About Kafe 421
"If you are looking for a casual place to eat . . . one that serves fresh, home-cooked food with a modern sensibility, add Kafe 421 to your list. Noticeably more subdued and less expensive than most other restaurants with food standards this high, 421 has something for everyone. [Owner Georgia Sander] keeps the "world pantry" combination of ingredients flowing along smoothly, focusing on Latin or Mediterranean flavors. For those on a budget, the sandwich list is creative and extensive . . . Keeping everyone happy seems to be Kafe 421's forte." Mpls.St.Paul Magazine

Kafe 421 Ratings and Reviews
Our first time. We made a reservation but still had to wait 10-15 minutes for a table. Not a problem but, if you were on a tight schedule, it could be an issue. Food was good. Had stuffed grape leaves as an appetizer and one of the best we have had. Would have liked to see more Greek options. Overall, a good experience. Waitpeople were very helpful and friendly. We would return.
Post Valentine dinner. Food was good, had a sampler appetizer. The funniest item was the chicken “satay”. This is a Mediterranean restaurant and the taste from the grill was delightful- but not anything like Thai satay ;-). The feta and artichoke spread, tztziki and Greek meatballs were delightful. I had the vegetarian moussaka, and my date had the rack of lamb. Both very good (and flavorful) with a nice presentation.
It's a dark restaurant. Everyone is pleasant but there was only one server the entire night. She did well but management should have had more staff.
Food was ok - not great
Wine list was mediocre
I won't go again although it's probably fine for college kids
We arrive and were seated right on time. Our waitress had many tasks but did an excellent job! Our dinners were very good. I enjoyed the Scallops. On Tuesday evenings they offer a salad, pasta dish, and dessert special. It looked wonderful. I will be back again very soon. A wonderful place to eat prior to Gopher Athletic events.
I've written of Kafe 421 before, and can't say enough good things about it. I don't normally frequent restaurants more than once or twice a year, but the exception is Kafe 421. It's our "go to" place for a nice meal with great service and food. So many restaurants in the Twin Cities are pretentious and slightly snobby - not Kafe 421!
It is a special place that deserves your patronage. We keep coming back again and again and it is always excellent.
No vegan options but there were a couple things that could have been customized to veganize. I had salad which had butternut squash and other yummy fall veggies in it. The dressing was very heavy and greasy but I was too busy talking to eat much. It did take quite awhile to get a server to take our order, and then to get the bill. My friend had the bouillabaisse and was enjoying it until she bit into a bad mussel. A very, very bad mussel that made her quite ill and basically ruined the night. She did mention it to our server who played it off almost like it was somehow my friend's fault and then said "well other than that, how was the meal?" Oh you mean other than getting violently ill? I felt the bouillabaisse should have been taken off our bill but it wasn't - nothing was comped and there was no apology, though my friend was too passive to press the issue.
We really enjoyed our meal here. There was a nice variety of items on the menu but not too many as to be overwhelming. The service was perfect. The wait staff was attentive and kept my water glass full. The food came out in a timely manor and was hot and tasty. We will definitely be going back. As a side note, the fresh cut fries were perfect. They reminded me of the excellent fries sold at the state fair.
This was the fourth time that we ate at Kafe 421. We keep coming back because every entree is tasty, service is good, and the value is high. If you are going to a gopher sporting event, let them know and they will get you out in time. Every daily special has been excellent. Service is friendly and efficient.
After reading a ton of reviews, we decided to try Kafe 421 as a place to celebrate our son's birthday. He lives at the University and we wanted to be able to walk to the restaurant we would be eating at. We were very happy with our decision. They were able to provide us a quiet, private table in the back of the restaurant which was wonderful. The service was very attentive. The food was wonderful. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. They topped it off with a wonderful birthday treat for my son. It could not have been a better experience and we hope to be back. Bravo Kafe 421
I would recommend sitting inside. Their outside tables are close to each other and you can enjoy your meal with the homeless on the sidewalk. Other than that, the food was good, the Tuesday date special is a great value and the staff are friendly and prompt.
