Excellent food, good service! What more could you ask??
We appreciated the Japanese cuisine that extended way beyond sushi (which is also excellent here). They had amazing entrees and salads, all using authentic Japanese ingredients and delicious. Service was great too.
Great service and food. We love that it’s right here in our neighborhood.
Great food, excellent service
Delicious food in lovely setting with great service!
i made the initial reservation on open table for 2 people and i tried to call and change the reservation for 4 people. when they answered and transferred me to the manager he put me on hold for over 7 min. until i hung up and called back 4 more times over a couple of hours and they never answered. When we arrived 15min early they told us we would have to wait at least 20 min. past our 7pm time even though they had at least 4 open tables for 4people that were only filled as we were finished and had paid the bill. The food and service were good once we got in and seated.
Six of us had a lovely evening at Kakui this Thursday. It was not crowded so the noise level was low and the service was excellent. Fast, friendly and helpful. We had big beers instead of Sake and that was just fine. Had the agedashi dofu deep-fried bonito crusted tofu (great taste) and brussel sprouts karashi vinagrette for starters (if you close your eyes could could barely sense these were brussels sprouts). For mains we had buta abara pork ribs, aka miso sauce, avocado kappa salada (one of us does not do raw fish!), and sushi hamachi yellow tail, sake salmon (simply melt in your mouth), lion king california roll, topped with salmon, french sauce, jp roll shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, white tuna, avocado wrapped with soy bean paper (delightful) and finally the dragon roll shrimp tempura, cucumber. Simply a great meal, will come more often.
Late evening dinner coming from the airport.
Amazing offerings of seasonal items- watermelon salad. Food was fresh and well presented.
Will be back now we know of this gem in Montclair!
Food so on point! Service is nice and friendly too. One of our favorite restaurants now for a long time in Oakland.
Great food most of the time. Disjointed service from very friendly wait staff. Relatively inexpensive. Limited beer selections.
Late arrival but still warm welcoming very thankful service
Great little sushi spot with outstanding food and menu options! Everything we tried (soup/gyoza/sashimi/nigiri/rolls) were delicious!
We have been to Kakui numerous times and it is reliably good and quiet enough to have a good conversation with friends. We're so glad they're in the neighborhood. Montclair could use more restaurants of this quality.
Portions seem smaller and quality not as good as in many previous visits
I like eating here as the fish is always fresh and very appealing and you can tell by the delicious taste—a lot of places may sell sushi and sashimi but you can tell this restaurant prides itself on the quality of their products. Two of us ordered chirashi and one person had one of the sushi rolls and the presentation and taste were very good. They also serve dishes like chicken teriyaki and tempura so there is something for everyone to enjoy at this restaurant. It is a tranquil place and a good choice for those who want to sit and chat.
The "Closed" sign was still hanging out front when we arrived at 6 p.m. (Restaurant opens at 5:00 p.m.). Our table wasn't ready when we arrived. We waited while they wiped it down and set it. The edamame were soggy and extremely over-salted. The inari sushi was dry and not sweet enough, and it wasn't served until the very end of the meal when the other diners in my party had finished eating. The sashimi was twice the price of other local Japanese restaurants. We asked for 2 sake cups when we ordered a carafe of sake, but received only 1 cup, so had to ask again for the second cup. The food was way overpriced. I've enjoyed much better Japanese food for half the price elsewhere. I indicated when I made my Open Table reservation that this was a Birthday celebration dinner, but the restaurant didn't even mention or ask about that and did nothing special to acknowledge the occasion. We WON'T be back.
We go here all the time. Good food, reasonable prices and good service.
Kakui hits the spot every time. Quality + service are OUTSTANDING. Best quality sushi we've found in the East Bay.
Really really really really slow service
third time I have been here and each time the service is very poor. Brought 6 people this time. Have to wait long time to get food and comes sporadically . Sometimes have to ask for them to remember. Five people working and tables only half full, yet poor service. Have to ask to get water refilled. Have to find someone just to ask to get tea refilled and then often not hot. Food was good when arrived. Must be another Sushi place in Montclair that is more responsive.
Absolutely amazing. Service is great and so is the food. I recommend trying the lamb.
Mother daughter date night
We've been here before and the food is usually good and somewhat inventive. But our meal was disappointing. Several dishes were sub-par. And the wine is really overpriced. Our server was good.
