Good food in lovely surroundings. In fact, two outstanding features are the architecture of the restaurant and the entire building and the fact that you're able to have a conversation because the noise level is low. In addition the food is interesting and well prepared, and the service is very good. I look forward to going here again.

I always enjoy lunch or dinner at the City Club. One comment, however, is that even with the new chef there has been no significant change in the lunch menu, which is pretty limited. Maybe it's time to introduce some new items to the menu.

As always, Julia's did not disappoint. Everything was top-drawer: from the unique Julia Morgan medieval-style ambiance straight trough to the perfectly prepared and presented dishes. Attentive and super-competent wait-staff. A perfect evening! (Generous cocktails and superb wines as well.)

After living for many years in Berkeley, Oakland and various Contra Costa communities, we finally discovered Julia's. It was perfect for people (like us) who enjoy a quiet, charming setting while dining on great food. The menu isn't extensive but is sufficiently varied to please many tastes. Terrific service helps as did the fact that my wife could get gluten-free bread!

My two friends and I had the most delicious lunch! Crepes and a grilled chicken on flatbread were enjoyed by all of us. The dessert of French toast was so delicious we asked to see the chef to have him tell us how he made it! Definitely will go again.

Too many mistakes to recommend - wrong drink, wrong main course, loud music from the fraternity party at the other end of the building, uncomfortable chairs, dark room. On the plus- beautiful building, the waiter fixed the mistakes, most of the food was good (skip the mushroom pappardelle).

I need a couple of extra stars to add for Julia's--five isn't enough. The food, service and ambiance were spectacular. I came home and simply pondered the deliciousness of the meal for an hour. A beet salad with blue cheese mousse was truly memorable. Beef tenderloin! Duck breast! Desserts were understated and not overly sweet, so rare. The only challenge was a party with loud music in the next room which affected the otherwise lovely calm and peaceful atmosphere. Still, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

The hostess was so pleasant and helpful, ensuring we received our ideal table. The bartender was equally accommodating. Server seemed a bit overwhelmed/rushed. That was the only negative of the evening. Food was delicious. Ambiance perfect. Overall the special event dinner for two I was hoping to have.

Wonderful meal! We are still talking about it as if it were a great movie we saw. We ordered the pork and the duck and both portions were generous, perfectly cooked and presented with classic French reduction sauces that were sublime. The salmon appetizer was so delicious and creative.
Thank you, Chef! Grimaud!

My fish was excellent as usual. Wife had pork tenderloin prepared in a new, special, tender, but with a crispy top. Tenderloin had been marinated in a wonderful blend of French and German flavors. Chef is French. Dessert was de-constructed French Toast, a little too fancy for me but unique flavors. Good for dates, or a quiet meal in a peaceful setting. Highly recommended.

Had the appetizer with Persimmon & Goat cheese with a truffle vinaigrette and a side of spring greens. The truffle played well with both the persimmon and the goat cheese. It was a great bite.

For an entrée, I ate the most delectable petrole sole. It had red grapes and a beautiful light citrus sauce and collard green. It was power punched with flavor but was not too rich, making it a perfect choice for lunch (not a heavy meal, rather light and tasty)!

this is a quiet, pleasant restaurant with quiet, unobrusive service and unassuming, tasty food. The atmosphere is reserved and sedate. Tables are nicely spaced well apart, so it's a great place to have a serious conversation. The food is good. Not spectacular, but well prepared and excellent ingredients. We had an absolutely delicious corn soup and crepe with spinach and mushrooms. I prefer my crepes a bit thinner, but the mixture was delicious and the portion quite large. With a glass of wine the bill was $40 - not cheap, but very reasonable.

We had a great time celebrating with a birthday dinner. Made a reservation for 8:30pm. The restaurant info indicated it will be closed at 8:30. The staff was very nice and accommodating. Didn’t rush us at all. For a good period, we had the entire dining room for just the two of us. Enjoyed both the food and the historical design of the space.

