K & L Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Waitress didn’t pick up the clues about when to order and seemed a bit miffed we were not ready when she asked if we were ready to order.
Having French fries as the side to Petrale Sole was a poor choice. Had to ask for bread and butter. Brought a bottle of Pinot Noir and had to ask that the wine glasses fit the varietal. Not very sophisticated considering their pricing.
I'm not quite sure how to review this. I have been here before and always liked it. The ambiance is great, the wait staff is great, and usually, the food is great. Last time however, I ordered some fish (Sole Muniere) that came with fries. The fish was mediocre, and the fries were terrible. My husband had a burger and fries. Burger was pretty good, fries terrible. The oysters were excellent, and happy hour drinks reasonable. The entire meal was around $100, which can be expected with drinks and oysters but NOT worth it at all. I would like to see something interesting with a fish dinner. Maybe pureed root veggies, flash fried brussels sprouts, salad, really, anything but those dried up over-cooked very stale fries. I am willing to give this place another chance, but I'm hoping it's a lot better next time.
We were particularly unhappy with the service. Our waitperson was pushy, harsh, and seemed to be in a great hurry though there were very few other customers. She wanted our drink order as we were sitting, tried to order us appetizers before we had seen the menu, and was generally not service oriented. The food was fine, though way expensive for the quality.
We go here often, as we enjoy the food & service. My only complaint this time would be that they never do anything extra..such as a complimentary dessert for a birthday. I stated on my reservation it was my husbands birthday..a special one too! Most nice restaurants provide a small dessert as a treat. Oh well. I bought him a nice dessert. Otherwise, still one of our favorites!
We were fans of the smaller K&L before the remodel and expansion, and just hadn’t bonded with the newer version. Maybe it was growing pains as the kitchen adapted to the larger space, but we were disappointed and fell out of the K&L habit.
This week K&L was convenient after an event at the Center for the Arts, so we gave it another try, and had one of the best meals we’ve ever eaten there. Both the food and the service were spot on. Their oyster selection was good, our Caesar was classic, the grilled sardines a treat, and the lamb shank with risotto was swoon-worthy.
Setup the reservation online. Received an email back which was great. We had a 7pm reservation on 9-24-17. We arrived to a half full restaurant and were seated in the back corner with other people (not spreading people out). We asked to be moved outside since there was only one couple out there and not busy (shortly before we went out to the patio the couple finished). We were moved outside and sat there for over 20 minutes with no service at all. No water or drink order. We left and went to another local place that took care of us! This was a 10th anniversary dinner and they were aware when the reservation was scheduled online. We were not greeted with a congratulations or even a smile from the lady at the front desk. I own a service company and this establishment couldn't spell "customer service." Very upsetting since we came from OHIO.
Excellent food and service. Seated promptly (had a reservation). Our waiter Stav was attentive, friendly and engaging. Went with the Mac and Cheese as an appetizer (a little comfort food). I thought is was an "interesting" choice for an appetizer but it was great selection by my table mates (best shared among 3-4 or a meal by itself for younger picky eaters). We had the sole, a burger and salmon. All top notch. My daughter, who is very particular about salmon, gave it her highest marks. It was a relaxed, memorable meal.
The service here was so bad that I am actually writing a review. If it wasn't for the bus boy ( who was excellent ) we would have walked out as no server came to our table for the first 20 minutes we were there. He finally realized that no one had come to our table so he was able to summon one for us. Our server came and took our order and that was the last we saw of him. Throughout our dinner random servers came by our table with things we didn't order asking us if we had ordered them. Everyone who worked tonight seemed confused and like they had no idea what they were doing.
The food was decent but nothing spectacular. Our rare date night was a huge disappointment and we will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone.
K&L is a restaurant that we will continue to go to on occasion. We find at times the food to be a bit inconsistent. Some of the entries are too heavy on the sauces and the french fries, or pommes frites. My brother-in-law's fish entree was swimming in a cream sauce that he remarked had little flavor. The plate was laden with french fries. My brother-in-law, who has a healthy appetite, did not eat too much on his plate for these reasons. My soup (I believe was the butternut squash soup) seemed to lack flavor and was heavy on the olive oil. On the other hand, my husband, and his friend ordered the salmon which they both enjoyed, although my husband thought the salmon was a tiny bit overcooked. Since Karen and Lucas are now less involved in the kitchen, the attention to culinary details may not be quite up to what it was previously.
