Jo's American Bistro Ratings and Reviews
I chose this restaurant because it was within walking distance of our BnB and online reviews were good. Even though we showed up early we were seated right away at a nice table. We both had steak, mine from the prix fixe menu. Food was excellent, and even though the half bottle wine selection was limited our choice was very good. Service was excellent. We will definitely go back again.
This wasn't my first, nor will it be my last time going here. This place is always on point. One of the best cooked scallops I've ever had, and that's saying a lot with how many I've had at the seafood restaurants in Newport. Cocktail (Salted caramel apple) was deliciously dangerous. LOVE this place.
It was the last night of our stay in Newport and we wanted to eat where the locals ate. We booked through Open Table at the last minute and we were glad that we did as it was full, mainly of locals (as it turned out). There was a singer and guitarist playing to add to the atmosphere (although we could have chosen to eat upstairs, away from the general hubbub we chose a table close to the music). Good choice of wines and beers and the food choice was excellent. Would definitely recommend!!
Everything about our experience was ok....not great. First, I ordered a red wine and the waitress brought white. She quickly corrected it, but then BOTH ended up on the bill, and had to be corrected again. My grilled shrimp was a bit overcooked and not very warm. My friends salmon was not what I would call a 'restaurant quality' portion. My friend asked for the sauce on the side, but it came mixed in. All this said, the food tasted good. Service was attentive, and pretty much responsive to all our issues. The final annoyance was that they did not log our dining with Open Table, instead listing us as a no-show, requiring me to correct yet another error on their part. So, I would say good, not great.
We spent a nice evening at Jo's. my husband has the pork chop and I had the salmon on the prix fixe menu. The food was good, and it was a terrific value, with salad, glass of wine and dessert. Plus we enjoyed the music on a fall Sunday night. (We had a rather noisy group of 8 nearby, but made the best of it.)
Great table service and a creative menu well-prepared. No parking on site, but you can park at the shopping center lot across from the Tennis Hall of Fame. Nice wine selection and creative drinks. A good cost value as compared to the Newport waterfront establishments a half mile down over the hill! Surprisingly easy to get a reservation, considering its value and quality. Will definitely be back again :)
Wonderful food and great service. Gave Jo's a good rating because the noise level - caused by the live music - made conversation difficult making the experience "less than" for the two people seated next to the wide opening between the room we were in and the bar area with the performers.
Calimari was delightful, with light, barely there fried coating. My mother and I chose the pork chops with sweet potato, brussel sprouts and bacon hit the spot - too much for us to eat; leftovers made a great day after dinner. My daughter enjoyed the lobster salad roll, while my husband chose a dinner two appetizers for his dinner: the sauteed scallops with polenta and corn cream and the spicy shrimp in a Chinese bun.
The hostess first wanted to seat us nearer to the music - we asked for a table that was not near the music so she sat us at a table in an adjacent space. At the time, we did not know there was another dining room upstairs. If we were to go again, we would ask to be seated upstairs.
Here's a suggestion for Open Table - Your question about noise level did not give me an opportunity to respond 'too loud' or 'difficult to have a conversation over the music.' Many times when I'm dining at a restaurant with family or friends or a new acquaintance, the conversation is an important part of the experience. Because of this, I look for restaurants without live music in the dining rooms.
I had the half roasted chicken, which was juicy and nicely cooked--a good size portion. For dessert I shared a peach bread pudding, which was good, not great--a bit dry. My friend and I sat on the second floor. We had to ask that they turn down the piped vocal music. It was too loud and not a good choice for a restaurant where people want to talk to their dinner companions. The service was pleasant. There is not much of a view. The restaurant looks out onto a fairly busy main street, and the view is of other buildings on the street. Newport is not known for its fine restaurants. This one seemed less touristy than those along the waterfront and docks, but I still would not go back.
The service was wonderful, the food was excellent. We ended up having two appetizers the scallops and jo's pizza and both were awesome. The chorizo polento was so yummy and corn potato puree I could eat all day. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Excellent service from Caitlin. The restaurant itself seems extremely clean. The food arrived in a timely manner. The pizza is tasty as well as the quesadillas.
The only negative thing I would say is it is a tad bit pricey but I would definitely recommend it.
