The food, though homey and stick to your ribs, was simply not very flavorful. And therefore overpriced.
Great service! And excellent food! My colleagues love it!
Great food. Surprisingly affordable. Nice atmosphere. Will definitely return.
Come back soon, thank you great service
Great meal out. Decor was very Belgrade.
The food came out after an hour and a half
The waitress was rude
I've always liked Kafana but when I went on Sunday with nephew and his bride to be it was even more special than usual. It was relaxed with excellent food and most excellent service. A great place to make NY proud of its special place in a multinational, multicultural world.
Kafana is one of my favorite restaurants in NY. The music is laid back if a little loud.
charming place, interesting food, don't get the mackerel (small, not fresh, very over-priced), do get the pork chop.
The food was immediately impeccable as,usual, and my father, who was born in
Serbia is as delighted. I’m
Russian Salad, cheese bread ans cheese pie along with the sausage dinners are out of this world!
To expensive! Portions where very very small and prices where not aceptable!
There is nothing like real authentic food from certain region. Kafana is that place that offers food you can taste only if travel to Serbia and near region. From a friendly staff to fabulous food and incredible country's wine and beer selection.
As always, Kafana not only provides amazing service, but even more so, the food is amazing and I cannot wait until my next visit!
Fantastic and unique food! A hidden gem to which I will definitely return!
My second time coming here. Interior is not fancy at all and a bit rustic. Came with a three friends. Seating can be a problem if you arrive on a busy night with a group since it isn't a large restaurant and seating can get tight. This is also a cash only establishment. Not even debit card. So beware of that. BUT, where this place really shines is the food and the service, which makes up for the cash only thing and is authentic Serbian and Croatian cuisine. Each time I have come here I get the grilled cevapi, which in my opinion is excellent! The braised lamb is also a treat. Music plays overheard but not too loudly. All and all I will return but I will remind myself to stop off at the bank to withdraw cash before arrive.
Great wine recommendations by Nevena. Excellent ‘dunja’ - must try!
Consistently one of the very best restaurants in Alphabet City and is THE BEST restaurant on Avenue C. So glad they take reservations.
The food was excellent and the prices were good. However the noise level made the experience unbearable. It is a small room with low ceilings and the table are packed in. The waitstaff had to lean over the diners to get past tables. The music was so loud and tables so close that everyone shouted to be heard. I was there with 2 friends. One asked for her food to go as she just couldn't hear a word. She left as soon as her food came. Once the other friend and I got our food, which took quite a while to come, we scarfed it down to get out as quickly as possible. My companion did not finish his, or his wine as he could not take the noise or the people standing around him waiting to be seated. I will not go back nor recommend this for dinner although I might walk by and see if it's a different ambiance for lunch.
Great Yugoslav place, our waitress was no nonsense and generous, food was delightful, busser was a little harried, music was way too loud, and when we left which was on the later side there was a dog in the dining room which works for some but Infoned pretty gross.
Amazing food, fantastic service—when you get bored of everyday American cuisine, stop in kafana.
Great place, food and people! Love Sarme ❤️
Awesome, fun and authentic. Great food, super cool staff. Felt like Belgrade.
Great Food, very big portions. A little bit disappointed that even though I reserved a table for 8pm (we arrived at 8) we had to wait 20 min to get the table. Very loud in the beginning but got calmer after.
Would definitely recommend the place. Friendly service and fair prices.
Cosy spot with retro wooden decor and rock 'n roll era tracks playing. Simple but tasty grilled meat and fresh salads. Ample wine list from the region and very decent red house wine Vranec. Service was efficient and impersonal. Avoid booking a table for before 8pm if you don't want to be kicked out at 8pm promptly. Cash only!
Service is terrible and worst place I ever been too
One of my favorite restaurants in the city - never disappoints. Mashed potatoes better than my grandma's.
We enjoy Serbian food. It’s a treat!
Great Food coming back for sure
Great food and atmosphere. Large selection of Balkan drinks.
Food portion is quite small here. We ordered the lamb stew and lamb shank. Value for the price is not that great.
