Joshua Wilton House
Beautiful place. Food very average. Rockfish ruined by overcooking.
Excellent food preparation and presentation as well as great service. We were seated in a small room with a large noisy group which killed the ambience
To start with we stopped by the bar for drinks. Definitely enjoyed the smoked old fashion. A tasty creation and something we had not experienced before. After drinks we went into the dining room to enjoy a cozy table for two. Everything was excellent. This week's featured soup was made with a heavy cream and local mushrooms...amazing. Scallops, Filet and Noki are all excellent options that we can stand behind 100%. Also several good options on the desert menu but I can't get away from the creme brulee. Hope to be back soon!!
Wonder dinner. Food was delicious. Atmosphere and background music wonderful. Service was good and we would go there again. We enjoyed it very much.
It was a wonderful experience. It was extremely elegant and romantic. The dinner was absolutely delicious and the dessert was fabulous and even had Happy birthday written in chocolate on my plate!!!! The staff was welcoming and professional.
As was expected the service and food were splendid. We dined rather early so had the room and staff to ourselves for awhile. The Joshua Wilton House is THE place to go for a special occasion in Harrisonburg.
Went to take advantage of a “Taste of Downtown” special dinner offer. I was told that 1 of the appetizers listed on the specials was already out...my seating was 7:30pm!! There were 2 other options available, 1 I couldn’t eat bc of dietary issues and 1 I didn’t particularly like the food item and would never order it, if given a choice. I asked the server that since they were out of the specials appetizer, would it be possible to substitute 1 off the regular menu. I was told no...and the item I suggested was in fact, less expensive. That was the first disappointment.
The main course was a gnocchi dish with lamb ragout. The ragout was very good. The gnocchi looked and tasted like raw pretzel dough. Disappointment #2
Finally dessert was ordered. I ordered the goat cheesecake. What I got was a goat cheesecookie! No exaggeration, it was the size of 1 Oreo cookie...and I’m not talking double stuff!! Ridiculous disappointment #3.
I spent nearly $150 for 2...with tax and tip and was angry about the entire experience. Won’t be going back anytime soon!!
I loved the atmosphere. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious. We had the duck breast with cream spinach and potatoes. The service was great.
Excellent food and service. Highly recommend. Lovely ambience . Great value for the quality of food.
We love this restaurant! We went for the Taste of Downtown, and ordered the wine pairing to go with the pre-fixed menu. The staff's knowledge of wines is excellent, which leads me to believe they are well managed and trained! (We ended up ordering a case of wine, after tasting a wine we had not had before.) Also, the bartender is very willing to share his recipes, and to show how to make his drinks. It's a very pleasant restaurant to go to for a special occasion.
This is easily the best restaurant in town. I’ve had several meals here and it’s always great!
We enjoyed the food and the service was great. Parking was a minor issue. This is good for a special occasion.
We chose Joshua Wilton House for a special occasion because we've enjoyed previous visits very much. The waitstaff was gracious and attentive.
Traveling through Harrisonburg for a family gathering. We went on Open Table to find a good restaurant. As snobby Yankees, we had low expectations... however the Joshua Wilton House was an amazing surprise. Food, service and atmosphere top rate. Menu was exceptional and the specials for that evening included a wonderful Oyster soup and a wonderful Arctic Char entree. Attentive and warm servers, all very helpful. Also had a terrific Cosmopolitan from the bar! If we are back in the area again, we will make a special effort to return.
Food is always wonderful. The staff is friendly and helpful. A beautiful place with excellent food.
Great place to visit but a little pricey for what it is and what you get
Still the best in Harrisonburg after all these years!
We had the Valentine’s prix fixe menu and everything was delicious! The suggested wine pairings were excellent with the dishes, right up through dessert. Our server was Jenna and she ensured that we had everything we needed to enjoy a wonderful date night! We moved to the lounge after dinner for a digestif and then a cocktail and everything was wonderful. The dining room is simple and elegant and the lounge is warm and inviting with a wood-burning fireplace. We will definitely return as soon as we can! It might be a little more than the more casual places downtown, but the service definitely lives up to the cost!
