Jonathan's - Ogunquit Ratings and Reviews
Great live music with wonderful food/cocktail options (blueberry martini!) We've enjoyed Jonathan's twice this summer for a great dinner and excellent live music. Look forward to seeing who you have next year (Ryan Montbleau and Adam Ezra Group were both EXCELLENT choices!!)
Food was great as always, the service a little lacking. We went for a dinner and concert the other night and while the food was tasty with the oysters and the mushroom paparadelle being standouts, we had to wait forever for service then when we did get our drink order taken, we mentioned we would probably order wine with dinner. They brought dinner and didn't even wait for us to ask about wine and never came back until dinner was over. I think it might have a little to do with the multi-server at each table, each person may assume the other has taken care of something. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have multiple servers, but they need to make sure they each are covering something.
Dinner on a Saturday evening was superb. Love the scallops!
We returned Sunday evening for an after dinner drink in the bar. Loved the duo playing piano and sax. They were fun and friendly.
The atmosphere at Jonathan's is extremely inviting.
A return visit is a must!
I'm sorry to say that we were quite disappointed. We came after the theater at 6:15, were seated right away, waited upon with water and an appetizer by Balford, who was a sweetheart, but as of 8:00 were still not served dinner. We spoke to the manager who said he'd see right to it, but we were still not served, although others who had come after us were. At that point, we notified the manager that we were leaving. We had a long ride home and it had gotten late. I'm just surprised that a restaurant that serves a theater clientele, which should be conscientious about timely service based on that, would fail so miserably in that department.
arrived on time and was faced with a 20 minute delay for our table.......booked it early as we had theater tickets..............
everything is ordered via and "ipad".......kinda like Olive Garden.....?.....steak ok but served with lukewarm mashed potato's...........primary wait person attentive but so many different folks serving, no one knew what was going on.
finally after presenting my cc, another person walks up with the folio and asks, "is this you?" . Dunno...........what/whose card is it?
felt rushed the entire time there.............with so many other choices in the area, if you are looking for a relaxing evening, sure there are others in town.
We enjoyed dinner at Jonathan's after a day of sightseeing in Ogunquit. We were seated promptly and had a window table with a nice view of the restaurant's landscaping. A huge fish tank provided some visual interest in the dining room. The food was tasty - I had the lamb special and my wife enjoyed the scallops. Service was a little disjointed - we had three different people waiting on is - but overall a very nice evening.
No idea what their German Potato salad actually was. Got appetizer and salad at same time, which I quickly ate for fear of getting the entree and check soon afterwards. Glad I know how to eat lobster, because they just put it in front of me and left. Not worth the walk for a second go-round.
Normally I don't review but we have been wanted to go Jonathan's for years and I was disappointed. I didn't mind the prices but when you are paying $23 - $38 dollars for a meal, I expect the table clothes to be pressed. It may sound petty but I am talking wrinkled! Menu stated bread and rolls were special and if you wanted more you would pay ,$3.00. The bread was a small triangle one a piece and the roll was a normal Parker House and they were not fresh. Our meal was good but nothing special. They had a special twin lobsters for $24...I think that was the draw for most people there. Unfortunately I don't eat lobster.
Took my wife there for a vacation date night and was not disappointed. The owner also has a farm where he grows his own organic vegetables and there were plenty for the menu that night. There is live theater and comedy available upstairs and don't worry while dinning downstairs on the main level you would never know that was happening because there is noise or sounds coming from there. The waitress was very attentive and the meal came at a great pace as we were able to finish each course before the next was presented. Good beer selection but not extensive, and a nice wine selection by the glass or bottle too. I highly recommend this location for a date or any special occasion. Be sure to check for upcoming shows as you may be able to do both if planned.
