Perfect place for a business lunch. It was quiet and pleasant with attentive but unobtrusive service. The salmon teriyaki bento box was delicious.
We go here often and the food is consistently good and very fresh. It is a smaller space so it can get a little loud with lots of people moving around. Fun to sit at the sushi bar and watch them make the fish - overall a great place!
Good food. Nice atmosphere. Should have more to offer for dessert.
Long wait but bring good company and all is well. Good neighborhood spot.
One of the best sushi places in the area! It is small, so you can feel like you are too close to others to really have a dining experience that feels at all private.
Good neighborhood standard and the brussel sprouts are to die for! Service has been spotty in the past but was great tonight.
If only management could get service right, this would be a great restaurant. They don't know to do simple things like refilling water, tea etc. Either restaurant isn't staffed appropriately or the team of servers don't work together. Meal sequencing also way off.
Creative, tasty Japanese food at a reasonable price... considering Bay Atea prices... retains a high level of execution.
Tables are way too close together. The servers can't serve easily without bumping into other patrons. They've done themselves a disservice in pushing them so close together. Not enjoyable.
This is a modified (western) place to eat. Not much for real Japanese food.
The service left much to be desired. Starting from the 35 min wait on top of our reservation (I get it, it was Valentine's Day) they comped us some sake. Then we got a very pushy server who was actually not a dedicated server but a manager "training" while he waited for their new restaurant in downtown Oakland to open. He was very pushy and then just left without clearly passing the baton to another sever. Food took forever to come out, and no one looked after us. Very disappointing. The only good thing to come from this restaurant was the excellent sushi once it finally arrived ( to give you an idea we watched the table next to use receive about 4 dishes before we received one after having waited).
The sushi was the saving grace. I would be willing to come back again during another less busy time to see if service changes.
Another fantastic lunch at Kakui. I was meeting a business colleague who came over from Danville, CA.
Their lunch time special Bento Box is so delicious and such a great value. Super fresh, always a great combination of chef's choice fish. Perfect size for lunch. Lots of food! I have always had a great experience with food, service and ambiance.
A rating for anything but the service should be ignored because we were unable to eat here, despite having a reservation for weeks. We waiting at least 15 minutes before ordering drinks and then were waiting 20 MINUTES (!!) before we had to talk to the waitress about our order. We NEVER received our drinks. We simply said we would cancel our order and we walked to a nearby restaurant. Very disappointing, as we are local to the area and were looking forward to finding a good sushi spot. Will not go back.
Service was super slow. Took almost two hours before we got our entree and out wait person seemed not all there. Just kinda dingy. Also, I had assumed this place was more of an adult spot but walked in to see a family with a toddler who had rice all over the floor. I have kids and get it... just didn't jibe with my impression of what this place was. It wont be a destination for another date night.
Lovely sushi. Very tasty and fresh. Excellent service and very reasonable.
Great Sushi! Oakland A rolls were delicious
Seriously some of the yummiest fresh sushi I have had in a while! Beautiful restaurant too. Definitely will be back for more! The Alicia Roll was my favorite.
First time eating there was last week and we liked it so much we went back. Boyfried is NOT a sushi fan so he had chicken teriyaki 1st time and shrimp tempura 2nd. I had sushi. Everything was very good except the fact that both times, his cooked food came at least 15 minutes before my sushi. THe first time the waiter comped my sake because of the wait but not the 2nd time. I thought the first time was a fluke but apparently not. That's my only complaint. The food is good and the service is pleasant but they need to get their serving times organized a bit better.
The food was pretty good, but still overpriced, particularly the Miso, considering how small the actual serving of fish was. The server may want to relax a bit, we have had her before, very awkward long silences, gazing at us, I felt like I had to drive the conversation. I am only bringing it up because she is not a new employee.
In any event, I still would recommend it to friends. It may be a little cramped for new families with babies/strollers.
Everything was wonderful! The special sushi scallops, Brussels sprouts were delicious!
Slow service, they forgot one dish and didn't bring it even after we reminded them. Tempura is mushy and oily
it was great, our server was very helpful and knowledgeable of their food, She was always checking on us since we were sitting outside,
Took the family here because my favorite Sushi restaurant is closed on Mondays.
Restaurant was cold and accoustics were dreadful. We were the only people in the place and it was bizarrely difficult to hear.
Food was good, fresh, tasty, but I probably won't go back. Contrary to several Yelp reviews, the staff were great, service was great.
If you go, definitely try the garlic edamame.