I had not been to JW in decades- for the most part, I was not disappointed. The food was exquisite, the service was superior. I am giving four stars for the following reasons:
1) I would expect that a dining experience with prices as they were would have included a salad with our meal. It's not cliche to offer a salad as part of your meal when you're charging $30+ for a undersized portion of fish and a few dollops of sauce. Don't get me wrong, it was beyond delicious, but I left hungry.
2) In my opinion, fine dining would be served on a table that wasn't "dressed up" with linen showing lines from being folded over a metal table with card table top foam and plastic. I wanted the tables to match the ambiance- charming, historic, reflective of a landmark structure. The tables left me lack-luster.
3) Ask me why I look at these things, but the dirt, dust, crannies, and floors weren't as clean as I imagined. The curtains were stained at the top and bottom with dust (I'm guessing they hadn't been washed in a while), the windows and sills had lots of dirt and particles, and the carpet wasn't as pristine as one would expect.
While I am sure this seems petty, I was hoping for a little more of the WOW factor given the reputation and longevity of the JWH. I wanted to love everything, instead I loved the service, wanted more than an appetizer sized entree, and wished for more attention to detail in the space. Overall, good experience, merit-worthy food and flavors, and service that I wish I could take with me.
It is worth going to once, but the food is only mediocre. The ambiance is good. The service is good. Nothing special about any part of the meal.
Our server, Jenna, was exceptional. We enjoyed our evening for Date Night!
Celebrated a milestone birthday. The only thing that was an issue was that getting in and out of the inn was not handicap accessible. We were able to leave via through the kitchen in order to use the ramp-but that isn’t really ideal. Other than that is was terrific!
Outstanding dinner for four. Always a treat for special occasions. The food, service and ambiance make this one of the top restaurants in the area. Get their early and have one of their specialty drinks in the lounge.
Entree prep took longer than usual but once served was great.
Excellent food and service for our group of 18 for Sunday brunch!
The general manager, who is also a sommelier, prepared an incredible evening for a number of us who chose to partake in an abbreviated 2-course meal (the mussels and filet mignon were impeccable, and the cocktail set the evening perfectly) followed by a 3-course dessert tasting event accompanied by cocktail, white, and red wine. Even with just a short hiatus between dinner and dessert, we were offered complimentary champagne, a generous touch that rang true throughout the entire evening. The effort, thought, skills, and service every chef, server, and member of the staff brought to the table made for a dazzling display that was part sustenance and part entertainment, and totally relaxing. The fireplaces, cozy bar, and Victorian decorations throughout feel genuinely refined--not pretentious. This is the sort of place you want to share as much as you can. I'll be back!
Quaint, cozy environment, professional service , delicious food!
Nice dining experience. Would like a few more choices for entrees.
Wonderful service, exceptional food. A true gem in The Friendly City
Great place to have fine dining and impeccable service
Fourth or so visit in several years. Still delightful. A regular stop on the occasions we are in the area. Good service, good food, can dress-up and not feel out of place, which is nice. Menu is a little limited, but can always find something appealing. Will return.
We had a lovely birthday dinner with a group of friends. The food was delicious. And the service was great. Unfortunately, two of the entrees were sold out (our reservation was at 8pm). If you’re in the area having dinner here is a treat!!!
We drive to Harrisonburg when we can to eat at the Joshua Wilton House. The food is wonderful, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, interesting cocktails, just an overall great experience. We eat out a lot and this is one of our favorite fine dining places. Lucia
The food was good, atmosphere was nice. The house is beautiful and the wood burning fireplace is a nice touch. I was not expecting the prices to be so high, but it was a special occasion. Due to price, it may be several years before I come back, but I’m left full and happy.
It is always the best and my favorite restaurant in Harrisonburg. Living in Sarasota with so much diversity of cuisine, that is saying a lot.
Keep up the personnel and great job at food and atmosphere!
We were in the back room and it was very chilly. The menu is somewhat limited. The prices were very high for three scallops. The endive was dreadful. The red snapper was quite good.
We went for date night which is a bargain. You get the same food and the same service, but from a more limited menu. For whatever reason, the night we went, all the specials were also available for the date night special price. We both opted for the salmon and it was delicious.
My wife and I truly enjoyed the dining experience for out Anniversay. The meal and service was outstanding. Very friendly staff.
