what a find in Montclair! although our GPS took us about a block away and you would really miss this place if you weren't looking hard for it. we walked past it twice! But once we got there -- wonderful! the food is amazing. service was excellent. I will definitely go here again!
One of the most lovely (Japanese) restaurant in the Bay Area. They don't have a whole lot of diverse items on the menu, unlike some of the typical sushi places, but what's on the menu are generally very delicious. Tempura, nigiri, rolls, grilled dishes, you name it. What I like most about their food is that the chefs don't overdo it; it is rarely too sweet, too salty, too spicy or too fancy. I enjoy going there on Sunday evenings; parking is relatively easier, and the place is not as crowded.
First... always cross check the reviews here on other sites :)
That being said, the only thing I have to add is how they cheap out on a dish like a Spicy Tuna Roll by stuffing it with cucumber vs. actual fish. We sent that dish back and then received what we initially ordered.
Everything was OK-to -ood. They definitely tried harder when they first opened, though; this time service seemed a little indifferent and sushi not quite as shimmeringly fresh as it used to be. Not very busy at lunchtime. Perhaps they need to step up their game just a bit.
The service left a lot to be desired and the sushi was average
Decided to try a new sushi bar during an impromptu staycation day. My visit to this restaurant was by far the low point of an otherwise excellent day! The wait staff was confused. The person who seated me sent back my appetizer order; it arrived with the dinner order some 20 minutes later. The person who appears to be the head waiter, chose to wait on customers who were obviously seated after me. When he decided to wait on my table, we were sent the wrong food at least four times! When my dinner date received the ribs, they were so tough that they had to be sent back! Needless to say, the check was wrong too! I will not be returning to this restaurant...
If only management could get service right, this would be a great restaurant. They don't know to do simple things like refilling water, tea etc. Either restaurant isn't staffed appropriately or the team of servers don't work together. Meal sequencing also way off.
The service left much to be desired. Starting from the 35 min wait on top of our reservation (I get it, it was Valentine's Day) they comped us some sake. Then we got a very pushy server who was actually not a dedicated server but a manager "training" while he waited for their new restaurant in downtown Oakland to open. He was very pushy and then just left without clearly passing the baton to another sever. Food took forever to come out, and no one looked after us. Very disappointing. The only good thing to come from this restaurant was the excellent sushi once it finally arrived ( to give you an idea we watched the table next to use receive about 4 dishes before we received one after having waited).
The sushi was the saving grace. I would be willing to come back again during another less busy time to see if service changes.
A rating for anything but the service should be ignored because we were unable to eat here, despite having a reservation for weeks. We waiting at least 15 minutes before ordering drinks and then were waiting 20 MINUTES (!!) before we had to talk to the waitress about our order. We NEVER received our drinks. We simply said we would cancel our order and we walked to a nearby restaurant. Very disappointing, as we are local to the area and were looking forward to finding a good sushi spot. Will not go back.
Service was super slow. Took almost two hours before we got our entree and out wait person seemed not all there. Just kinda dingy. Also, I had assumed this place was more of an adult spot but walked in to see a family with a toddler who had rice all over the floor. I have kids and get it... just didn't jibe with my impression of what this place was. It wont be a destination for another date night.
First time eating there was last week and we liked it so much we went back. Boyfried is NOT a sushi fan so he had chicken teriyaki 1st time and shrimp tempura 2nd. I had sushi. Everything was very good except the fact that both times, his cooked food came at least 15 minutes before my sushi. THe first time the waiter comped my sake because of the wait but not the 2nd time. I thought the first time was a fluke but apparently not. That's my only complaint. The food is good and the service is pleasant but they need to get their serving times organized a bit better.
The food was pretty good, but still overpriced, particularly the Miso, considering how small the actual serving of fish was. The server may want to relax a bit, we have had her before, very awkward long silences, gazing at us, I felt like I had to drive the conversation. I am only bringing it up because she is not a new employee.
In any event, I still would recommend it to friends. It may be a little cramped for new families with babies/strollers.