Food was great. Service was excellent. Nice dining room and a decent selection of wines. Went for lunch yesterday with my husband and parents. There was something for everybody - both healthy and indulgent options. We started with some oysters - clean and fresh and tasty mignonette. We then had Ahi tuna tartare, French onion soup - both delicious. My husband had the Cobb salad - fantastic. Other items we ordered were the chicken sandwich with green chile, smoked trout salad, and the shrimp salad. All were quite good.
Noticed in the way out they have nice happy hour specials. We'll be back.
Not very good all around. With only one night in Sebastopol, my boyfriend and I were disappointed that we chose to eat here. Service was bad since a busser didn't show that night (but the staff was very apologetic and they comped our dessert). Food was mediocre, and the menu was set up badly. I ordered petrale sole & the only thing it came with was French fries. My boyfriend ordered mussels and literally all he got was a pile of mussels with French fries on the side. No pasta or anything to go with the clams, and no vegetables with either of our dishes. I can understand bad service due to a no-show, I work in the restaurant industry myself and it happens quite often, but the dishes in general weren't given much thought when they were created and are not well-rounded at all.
Normally we love the service at K&L, but on this evening the bus service was not good.
The bus person, a young Asian women was most of the the problem. Our water was re filled once. The temperature outside was 102 that evening. I had to wave a server over for a refill of water. We were also not given a basket of bread until I asked our server for one, after being there for 20 minutes, while other tables were given bread and water around us. She apologized. It was the bus persons responsibility. Also, We were never asked if we would like another drink, while my empty wine glass and my husbands empty cocktail glass sat on our table, empty! Our bread plates sat on our small table, dirty the whole time, after we finished our shared appetizers. This was very annoying, too. Our server was great, other then not checking on our drinks to be refilled at all. We will come back and try again. If this type of service ever happens again, we will complain to the manager on shift. We were so disappointed that we didn't even want to stay and have dessert. On a good note, our server and the food was great as usual!
We were a party of three. There was a woman reading in the far corner of the restaurant, and our wait-person sat us close to her. I think this could have been finessed.....why not seat the people (on a Weds.) who will be "talking", furthest away from the other customer?
The tall guy with the beard was a genial and professional, friendly, waiter.
We wish that the guy in the dreadlocks on his cellphone had not been occupying the bar. Was he the owner? What is with that? Thumbs down unless he is a major investor. UGH.
Food was excellent. Five thumbs up!
First off, our server Adam S. was just great. He anticipated, was cheery, knows the menu and even split one glass of wine between the two of us. The food was excellent. My husband loves the sole and I am all over the menu. Had the roasted shrimp "Louie" which was far better and different than the usual gloppy mess! Our Manhattans were also perfectly balanced and interesting. All staff is warm, attentive and friendly. A great place for almost any occasion. (I would hesitate to bring children under 9 or 10 here tho.)
My wife and I have been going to K & L for many years. Since the expansion and reopening, while we like the ambiance of the new dining room, the food has suffered, it's not anywhere near the quality and consistency it was before the expansion. It's still good but not as good.
Love this place. I have come here on an off over the years and it is always a pleasure to come to. The food is great , the service wonderful and great charm. I have watched it goes through its permutations of growth and it hasn't lost anything in the growing.
This restaurant is one of our all-time favorites, but since we no longer live near-by, we seldom get to dine there anymore. For our anniversary this year, we Ubered over and back and had an outstanding evening. The restaurant now features a full bar with signature cocktails and craft beers, an oyster bar, wood fired grill, and enlarged dining area. This is a true bistro experience and features many traditional dishes. The menu is based on seasonal ingredients and French-inspired dishes such as chicken liver crostini, crispy duck confit with lentils, house-made Boudin Blanc Sausages with Frites (best in the County) and Cassoulet. Seafood items like grilled Sardines, Sole Meuniere, Mussels Marinière, and Ahi Tuna Tartare are among our favorites. The friendly service and atmosphere add to the overall enjoyment. We will have to go back soon as there are so many favorite dishes, one night can’t begin to cover them all. This is a real gem of a restaurant and one not to be missed!
Went to restaurant due to what appeared to be a great menu. My husband loves Mussels with white wine broth and pomme frites and was on the menu. Mussels we're very large and tasted sort of "dirty" plus there was very little broth. Other entrees were ok, but nothing special. Presentation was also lacking. With so many other great restaurants to choose from in our county, see no reason to go back. Also background music was too loud.