The fish is always fresh and the location is spectacular. Montclair Village is the best.
The air conditioning was not working, so it was very hot. Not a good sign when sushi should be kept very cold.
While the food is very good, the service made me lose my appetite. I have been to Kakui 2 times and both times the service was terrible. I had made a reservation with open table, only to be told that it was my fault they couldn't seat me right away because I made my reservation so late???? HUH! The hostess was in desperate need of training, and the woman who was suppose to be the manager sounded like she was reading from a teleprompter. Very robotic. They did the right thing by comping our first beverage order, but then charged us for 2 items we never received. By that time it was just too difficult to explain their mistake to them. I have to say that while the food is good, I do not plan on retuning for "The third time is a charm" dinning experience". There are other good Japanese restaurants with much better service!!!!!
This was a dining experience from hell. I had to ask THREE people for a glass of water and a glass of wine to have with my dinner. So my food just sat there while I waited 15-20 minutes. I asked the sues chef, the waitress, and finally the hostess. Horrible service!
Meanwhile, another disgruntled customer was so enraged she started screaming at the staff. It was a little much but honestly I didn't blame her. This place has been steadily going downhill in the past year. Our past couple of experiences here have been horrible. We won't go back, which is a shame because we live in Montclair and would like to support local businesses.
We agree with other reviewers, food is very good, service funky! Owner seems asleep at the wheel. Only decent staff was the busboy.
The staff is generally very good and will let you sit and enjoy your meal whether you're alone or with several others.
Great fresh fish! ALWAYS!!
There are some really creative sushi combinations at Kakui. Love it!
We've been here many times and it doesn't disappoint. The ambiance is warm, relatively quiet, dark and cozy. The servers are knowledgeable and very helpful in terms of explanations and suggestions. The food is always top-notch. We vacillate between sushi rolls (love the French kiss and the crunchy tuna, the tuna tower and others) and the entrees. The ribs are delicious. Good sake and lots of choices in terms of flavor, dryness, and price. We have always been delighted with our meals.
We've eaten here many times and we have never been disappointed. We were there with friends and shared many dishes, all of which were expertly made, beautifully presented, delicious, and quite moderately priced. The service is always good, recommendations are usually spot-on and well-received. We can always count on eating well at Kakui. Reservations are always a good idea as it is small and popular. While Montclair has a few good places to eat, Kakui is far and above the rest and there is almost always a full house.
There are at least three sushi restaurants in Montclair, all with good reviews but we decided to try Kakui for the first time. What a wonderful surprise. The food was superb with several surprising combinations and flavors. As we had read, the brussel sprouts were a fantastic way to start and everything that followed including rock cod, three rolls and other sides satisfied us. Our son is quite demanding when it comes to sushi and he loved it all.
Service was friendly and helpful with dishes spread out and not coming to the table at the same time, a trend we appreciate.
We will return.
Fish was fresh. Beet salad was very good. Sashimi with scallops was good. Pork belly was okay. Short ribs were actually spare ribs; pork not beef. Black cod was good. Rice was not offered with any of the entrees but thankfully it came out quickly once ordered.
Service was friendly but fairly inattentive and not particularly competent.
Coconut sorbet was a prepared product that seemed like it had melted and been refrozen. It was not creamy at all and was practically all ice at the bottom. Highly overpriced at $9!
I've been to Kakui many times, and usually the service has been good. However, the last time I went, there was a new server who forgot one of the items we ordered, yet charged us for it. Not only that, but it was hard to find her when we wanted our check so we had to ask someone else for it. I also ran into someone I work with who had come from Lafayette to try Kakui. His comment afterwards was that the food was great, but the service was not. So...to the manager: I think you need to step up your training and hiring if you want to keep up the good reviews!
I would not be going back. This was my first visit on a Saturday evening and the service was horrible. Our server took forever to take our order, then the entree arrived before the appetizer. We canceled the appetizer, but it was delivered anyhow and we were charged for it. The food was excellent as always, but we will NEVER go back on a Saturday again.
The sushi is amazing especially the Lion King. All of the sushi is great I always try something new . The Brussel sprouts were perfect as was the Goyza.
Nice local market Montclair sushi. They need to up their game a bit though. Especially for the price, but we continue to go as it's the best local place.
Sushi very fresh. Seasonal menu incl the beet salad was fantastic. Lots of fun with sushi team makes it fun to sit at the sushi bar! Been coming for several years...always great quality. Service dips now and then, but they seem well staffed presently.