The Club has recently hired a new chef who is slowly changing the menu. I had the Petrale sole which was excellent, nicely seasoned, over a bed of vegetables. My wife had the beef, which was melt-in-your-mouth tender. We eat at the Club once or twice per month and always enjoy it, but now it seems like the quality of the food may have gone up another step.

This has been a favorite of ours for 2+ years. At lunch on Thursday, there were many diners but only one waitress. While she truly did the best she could, the service left much to be desired. I have always enjoyed the salad appetizers. This week, the ham served with the persimmon and burrata salad tasted like deli sliced meat.

We (my husband and I) are members of the City Club and have been waiting to be excited by the new chef. Our last visit was on a weekday evening at 6:30. Our service was slow and apathetic. The food was good but not great and not very imaginative. Since food is one of the reasons we keep our membership, this was disappointing.

I am sorry, but after reading so many positive reviews, we were quite disappointed with the food. The gnocchi was most unusual, but not in a good way. The fish was dry. The duck was pretty good. The service was lovely as is, of course, the setting in a grand old fashioned way. But it was expensive and mediocre. Julia's, you can do better!

Lovely building and great food. They were very careless with the credit card and charged us for the wrong bill. It was a 45 minute hullabaloo getting it straightened out, which ruined the evening. I was with my 85-year old mother who was exhausted by the fuss. What a shame. The place is otherwise nice.

My boyfriend and I decided to try out Julia's for a Saturday date night. The place was absolutely beautiful and quite historic. The only downside I saw was that with my boyfriend and I only being 23, the waitress staff I felt like they kept laughing at us thinking we were too young to be eating at such a nice restaurant. Otherwise, the food was delicious and combined unique flavors that complemented each other very well. I'd definitely go back, but now I'll just expect to get a little side eye.

Come to Julia's for the architecture, stay for a lovely meal. I had the duck, which was delicious. My date had the sole, also extremely tasty. Next time I will be ordering the corn soup. Definitely tour the grounds while you're there. Hidden surprises behind every corner. Do yourself a favor and wiki Julia Morgan before arriving. You'll be glad you did.

Our entrees--sole and tenderloin--were so good we had to compliment the chef. Best sole I've every had. Beautiful flower arrangements, lovely table settings. It's a bit quiet, could use more life. And greeter at door could be more welcoming and charming. Can't tell if she's snooty or just shy -- someone with more warmth and good cheer is needed. Maybe give the '20s music a rest and include some classical and/or jazz.
It's not a kids' restaurant, but I've taken my granddaughter, now 11, there twice. She loves the food! It's very pricey, but worth the treat to take her at least once a year.

We were pleasantly surprised by both the quality of the food and the excellent service we received at Julia's. The server and chef went out of their ways to accommodate the no-salt restrictions of one in our party of three. Not only did they find a way to meet her needs, but came up with a creative way to enhance her meal with alternative ingredients.
I started with the beet salad which was excellent.
My wife and I ordered the roast breast of duck, which came on a bed of greens with a very delicious sauce and three poached figs on the side.
The portions were more than generous. We ended up taking home much of the duck breast. Unfortunately, we did not have room for dessert which included several gluten free options. Any one of them would have been a winner, based upon the quality of the rest of our meals.

Julia's is the gem of Berkeley restaurants. It is hidden in the Berkeley City Club , a building designed by Julia Morgan. Dining there is a throwback to a hundred years ago when dining was elegant and food was superbly prepared and presented. The menu is limited but every dish is to die for. Service was over the top, attentive but not distracting. If you enjoy eating good food go to Julia's.

A memorable dining experience in a historic building designed by a woman architect!! The food was superb -- beautifully presented, perfectly prepared, delicately seasoned. And the service was perfect. Our delightful server, Saroeun, was professional, helpful, discreet, and always aware of what we might need. We love eating in the special ambiance of this lovely local restaurant.