We loved Jonathan's! We have been going to Ogunquit for over 30 years and really never knew it was there. Decided to try a restaurant outside of the Cove and was pleasantly surprised. The staff is warm and friendly, Jonathan greets you upon arrival with a big smile and conversation setting the tone of the atmosphere to be that THIS is the best place to be---we felt welcome and well-taken care of over a nice stretched out 2 hour dinner before going to the playhouse. Food is on the higher end, but being farm-to-table, it is understandable. Our dinners were excellent (salmon and scallops) and the homemade rolls, bread and blueberry butter were to die for! We also had the apple crisp for dessert---deadly! ;)...we will definitely be back!
My wife and I both ordered the twin lobster special. The lobsters, oops "lobstahs," were very tasty and well worth the "mess" that accompanies the usual lobster cracking and picking.
For desert, we chose the chocolate mousse and the crème brûlée and were not disappointed.
The only discordant note was that our radish and walnut salad was devoid of walnuts. Nary a single walnut could be found among the greens and radishes. We told both of our servers about the absence of walnuts. They both looked horrified, but neither one of them returned with walnuts. No one said anything. Nothing was done either by management such as cancelling the charge forgone of our deserts.
Service was good overall.
Our experience was beyond our expectations.
Service, FOOD, ambiance all combined to make this a memory we will have to repeat soon. Though we live over an hour away, we will gladly revisit Jonathan's. If you are quite particular about your seafood as we are, it appears Jonathan's chef/s have master this cooking art. (Their seafood pasta dish was perfectly cooked - fabulous!) Also, their elderberry martini has made me a fan for life.
I usually give this restaurant a 4 or 5 star rating. We went on a monday night this time and got a very different experience. The service wasnt as professional. The water glasses had lipstick stains on them. My sons steak was over cooked and my other son did not get the lobster in his seafood pasta. The waiter brought it after he was almost finished on a separate dish. We had a drink 1st at the bar and two women were using F-bombs like crazy. Im not a prude by any means but you paid $240.00 for a meal, you expect more. I will give this restaurant another try though, because it has been a favorite of ours. Maybe on a weekend night rather than a weekday.
The main thing going for Jonathan's is it's nice ambience and good location walking distance from the terrific Orgunquit theatre. Food was good, not great, despite the high ( NYC ) prices. The bread selection was good, especially their famous brown bread, but a very chintzy bread basket and a $3 charge for extra bread was a turn off. The main disappointment however was discovering at the theatre after dinner that Jonathan's has a 10% discount for same day theatre goers. We discussed that we were going to see a show several times with our waiter , but he did not mention the discount. Apparently if you don't ask, you don't get it! Left us feeling slightly ripped off. We would definitely return to Orgunquit to see a show but will not return to Jonathan's.
It was my first experience dining here, my family have been fans for years. The menu is basic, the food cooked well but nothing extraordinary. The service was lackluster. Our server almost seemed disinterested throughout our entire meal. The end result was a decent meal, but no where near the almost 300.00 price tag (for three adults and one child) it came with. Seems like a tourist trap to me.
Very good fine....they were short handed and that is why I gave 3 stars. Waited 25 minutes for a drink and another 15 to order. I must say that the young lady serving water helping our waiter saved the night...she ordered our drink and came to our table to check on us and brought our check. It seems some restaurants are having a hard time getting help.
Ask to have Norman take care of you. He is the best. No, I am not his Mother. Bar service needs more help. 2 people are not enough to tend bar for the restaurant and bar area AND serve dinner in the bar. We saw people leave the bar without drinks after waiting for so long for drinks. Hope that isn't normal.
This was the second time we attended Jonathan's for dinner and a show. Although the menu was a bit limited, the meal was great. You also don't get the variety of a chain at a fine restaurant. The service was excellent as well. As for the show, what a great venue! I was about ten feet from Arlo Guthrie!
The worst ribeye steak I have had at restaurant, and that is the only kind of steak I will eat, very nice place, could not wait to eat there, but left totally unhappy. Shannon at the bar was fantastic, very, very busy at the bar the two nights we were there and she handled it very well!
