   Great traditional food, for a decent price. Also a very interesting wine list, with many local (Serbian and Croatian) wines. Cash only is a little unusual and inconvenient.

   Absolutely amazing! Definitely recommend for everyone to try out. It is delicious and everyone was so nice. There was live music while we were there and she had a wonderful voice!

   Most of our night went without service. We waited long intervals for help and when it finally arrived we were refused another glass of wine because there was another reservation but they never visited our table to ask if we needed anything. Overall poor service. Will not be returning.

    One of the very best and most unique restaurants in all of New York City! Authentic cuisine and atmosphere that simply cannot be found elsewhere in New York. Been coming here since the beginning. ♥️

    The owner(?) manager was more interested in hanging out at the bar or being on his phone than welcoming his paying customers. Very little interaction, I almost felt like we were a bother. I am 2nd generation American born Serb. I was introducing Serbian food and hospitality to a friend. The Zeljanica was delicious as a first course - actually it could have been a meal by itself. We ordered the mesano meso for two which is really enough for three, this was good but not great. I will not return.

    We sat outside and the weather was perfect. The street didn’t have much traffic. The food was excellent-we had been to Serbia last month it was just as good as there. I highly recommend it!

    We went to Kafana for a late lunch and were not disappointed. I had the pork schnitzel stuffed with ham and cheese. It was delicious. The cheese and ham were well-balanced within the schnitzel and the fries were perfectly seasoned. My husband had the figs wrapped in bacon with chicken liver wrapped in bacon and he loved his dish. The figs also had walnuts inside them. They were sweet and savory.

    This is place where you go if you prefer meet. I was expecting much better food overall. Serbian food is usually great. "Plećka" was amazing! I'll come back for that. But, everything else is overpriced for the quality. (Especially that they insist on cash.) It's definitely uncomfortable sitting on those old tinny chairs. The place needs a little refresh. Waitress was really helpful. Guests are decent people. Kids friendly.

    This place never disappoints. I love the food, beer, ambience. If you haven’t tried Serbian food, you must try this spot, you won’t be disappointed. Just keep in mind, they don’t take credit cards, it’s cash only.

    I have Balkan heritage and wanted to be here on my birthday with my spouse and our young adult daughter. If I could give the food six stars, I would. If I could give the wonderful service ten stars, I would. The atmosphere was just lovely—pleasantly festive without infringing on our ability to sit and enjoy each other and our spectacular meal.

    We wanted to take my wife to an authentic Serbian restaurant for her birthday being as she is from Serbia. My daughter found Kafana and we could wnot have been happier with the service the food selection and the quality of the food. The staff was wonderful accommodating and polite. And the place was clean And beautiful inside We will definitely return

    The food was fine. We ordered some appetizers, however, after about 35 min of eating the apps, the servers never came back to take dinner orders. Also included apps on the tab that we didn’t actually order and ended up having to pay for. We never ate dinner, so left after eating a few appetizers. When one of the party members went inside to get someone for the bill, the servers were sitting around a table with others just drinking. No excuse for bad service, especially when restaurants are struggling. This was in their control.

    Had an enjoyable dinner at Kafana. When I’m in NYC I always try to dine there. As a Serbian American, the food is always excellent and reminds me of my Baba’s cooking. And our server, Dushan, was very friendly and knowledgeable.

    Thanks, Mil, for a fabulous birthday celebration. Your food and hospitality are spectacular. Lamb shank, schnitzel, and branzino are our favorites, but everything on the menu is delicious. We are regulars from pre-pandemic days and will continue to sing your praises. We wish you good health and prosperity in the strange times we are living through.     A great place in the East Village for well-executed authentic food that isn't gimmicky. Walking in I felt like I was visiting a home rather than a restaurant. Intimate, comforting and a great alternative to the usual Italian or French restaurants.
