We visited in late December for a birthday dinner. The atmosphere was warm in feeling with a sense of stature. The architecture of Julia Morgan influenced the experience. My wife and I waited in the adjoining library for the rest of our party. We were seated on time with courtesy and respectfulness. Our dinner was excellently prepared. The service was timely and sensitive to our needs. Following our meal we leisurely enjoyed desserts and beverages.
Although we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated for our reservation, the food was terrific and the service good. It's refreshing to eat in a quiet spot where conversation can be held at a normal volume. If anything, portions could be smaller. Overall, it was a fine experience.
We eat here at least once a month as we are members of the City Club and do this or pay not to do it. Usually we are pleased. Since the current chef has returned from another engagement, the food is the same, the same, the same all of the time--good but no surprises. Last Saturday we waited one hour for our entree. No excuses.
The food is good and made very well. The service is attentive but the waiter is not friendly at all. We ask for a picture taken from a certain direction, but she insists on taking it from a direction most convenient to her. The restaurant is not even full or busy. She forgot our request for birthday dessert, and only after I made a comment about it, she comes with a scoop of ice cream and a candle.
This was our second visit to Julia's and this time we brought friends. So far, this is the best place we've found for an delicious dinner in an environment where you can have a quiet conversation. The servings are large and the service is absolutely excellent!!
The Julia Morgan building in which Julia's is located serves as a vehicle for time travel to a calmer era.
I have been to. Julia's many times over the past 4 years, but it seems to be getting better each time I do, especially on the food quality standard. This past week, our party of 4 had 3 great dishes: roasted duck, sautéed sole, and pork tenderloin. Each was perfectly cooked and surrounded by fantastic accompaniments.
And I don't think there is a more romantic setting (in the old Julia Morgan-designed Berkeley City Club. Classic neo-classical architecture.
We go to Julia's for each of our birthdays and occasionally when we have out of town guests. As I say, better and better.
Tony is the consummate waiter, knowledgeable, and professional! After we shared some of our Chateau Monbousquet with Chef Marcon he came out and chatted with us about his exciting plans for more classic French dishes in the coming months--just like a Michelin star restaurant!
We love Julia's and usually have a great experience there. This time it was my wife's 50th birthday. I called the day before because she is dairy and gluten sensitive. They said I could bring a dessert for her, since they did not have anything. When we got there, the hostess was nice and took the dessert back to the kitchen. Our waiter came out a bit later and told me he could not serve it since the chef said it was a liability! I told him I called the day before and they approved, since they did not have a dessert she could eat. He ended up bringing out the dessert after dinner, but it was still in the packaging. Very disappointing service overall. Seemed like our waiter was just unhappy to have to serve us.
I can’t give Julia’s a bad review because of the location. The food is terrible, but the ambience is so wonderful that it is worth going there. The chef (cook) really should be ashamed. The Croque Monsieur sandwich was two very thin slices of Very Bad Bread (shocking in the Bay Area), accompanied by a small, vinegary salad. It was insulting, really. More like food you would encounter in an assisted living facility and quite overpriced for a Wonder bread sandwich. What a shame. Also, the prices on the website don’t match the menus.
Still, no one can deny the charm of the Berkeley City Club. I suppose it’s just safer to go there for drinks or else eat first.
This was my second visit to Julia's and it did not disappoint. The service was exceptional at every level, hostess, table crew, and wait staff. They kept our water glasses full, were courteous and friendly, and attentive to all of our needs. The food was great; well prepared, well seasoned, tender and delicious. It was a wonderful dinner in an elegant, comfortable setting. There were floral arrangements at every table and it was very inviting and is definitely luring us to come back soon for another memorable meal.
Good food in lovely surroundings. In fact, two outstanding features are the architecture of the restaurant and the entire building and the fact that you're able to have a conversation because the noise level is low. In addition the food is interesting and well prepared, and the service is very good. I look forward to going here again.
As always, Julia's did not disappoint. Everything was top-drawer: from the unique Julia Morgan medieval-style ambiance straight trough to the perfectly prepared and presented dishes. Attentive and super-competent wait-staff. A perfect evening! (Generous cocktails and superb wines as well.)
After living for many years in Berkeley, Oakland and various Contra Costa communities, we finally discovered Julia's. It was perfect for people (like us) who enjoy a quiet, charming setting while dining on great food. The menu isn't extensive but is sufficiently varied to please many tastes. Terrific service helps as did the fact that my wife could get gluten-free bread!
Too many mistakes to recommend - wrong drink, wrong main course, loud music from the fraternity party at the other end of the building, uncomfortable chairs, dark room. On the plus- beautiful building, the waiter fixed the mistakes, most of the food was good (skip the mushroom pappardelle).
I need a couple of extra stars to add for Julia's--five isn't enough. The food, service and ambiance were spectacular. I came home and simply pondered the deliciousness of the meal for an hour. A beet salad with blue cheese mousse was truly memorable. Beef tenderloin! Duck breast! Desserts were understated and not overly sweet, so rare. The only challenge was a party with loud music in the next room which affected the otherwise lovely calm and peaceful atmosphere. Still, I'd go back in a heartbeat.
The hostess was so pleasant and helpful, ensuring we received our ideal table. The bartender was equally accommodating. Server seemed a bit overwhelmed/rushed. That was the only negative of the evening. Food was delicious. Ambiance perfect. Overall the special event dinner for two I was hoping to have.
Wonderful meal! We are still talking about it as if it were a great movie we saw. We ordered the pork and the duck and both portions were generous, perfectly cooked and presented with classic French reduction sauces that were sublime. The salmon appetizer was so delicious and creative.

My fish was excellent as usual. Wife had pork tenderloin prepared in a new, special, tender, but with a crispy top. Tenderloin had been marinated in a wonderful blend of French and German flavors. Chef is French. Dessert was de-constructed French Toast, a little too fancy for me but unique flavors. Good for dates, or a quiet meal in a peaceful setting. Highly recommended.
