We always love going here, and it worked its wonders once again. The only surprise was how quiet the place was -- people at only a couple of other tables -- but I suppose a Monday in March is not prime time. Since it was quieter than usual, conversation was easy. And the level of service and food was as high as ever. Love it.
Delicious and authentic as always, Hvala lepo Kafana!
We were looking for a good place for Eastern European cuisine and we found it! We went before a performance, so stuck to the appetizers, but the main menu looked great. We had four items from the appetizers and all were fantastic. The spinach pie (Zeljanica) was amazing and could have been a main course given how generous the serving was. The "Girice sa urnebes sosom" was as generous a bowl of delectable fish as one could want. We will definitely be going back to try the main menu and to hit the terrific looking dessert menu. It is cash only, so plan ahead. We knew, so it wasn't an issue for us.
Amazing night out with great food and amazing service. Will definitely be going back
Always a great experience here, very cozy and quaint and has a laid back vibe. The food is delicious.
Service was very slow. It took over an hour and a half to get our main courses after we sat down for our reservation. Food was ok but I wouldn't go back.
Great cozy atmosphere, seems like this is the only Serbian restaurant in NYC. Friday nights are especially fun , there was live music and people were dancing and signing which was awesome !
Kafana is crowded and busy with excellent Balkan fare, an interesting wine list, and reasonable prices. We really enjoyed it.
A bistro with quirky Serbian paraphernalia. The atmosphere is warm, lively and relaxed. and the food is authentic and delicious. Recommended for meat lovers.
The food was awful! The music so loud you couldn’t talk. The service was extremely slow l. Awful experience.
Had an outstanding early birthday celebration at Kafana last night. My friends, most of whom had never tried Balkan food before, loved the food. It was Orthodox Christmas Eve so there were many delicious seafood specials—the grilled branzino was fantastic. The wine list is always impeccable. Hvala!
Great food! Great service! Awesome authentic Serbian.
Kafana is THE only authentic full service Serbian restaurant in NYC. The food, staff, atmosphere, drinks are all fully authentic Serbian. I was born in Belgrade and most of my family still lives in Serbia, so the recommendation is about as real as it gets. It takes me back home, every time I visit Kafana. Always well worth it.
My wife is Serbian and we went for her birthday. She loved it and found that the cuisine is exactly like it is in the homeland. We brought our kids and they loved it too. Great find. We will be back for more!
The Kafana food is so authentic. The meals have taste of my childhood. Well made food with good quality ingredients.
Not to be missed. If I lived in NYC I would be there several times a week. Food (Serbian) is wonderful. The wine list exceptional and fairly priced. The service impeccable and more importantly: helpful and friendly. Go and make up your own mind.
Great balkan food, friendly staff. Good Croatian wine selection.
Amazing place was like at home
Very nice service. Sunday with Billie Halliday on the sound system and the best Serbian food this side of Novi Sad
I love the food at Kafana. Ever since a trip to Serbia, I take any chance I get to have authentic Serbian food. This time I brought two friends visiting from Boston. They had a wonderful time and raved about the food, the atmosphere and the service.
Everything was fine food was delicious atmosphere was like home
Excellent food, service, location. Authentic Serbian food with a great wine list.
I love dining in Kafana's friendly atmosphere.
Very nice interior, great service.
I like most of the Serbian ethnic dishes. Fish is always good. Desert menu is quite good.
Great selection of wines from the South East of Europe.
Serbian cusine is not the greatest, despite many things has changed during the last 5 years and things has really changed in Belgrade with new places like Homa and Torro. What Serbian cusine has been famours for is great portions, meat and a lot of it and a great hospitality. Kafana serves nice food, but totally overpriced and without any hospitality.
The winelist is great, but the food does not invite to using the wine list so greatly which is sad as the wine schene in Serbia has improved so much over the last 10 years and is really a must try.
Superb restaurant. We love the people who work there plus the food is simply amazing. Very friendly place! Highly recommending as we always must have a meal at Kafana when in NYC.
Ana and Dino
Delicious and authentic Serbian food. Great atmosphere and lovely people. If you want to eat well and spend some fun time with your friends, this is a place to go.
Insupportablement bruyant !
C.B pas acceptée et ça c est encore plus insupportable !
I'm giving 3 stars only for the service. I had a 8:30pm reservation and the first thing I was told was I had to be done by 10pm because they had a party. Everything was in a rush, and I was still enjoying my dessert that the waiters came with the check without I had asked for.
Anyway..the food was delicious especially for the meat combo: juicy, tender and tasty. The dessert was amazing too while the wine not my favorite, but it's a matter of taste. Ambience was cozy and authentic, not big at all but as the regular standard for an East Village restaurant.
Everything was fine except the staff. Not friendly at all resp. not paying attention to their costumers. Serbian people are actually very open and friendly - but not those who have been working on the day we have visited. We were disappointed and expected more concering the staff.
The Serbian dried meat plate was spectacular - unique vs other cuisines. Home made sausage entree was a home run! Generous portions make it a great value.
My friend and I were together in Serbia a number of years ago. We wanted to eat the same food that we loved while we were there. Kafana fits the bill. I like to take friends there for something out of the ordinary.
We all enjoyed our appetizers and dinners. Portions were generous. Desserts need work.
I would like to live here. I love the food, I love the people, we'll be back soon.
Piece of Balkans in New York! I enjoyed vey fancy version of cevapi and burek and they even had great wine from Mackov Podrum from Vojvodina. It was a great night out in East Village and a journey back in time, hipster style. Would love to come back again!
If you're looking for a delicious, leisurely meal where the staff is helpful (without hovering), Kafana is where to go. They never fail to deliver an awesome spread, and the prix fixe menu has to be one of the best values in the city.
Kafana is amazing!! It's great for authentic Serbian cuisine, great atmosphere, friendly wait staff, great vibe, delicious for people who loved Serbian food or are just trying it for fun. Delicious! Ljubim te Kafana!!
An eclectic crowd of foodie hipsters and equally tattooed Eastern Europeans, the atmosphere at Kafana is unique in New Yrok City. Slavic languages can be heard spoken throughout the restaurant by staff and patrons. The restaurant had a lengthy wine list of mostly Serbian and Croatian wines. We ordered a Teran. Courses of bread, smoked meats, pickled vegetables, smoked fish, and a mixed grill platter did not disappoint. The whole smoked trout and and bacon-wrapped dates were highlights. Highly recommend for an interesting dining experience.
One of our favorites in the city!!! Wonderful friendly staff, and can't go wrong with anything on the menu!
Went to Kafana last Saturday night and had a fabulous experience. The food was delicious and very authentic. (I am Croatian, so I'm very familiar with the food of the region.) The atmosphere is charming. The service was warm. I will be going back!
Food and ambiance was good but service was terrible, rood and unprofessional. We didn't feel welcome in any poent even though we spend 100$ for hour. We've been to several other Balkan restaurants and everywhere hospitality is on very high level but here was totally opposite experience. We would never recommend this place just because very bad service.