Sushi was solid as well as the overall decor of the place..Nice little neighborhood sushi joint that does everything well. Not gonna blow your socks off but neither will the bill at the end of the meal.
I used to enjoy this place more but the service has gone downhill.
The food and drink were the lowest quality I have experienced in any sushi restaurant -- ever.
And, the prices are steep in comparison with high quality sushi restaurants in the Bay Area.
The sake was extremely cheap in quality and I am sure cost. The sashimi was the lowest quality fish I have ever been served.
Do not waste your money or your time.
I would NOT recommend this place to anyone.
Good place to go for any day dining. There was nothing negative about the food or service - overall a good local place. The bar was full, and all tables too on a Saturday night. The service was excellent and food was more of a Japanese California style. Food was priced well for the value and quality. No complaints here but I also would not rave for days about it. It is a small restaurant (which I really like) so I’d probably reserve if for a Saturday night. The noise level was not terribly loud so I’m thinking it would be suitable for a timid date.
we booked a table through open table. when we arrived, we were told that they were closed. i had no issues with not being served, but was treated very rudely when i tried to tell the hostess/server that their hours were incorrect and that they might want to correct them for the customers. i will likely not visit them during business hours as a result. also, their accessible button to open the front door was broken, which sucked as i am disabled.
I absolutely love the warm mushroom salad and keep returning for it. I also enjoy the miso soup and potstickers!! Yum, Yum!
I have introduced several friends to this place and all have loved it.
This is a lovely little spot in Montclaire, Oakland, my first visit. The food is delicious and the service very friendly. I walked by one of the waiters taking a break and eating at the bar. She had a delicious looking sushi roll, salmon with a touch of lemon on top, that I commented on, and she offered me a piece!
The usual miso soup and mixed tempura is very good and the entré, black cod with bok choy and crimini mushrooms (Gindara) was superb. They also have shishito peppers as an appetizer, one of my favorites.
The decor is super nice; the prices are reasonable. Will go back lots.
Always awesome and I am extremely selective! The food is divine. The service is on point.
Visiting the area for the first time and we were really impressed!
Best sushi in Montclair by far. Superb ingredients and recipes. Fantastic, friendly, fun staff. Excellent service.
We wanted to love it as they are in our neighborhood, and overall it was a good experience, but I felt like there was an element of missed opportunity here. Regarding the food, it was primarily deep fried focus, with varying sauces more sweet than savory - not unpleasant but not visionary either. Plating was well crafted. The service was absent/spotty in generally mixed - eg not clearing the plates at all, leading us to move them to adjoining table, and having to wipe down the table ourselves - and ask for the clothes and materials to do that - water not refilled - nothing proactive in general. Charged card for a different table first, though they redacted it - wait staff seemed to spend more time talking to themselves, looking at their phones rather than working the room so to speak - though they were aware of the need to check and ask if we liked the food - so mixed... We hope they take the criticism constructively - innovate more in the kitchen, add more healthy options and do some more SOP work on the service. Montclair needs this place given the limited options. We plan to go back either way.
I was disappointed that a Japanese restaurant that seems on the higher end would serve imitation crab premixed with its regular crab. Menu had a few options for a gluten free diner but not a ton. As someone who needs GF I will go elsewhere next time. It was also so loud I couldn’t hear my family across the table very easily. The wait staff were super nice, however, and the food was prepared very well.
Very good but not great sushi, etc. Nice place with good service.
Only negative is that prices are high and portions are small.
Prices are like downtown SF or Beverly Hills, $$ for a neighborhood place.
Great neighborhood Japanese restaurant with some unusual offerings and nice atmosphere.
Have been there several times. Food is consistently excellent - love all those different 'sushi' rolls! - and service is friendly & attentive. A great addition to Montclair.
A group of 7 co--workers decided to end the week with a pleasant meal. We enjoyed the diverse menu with lots of vegi options. We opened the restaurant (5:30) and were seated against the wall near the door, on two small tables. Unfortunately, it was a cool nght, and we had to keep asking the reception person to close it. When the food came, it was placed on the table haphazardly by a variety of folks (not our waitress, who was busy taking other orders) and they neglected to bring condiments. The table was crowded for our group, and at one point a glass of water got knocked over due to this. The place is small-without professional wait staff. Finally, after just an hour, with patrons standind around waiting for us to leave., we left. While the food was good, it was not a pleasant or relaxing meal. I would not go back with a large group - they simply could not handle it.
