service is good and prompt. The food comes out pretty quickly and you'll be out the door well in time for the show. On my most recent visit, the two specials we tried were disappointing. There were just a few pieces of grilled calamari--a poor value for $12. I didn't taste much lobster in the lobster eggroll. I got a piece of smoked salmon sushi (sake) that was disappointing as well--a much smaller piece of salmon than provided in most other sushi restaurants. The vegetable and rock shrimp tempura were fine. The real star of the meal was the Mushroom Tobanyaki, which would be very much at home in an Italian restaurant--mushrooms sauteed in garlic buttter with asiago polenta. The only Japanese note was the sake wine in the sauce. But, whatever, it's delicious and a generous portion is provided.

We came for an early dinner before a show and ordered sushi and sashimi based on the waiters recommendation. The food all tasted terrible, as if it’d been sitting in a refrigerator for a week. We never send food back, but this was the least fresh sushi we’ve had in Chicago. When we asked for a menu to pick something non-sushi our waiter seemed upset with us and never asked what the issue was. Our appetizer, sake, and replacement food were good, but it wasn’t the most fun experience.

Best Japanese food we've had since a spring trip to Japan. Loved the choices of Japanese whiskey and the Manhattan made with Nikki Coffey was amazing. Rolls were delightful. Sashimi and tempura were top notch. Everyone enjoyed! I'd give it 5 stars, but decor and service and value were very very good, but not excellent. I'm a hard to please 5 star giver. We will be back!

Great sushi, excellent apps, etc. Décor could use a bit of a touch up - janky tables, ripped banquettes, dated furnishings, but good option when in Old Town.

We took the Japanese tapas approach. Every dish was a standout. Spicy edamame, goa mae, mushrooms and polenta, oysters, sushi, rolls. Lychee martinis.

This is sushi -- nigiri for us, although the sashimi looks as good, as do other dishes -- at its best in Chicago. And for a reasonable price. It's not inexpensive, so if you need quantity at a low price, consider elsewhere.

If, however, you want innovative sushi in generous slices with wonderfully fresh ingredients, Kamehachi of Tokyo is the ticket. And if you need a generous bar with it, this is also the place.

We had one of the specialty cocktails and every one of the six or seven monthly nigiri specials (except with the shitake maki instead of the special maki: our preference). It was definitely the right choice.

They take sushi seriously here, but in a relaxed and casual atmosphere that's fine for first dates, dining with friends and families. Also, it does entertainment on some evenings and sushi classes.

Kamehachi, a venerable name in Old Town Chicago -- in 1967, it was the first genuine sushi restaurant a block farther south on Wells St. -- has morphed into a convivial club/bar operation in the front, outdoor dining in season (this is Chicago, after all) and a pleasant series of rooms for dining. And it'a family place, too, very tolerant of younger gourmands.

The menu combines a standard list of nigiri and sashimi (with ingredients of high quality, well above "standard") and plenty of interesting tempura options and inventive house specialties. You can make a fine meal on a selection of excellent hot and cold appetizers. Its Shitaki maki -- mushrooms marinated in something secret -- is one of a kind. For the person in your party who does not care for sushi, the kitchen will serve a nice beef dish, chicken salad or a signature specialty roll that will win the hardest heart over to "just try one."

Speaking of the kitchen, the owner cooks here regularly, specializing in deserts and special additions to the menu.

Very good sushi, have been going there and previous locations for over forty years. This visit was a little marred by a very loud 12+ party that made conversation difficult as well as communicating with the server. Hopefully, and very likely, they won't be there when we return.

4 stars for the very fresh sashimi. Also, they have great fried oysters, and a good Nigori sake. I was only disappointed in the Chirashi, which had the rice served separately, on the side, and the preparation was not traditional (lightly vinegared rice was strewn with chopped pickles, not the nori and tobiko that I'm used to getting at other places). But the fish was excellent.