We were driving 45 minutes just to try out this Balkan-Mediterranean restaurant and it was total disappointment...First tables are so small and close to each other that is feels like you have dinner together with strangers.Food was ok but not worth for the money..Pleakavica was so thiny and small nothing special for 15.95$ . Also it’s a restaurant that serves barbecue but they don’t have hot papers or crashed red peper ...Service was the worst ever!!! Our server came to our table took the order and never came back to check on us. Instead she was seating on the bar with her phone and after 30 minutes she left, without saying anything to us...So rude and unprofessional!!! We we waiting for drinks 15 minutes before the other server notice that our glasses are empty..But they bring our apetizer and main course at the same time, rushing us to leave the restaurant as soon as possible! Also it’s CASH only and no one is telling you that until is time to pay...I definitely do not recommend this restaurant there are so much better Restaurants in Astoria NY where you can enjoy the food and the service sutable for NYC!
Came here with three others for dinner after a Broadway show-it was a trek but worth it to not stay in Times Square. I'd been meaning to try it for a while because I had my wedding desserts catered by Kafana but had not eaten at the restaurant. The food is incredible! To me it's comfort food as these are the dishes my mom and grandmother used to make. In my opinion, the kobasice is a must! Also try the gibanica and cevapi...and don't forget dessert. I was also pleasantly surprised by the bottle of Serbian red wine we shared. I don't think I've tried Serbian wine before but this was really good-they have a large selection and I wish I remembered what we ordered.
The space is cute but every inch is packed in tight. We had a very small table and the temperature was too warm for my taste.
The Serbian beer is good although could have been chilled more. The bread is very tasty, nice crust, and the pepper spread was good that goes with it. The celery root/beet salad was just ok - I didn't expect them both to be entirely uncooked though so I felt a little like a rabbit eating it. On the other hand, my spouse had the lamb shank and THAT was delicious, together with the mashed potatoes. Very very good. My conclusion was that, since it's very near, I will order that dish again as a TAKE OUT and enjoy it in the comfort of my home next time.
I love Kafana; the food is superb and some of the best grilled meat you’ll get in the city. It’s a very European style of service which means slow and relaxed and some things may slip through the cracks if you aren’t careful but for me that is part of the authentically Balkan experience. The meal starts with fresh bread and a roasted pepper spread the is to die for. We then got pickled cabbage that tasted like an excellent sourkrout, a beat and celery root salad, fried spearing fish. For the main course we got the mixed grill (amazing value for money highly recommend and the best way to sample a large portion of the menu), lamb and spinach stew, blood sausage over Maher potato (this is one of the best mashed potato dishes I’ve ever had), and a side of grilled vegetables. We finished it off with the malnutrition sponge and chocolate ganache as well as the crepes filled with chocolate and puréed nuts that were delicious.
Kafana is one of my favorite restraints in the city, I highly recommend it for delicious food and a slow laid back dinning experience.
Always one of the best meals around! Every dish was finished down to the last morsel. I do not miss coming here every time I am in town! Hvala puno!
I visit Kafana every time I visit NYC. It's almost like being in Belgrade. Try the stuffed plums and ALWAYS say yes to Ćevapi.
Delicious food in a cozy, charming environment. Fantastic, friendly service with prices that can't be beat.
Super disappointed. Booked the restaurant for my birthday. Would not recommend to anyone. The food was not good - the beef had a smell to it so we left most of food on the plate. Waitress was arrogant and rude. The place was a dark, little dungeon, expensive prices for poor quality food. Never again.
I have been here a few times and the food is always excellent and very authentic. What I wanted to share was my disappointment in the service. I showed up 5 minutes before my 7:30pm reservation and the staff looked so confused when we checked in. I dont think they were prepared/forgot about my resrvation. They started moving people around and ended up placing us (4 people) on a tiny table that was really meant for 2. When I asked to put the other 2 top next to us together with our tiny one I was immediately told just no which I thought was extremely rude. Our food also took an extremely long time to recieve after we ordered. Tables around us recieved their food before us so I was really disappointed in the service ant attitude. I really hope moving they canfix this because i really love the food but service is lacking.
