Was very nice as usual! The menu was different then last year, the lamb was very good along with the salads we tasted. The wine list was lovely and I also Love the honey bee cocktails. Service as always was the best we find in DC when we visit. Made the evening very enjoyable.
We were happy to return to Juniper on our visit to Washington, DC. The crab cakes were tasty and this was a generous sized appetizer and therefore great for sharing. The other appetizer for our table was grilled octopus with a pretty and flavorful paprika aioli. My salmon with lentils was perfect with a crispy finish and delicate interior. My desert was a stand-out with sweet corn ice cream with a garnish of crunchy freeze dried corn kernels, a small piece of spoon bread and then a small pyramid of basil and black pepper pannacotta.
Our overall experience was disappointing. Juniper is the flagship restaurant of The Fairmont Georgetown, and says it features local farm-to-table selections. Menu options were fairly limited. I had the Applewood smoked hanger steak, and it was fine, but very heavy on the 'smoke' and not especially delicious. The 'chorizo polenta' was exceptionally mushy and almost flavorless. My husband did enjoy his lamb chops. The food was surprisingly lukewarm.
We were the only diners for the first half hour, so it wasn't as if the kitchen was overwhelmed. We also had spotty service. The server was friendly, but seemed inexperienced. He decimated the cork when opening the $100 bottle of wine we ordered - and as the cork disintegrated, he apologized and said he'd take it back for another. Then returned moments later saying he'd managed to remove the cork...and poured for us - Chateauneuf du Pape - WITH bits of cork. Yes, we could have sent it back. We felt bad for our flustered server and fished out the cork ourselves.
As we were staying at The Fairmont, the restaurant was convenient and the management was welcoming. However, I would not choose to return.
The meals were perfect! The snapper was perfectly cooked with just a touch of heat from the jalapeno. The chicken was anything but boring: Cannellini Bean & Pancetta Cassoulet , Baby Zucchini & Patty Pan Squash and pan jus make the plate perfectly delicious! The portions were so generous that we neither finished our dinner nor had room for dessert. Victor was attentive without hovering, as always!
The food was not very good quality at all. 2 orders of pancakes, a side of chicken sausage and a side of potatoes for $60. I am a pancake fanatic and connoisseur and the pancakes were less than acceptable. They lacked fluffiness and we’re supposed to be buttermilk but they tasted like pancakes you might buy frozen at a grocery store and defrost in the microwave. Extremely disappointing. The food was room temperature and the potatoes were undercooked. I enjoyed the chicken sausage however.
This used to be one of our favorite restaurants when visiting DC. We had not been here for a couple years, and were very disappointed by the food. Extremely limited menu choices. Portions now quite small.
Service is still attentive, and the noise level low.
Fantastic service from Victor who provided us with great wine recommendations for our meals. I had the short rib with pappardelle pasta and burrata salad with tomatoes topped with a delightful citrus dressing; my husband had the hangar steak and beet salad.
Took forever for our order
To be taken despite my calling ahead and saying we were in a rush. Lunch was supposed to be one hour and was 30 min over because it took forever to order! Also Caesar was overdressed. When you pay to dollar you expect top service and this was not what we received
Had a reservation for a late dinner at 8:15pm and immediately got the feeling we were in for a less than desirable experience. Our server didn't introduce himself, offer bread (which we had to ask for because the website said the bread w/honey was amazing, and it was indeed the best part of the meal) and his brow was sweaty... which was incredible because the restaurant was FREEZING. It was so cold that when we got back to our hotel room across the street at the Park Hyatt, my wife jumped into the tub to warm up. The only saving grace to the meal was that we were seated next to a lovely couple who we enjoyed speaking with. Speaking of the Park Hyatt, for a completely opposite experience, go to the Blue Duck Tavern. In a word: Wonderful.
Long story short, traffic was horrible and we decided to ditch our car and have dinner. Lovely night so we sat outside at Juniper. One of the best burgers I have EVER had; unfortunately, it's their special so don't know if it will be on menu long. Juniper has a very limited menu but locally sourced.
We didn't realize this restaurant was at the Fairmont Hotel. The Fairmont is a very nice hotel, don't get me wrong, but essentially, it was a traditional hotel restaurant, therefore lacking in ambiance and character. The service was pretty slow and it wasn't busy. The food however, made up for the lack of service and ambiance. We had the bagels and lox, crab cake, ham and egg sandwich and fresh carrot ginger juice, all very well done.
It's not that it was terrible, but I had the distinct feeling that the second we walked in, our original waiter didn't want to serve because he was tired at the end of a long shift on a cold Sunday night. I get that, but it took forever for the new waiter to come over. Then, once he did it just seemed like he was confused. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly, but the food was just meh...Honestly, I can't remember what we ordered. Maybe I just caught them on an off night.
Nicely located for the Washington Circle location of hotels and GW hospital. Quiet, which is nice for adult conversation. Nice decor. Food only average in taste and value for the three times I have dined here. Will move on to other restaurants in the future.
What happened to Juniper? We used to love this restaurant. It has a lovely atmosphere and is conveniently located in the neighborhood for impromptu dinner with friends and family. We loved the previous menu, with a variety of delicious choices for different eating styles.
On our last visit, it seemed as though they were weathering some kind of management crisis (no idea if that's true). Staff was sparse. Service was slow. The menu was a one page of extremely limited selections. The prices were two notches above "aggressive" and felt exploitive (lowest price glass of wine was $15. A hamburger was @$25.00. At that point, one's tolerance for peccadillos substantially is weakened.
I'm hoping this is all due to the major construction in the hotel and will be corrected. It was a favorite before.
We visited Juniper while on a visit to Georgetown on Presidents Weekend. Because of the holiday and the unexpectedly warm weather, many of the restaurants in the main GTown dining area were full. But we were able to get a table at Juniper and we were very glad we went the extra few blocks. The restaurant is very attractive and the staff very attentive and friendly. We shared a calamari dish that was spicy and sweet and very tasty. I had shrimp and lobster risotto which was delicious. My husband had the seafood special which was very tender and tasty. The wine selection was very good. There was also a very attractive bar area which was open late into the evening.
We went for Sunday brunch and on the menu outside it says the buffet is $26 and that there are a la carte options. When we were seated we asked for a menu but were told the buffet was the only option. The food was okay with one long table for the main foods and a smaller table for desserts. Our waiter pretty much disappeared after the first 30 minutes and when we asked for the check it took him 30 minutes to finally bring it to us. Turns out Sunday brunch actually costs $48 but this was not stated anywhere. It was definitely not worth that much and if we had known we never would have eaten there.
The service, from the hostess to the bus staff was genuinely friendly and attentive, without hovering. The meal was very good, with nice presentation, and we appreciated that when we asked to share a salad, they plated it separately, which some places won't do. My only constructive criticism of the food, which I shared with our waiter, is that the salmon special, while seared to perfection, was over salted. I also thought the wine prices were excessively inflated, which impacted my value rating. The restaurant has a cozy feel, with comfortable and spacious seating. Because it is in a hotel, there were some families there with small children, but the noise level was minimal and it was easy to carry on a conversation across the table. If you are comfortable with Georgetown pricing, I would recommend this restaurant for a nice date atmosphere with good, locally sourced food.
