Julian - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
This was the 2nd time dining at Julian, we always agree to try a restaurant twice even if the first experience wasn't ideal. It was a gorgeous Kansas City night to sit on the patio and we were very excited as the night began; however we ended up disappointed. We had a reservation for 8pm(Friday) and apparently that is too late to have your choice of meal for this restaurant. They were out of 3 of the 7 entrees. Service was pretty slow and two of the male employees seemed to being having some tension. The food was fine, nothing spectacular. The sauce for our mushroom dish was clearly made ~a day or so before (no issues with that) and stored because it came out on our plate still partially solidified. Cocktails were Ok but were different then what was described on the menu. I feel like Julian is not "involved" in the restaurant or have a handle on what's going on when she isn't present. I would be very frustrated if this were my business.
Simply amazing! Austin was our experience concierge, and was extremely knowledgeable and professional. Everything from the mussels to the salmon deviled eggs, to the trout...exquisite!! I couldn't be happier that our 1 year anniversary was shared at Julian! Thank you Celine for making our night wonderful, and we will miss Julian for sure! :)
We had a great first visit to Julian, and are looking forward to trying Chef Tio's other property, The Belfry. Julian closes July 4th, and we understand why. Seating space is at a premium, and parking can get tough.
Chef Tio came out and spoke to nearly every table. She told us which dishes would be included on The Belfry menu (the smoked salmon deviled eggs for one!). We were very impressed by her style and her food.
My husband and our friend had the Camp Lindo Farms Chicken, and I had the Chef's Vegetarian special, which was a "Southwest Corn Succatash" over Basmati rice. It was fresh, light, and delicious! For dessert we tried the White Peach Upside-down Cake and the butterscotch bread pudding. Both were big hits.
Having moved to the area in late 2014, we are sorry we didn't "discover" Julian until now. But we have met Chef Tio and will most definitely follow her on her new adventure.
Sadly Julian is closing soon, which is why we went. The Belfry is worth checking out if you like Julian as they are both by Chef Celina Tio, which is what brought me there in the first place years ago. Not the least expensive place you'll ever eat, but you won't be sorry to pay for the quality you are receiving.
I simply love Julian's restaurant!! Celine Tio is an amazing chef! The food is fantastic and consistently prepared. I am crazy about the oyster mushrooms with paprika aioli appetizer. I order them EVERY time I visit. Two other favorite appetizers are the hard boiled eggs with house smoked salmon, and mussels in a garlic sauce. The mussels are prepared perfectly (not chewy or rubbery).
For entree dishes, I enjoy the seared salmon or the basted beef with red wine sauce.
Many locals like to eat outside on the patio, when the weather is nice, but my family prefers the indoor dining. We like the open kitchen so we can watch either Celine, or one of her well trained chefs prepare the food. The restaurant is welcoming, not a stuffy atmosphere, but "down to earth" chic, with photos of Kansas City on the walls, sprinkled in with personal pictures of Celine with her family and friends.
I have brought co-workers, friends, and family to Julian's and everyone has the same response - "What a great place"!
We ate at Julian for an early dinner on Mother's Day to avoid the brunch craziness. We had a toddler with us and Chef Tio and her staff did a great job at making the evening fun. The coated baby spoon that came with his dinner was a thoughtful touch. I have never been to a restaurant that did that. You can tell that it is a place that appreciates family diners.
The food was all delicious and we especially appreciate the vegan and vegetarian options. So many times, they just end up with side dishes or heavy pasta. The plate was beautifully bright, fragrant and satisfying.
If space allows, I recommend the patio. Music, people watching and the occasional friendly dog make for a charming atmosphere.
My husband and I went to Julian for our anniversary. It was a Wednesday night and we had most of the restaurant to ourselves. Started on the patio for drinks and apps and moved in when it stated getting rainy. The staff was very laid back and accommodating. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable compared to the quality of food. From the first bite of our roasted mushroom and aoli appetizer we knew everything was going to be amazing and the food lived up to that expectation. Great experience! Will go again!
We made reservations at Julian prior to visiting the Plaza Art Show. Given the fair going on, staff was very busy, but the food was delicious! We started with the roasted mushrooms, which were delicious. We both ordered the scallops and we agreed that they were some of the best scallops we've ever ate. They were served on a slice of potato with sautéed leeks and some greens. It was a beautiful presentation and everything was perfect. I can't wait for the next visit!
Blah decor. Food was fine but lots of good food in KC anymore with more ambiance, and I'm not talking fancy. Kitchen was open to be able to see inside and it was disheveled and didn't look very clean. Really important when you have an open kitchen. No reason to go back
Went here for a girls Saturday afternoon get-together. We're all transplants and relatively new to KC, so we've been trying lots of new restaurants just from Google searches and hearing things from other people. Glad we stumbled upon this one! It had been pouring rain for several hours and wasn't going to stop for many hours more, so the restaurant was surprisingly empty during our lunch. The lack of people that day must have been due the weather and not the quality of the restaurant--the food was fantastic. Even the girl who ordered a cheeseburger said it was the best one she had had in a long time. The other dishes everyone ate were very creative. The presentation of each one was really nice, and the food was delicious! I think the restaurant itself describes its atmosphere very accurately: "comfortably sophisticated". I loved it! I'd definitely recommend Julian to a friend.
The pan seared scallops are likely the best in the city. The menu is creative and a lot of the ingredients are locally sourced. The spaghetti with homemade chicken sausage is super good.
Good selection of wines at a reasonable price.
If you're a foodie, Julian will be your go to place.
There is outdoor seating, weather permitting.
My wife and I celebrated or 46th wedding anniversary with an early dinner at Julian. It was beautiful evening and we dined outside at our hostess’s suggestion. I was delighted we took her up on it. It was very comfortable and a great to people watch.
Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. We shared the Baby Hearts of Romaine salad and as our server suggested it was just right for us to share. My wife had the Basted Beef and it came out perfectly cooked and very tender. She loved the entire dish. I had the Seared Scallops with leaks and herbs and it was perfect, cooked to perfection and wonderfully seasoned. We also took advantage of the half price bottle of wine deal on Monday and Tuesday, so our total bill was quite reasonable.
We had a great evening and I would recommend Julian for any occasion.
Didn't rate the food as we didn't get to have any. Went to their Sunday Brunch Buffet with our daughters which was to be served from 10am-2pm. Had a reservation for 1030am. On arrival they didn't ask if we had a reservation but we were seated inside as requested. We were the only ones there. There were 4 people on the patio. The Buffet was on the bar counter. Our server told us he saw the salad bowl was empty were we going to want any salad? He advised he would have the kitchen prepare one if we really wanted the salad. So we proceeded to go check out the Buffet before doing anything else. There were 4 chaffing dishes one in which was to have potatoes...there was literally maybe a spoonful scoop. The remaining 3 chaffing dishes had minimal food in them not too mention the empty salad bowl. The server did not seem to be bothered when we advised we would not be staying. A true disappointment as we had read a lot about Chef Tio's food. Has so much potential as located in a quaint area with a nice big patio....that was very much empty. We will not return.
