Kafana Ratings and Reviews
Had an outstanding early birthday celebration at Kafana last night. My friends, most of whom had never tried Balkan food before, loved the food. It was Orthodox Christmas Eve so there were many delicious seafood specials—the grilled branzino was fantastic. The wine list is always impeccable. Hvala!
Kafana is THE only authentic full service Serbian restaurant in NYC. The food, staff, atmosphere, drinks are all fully authentic Serbian. I was born in Belgrade and most of my family still lives in Serbia, so the recommendation is about as real as it gets. It takes me back home, every time I visit Kafana. Always well worth it.
Serbian cusine is not the greatest, despite many things has changed during the last 5 years and things has really changed in Belgrade with new places like Homa and Torro. What Serbian cusine has been famours for is great portions, meat and a lot of it and a great hospitality. Kafana serves nice food, but totally overpriced and without any hospitality.
The winelist is great, but the food does not invite to using the wine list so greatly which is sad as the wine schene in Serbia has improved so much over the last 10 years and is really a must try.
I'm giving 3 stars only for the service. I had a 8:30pm reservation and the first thing I was told was I had to be done by 10pm because they had a party. Everything was in a rush, and I was still enjoying my dessert that the waiters came with the check without I had asked for.
Anyway..the food was delicious especially for the meat combo: juicy, tender and tasty. The dessert was amazing too while the wine not my favorite, but it's a matter of taste. Ambience was cozy and authentic, not big at all but as the regular standard for an East Village restaurant.
Everything was fine except the staff. Not friendly at all resp. not paying attention to their costumers. Serbian people are actually very open and friendly - but not those who have been working on the day we have visited. We were disappointed and expected more concering the staff.
An eclectic crowd of foodie hipsters and equally tattooed Eastern Europeans, the atmosphere at Kafana is unique in New Yrok City. Slavic languages can be heard spoken throughout the restaurant by staff and patrons. The restaurant had a lengthy wine list of mostly Serbian and Croatian wines. We ordered a Teran. Courses of bread, smoked meats, pickled vegetables, smoked fish, and a mixed grill platter did not disappoint. The whole smoked trout and and bacon-wrapped dates were highlights. Highly recommend for an interesting dining experience.
Food and ambiance was good but service was terrible, rood and unprofessional. We didn't feel welcome in any poent even though we spend 100$ for hour. We've been to several other Balkan restaurants and everywhere hospitality is on very high level but here was totally opposite experience. We would never recommend this place just because very bad service.
We arrived late as a result of getting stuck in traffic due to an accident. We called ahead to alert the restaurant. When we arrived, we advised we were u see a time crunch to get to a performance nearby. The hostess and staff bent over backwards to accommodate us and ensure we were served promptly and able to leave timely. Very nice people. Good good. Nice atmosphere. Try it out.
I come here as often as possible, for special occasions. If you are from the former Yugoslavia, this place is like home. Typical food, wine and wait staff. Management is friendly, and really cares about whether you are enjoying yourself and the food. Rustic, lots of meats, and 100% European. This is not about politically correct dining or trendy, food fads. It's homestyle Eastern European comfort food with no apologies and it's the best! Love them.
Great food. Friendly Service. Very small place so only one bathroom. It's cute, quaint and has outdoor seating of about 4 tables. Like i said it's a small neighborhood place. Only downside is it is a cash only place. it's an all Serbian menu which is great and the decor is serbian inspired. I just wish they would have played serbian music. If they did, I couldn't hear it outside. I would highly recommend this restaurant to EVERYONE and will definitely make it a regular place on my trips to NYC.
Kafana brought me right back to my Serbian grandmother's kitchen: it smelled wonderful as soon as we walked in. Our server was very welcoming and thankfully didn't assume I remembered all the dishes! It's a small restaurant and very busy so reservations are a good idea. Definitely try the Rolovana but be sure to ask for the smaller portion so you can enjoy the delicious desserts, particularly the sour cherry pie.
