JoLe is a Contemporary American Restaurant owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Matt and Sonjia Spector, chef and pastry chef, respectively. JoLe is the couple's second restaurant venture. Their first was the wildly successful, Matyson Restaurant in Philadelphia. The menu changes daily and is designed for flexibility: guests can pop in for a few a la carte dishes, or settle in for a multi course tasting menu that they design themselves. This lends itself well to the casual wine country pace. Matt uses organic, locally farmed ingredients as much as possible. Sonjia's desserts are updated versions of things her mom and grandmother made. Everything on the eclectic wine list is offered by the glass, half bottle, or bottle. The beer list is also fun, consisting of a wide variety of microbrews. JoLe also offers a full bar, specializing in small batch liquors. Even without reservations, bar and chef's counter seats are available on a first come, first serve basis

JoLe Ratings and Reviews
We have eaten here many times, but this past time, our experience was very disappointing. 3 ppl cost $186?(includes $20 tip) and no alcohol. We had an appetizer, an entree, 2 desserts and tea. The portions have been scaled down to "mud-size." At $22-30 each, ordering 2, is quite costly. The food was good, but not spectacular. Perhaps this was because we came during winter on a Mon? We were not awed as in the past and we definitely will not eat here any more.
If you are a foodie then this is the place for you. My wife and I go her for
special occasions and anytime we are in town visiting my parents in Calistoga.
Matt does an excellent job with his dishes and the wine list by the glass selection is
awesome. If you cannot find a glass or a bottle of wine here to enjoy- you have some issues- many to choose from. Extra shout out to Sonja- she makes killer desserts to enjoy at the restaurant. We have also ordered birthday cakes for of family on several times through her bakehouse. The service is excellent and highly recommend
Overall food was okay/good. Nothing terrible or outstanding. Menu seemed all over the place from bar food to bistro to Asian. My only complaint was the rabbit - way over salted and not worth the $30. Duck was good. Gnocchi was good. Brussels sprouts salad was good. Bok choy was good but seemed out of place. The building and hotel/adjoining bar is a nice spot if you're in the Calistoga area.
The food was spicy, tasty and greatly presented in the plates, but the meal was a bit expensive. We had no salad, no wine, no desert and no coffee, yet the bill was close to $70. Portions were not very generous either. Overall a great restaurant, but not for every occasion.
We visited JoLe with friends who had a variety of dietary likes/dislikes. One in our group was vegetarian. Another just wanted small bites. JoLe's menu had unusual dishes that our varied group thoroughly enjoyed. Great martini and knowledgeable waiter re: wines. We couldn't have chosen a better place in Calistoga for dinner.
The flavors are balanced and delicious. I prefer places like this with small menus so everything is fresh and not from the back of the freezer. You should check the menu first to be sure everyone in your party will be happy with the selection. After day of wine tasting, you will find a great selection of cocktails.
What a find in the Napa Valley: a lovely, relaxed, high-quality Cal-French bistro. Popular with locals as well, this dinner compared favorably with our previous night's dinner at Auberge du Soleil (and we really like Auberge, having gone multiple times). Good service, pleasant dining room (it's on the ground floor of the Mt. View hotel in downtown Calistoga), and a great flexible menu. You can do a tasting menu of varied length from the regular menu selections, or just order whatever you like. Menu changes constantly, so don't worry about what we had - just go!
We dined here one night while staying in Calistoga. I went out on a whim and random chose JoLe because of their menu options. We decided to do the 4 course meal with wine pairings. Their staff knows their stuff. All four wines were paired perfectly with the dishes and they were so knowledgeable about the background of esch individual wine. We had an absolutely wonderful tome and will definitely be returning next time we are up there!
My husband and I ate here the night after we got married, on a brief mini-moon to Calistoga. We were treated like royalty from start to finish, complete with some complimentary bubbly. We both did the 4-item tasting menu, which was the perfect amount of food to compliment the bottle of wine we brought. I am a vegetarian, and the expansive menu and a la carte tasting style was perfect for my needs, while my new husband had plenty of meat choices as well. We both particularly loved the gnocchi, which was cooked to perfection in a beautiful butter sauce.
My wife and I had a fun experience at JoLe during our short stay in Calistoga. We each had a different 4 course tasting menu. To our surprise the portions were large enough that it was really an 8 course menu for us to share. Since the menu changes every day, I will comment on the types of food we had: very fresh salads, veggies well seasoned and done just right, wonderful meats, creative desserts. A highlight was the sommelier varied the wines since my wife likes whites and I like reds. The wines and wine list are much better than the typical California restaurant perhaps because they are picked to go with the types of food prepared (the wines also change weekly). Luis provided explanations, recommendation, and perfect service along with the serving staff.
We made reservations on opentable and were delighted when we walked in and got seated at a quiet table by the window. The food and wine pairings were incredible!! The sommelier explained each course and why he chose the wine to accompany the dish. The 4 of us enjoyed a wonderful dining experience!!
My girlfriend and I chose the 5 course wine pairing dinner. It was the best meal of my life! The service was great! Both the waiter and wine somm were very knowledgable. The wine and quality of food was spot on!! I highly reccamend the wine pairing. Although, it can get a little pricey but definitely well worth it!
Avoid going to this restaurant on a Sunday night. We were seated by a waiter who looked annoyed that he was elected to seat us. Our waiter took our order and then basically forgot about us. We were served bread and water by a bus person and we also ordered cocktails. Neither of us liked our cocktails, and I even returned mine because I couldn't drink it. For the next hour, we had no contact with our waiter. We finished the bread, and were never offered a replenishment. We watched the table next us get their first 2 courses, and all we could do was salivate. I finally flagged down our waiter who apologized and claimed that he got busy serving coffee and forgot to put in our order, but he could get food out to us in 3 minutes. Really? What could they possibly put together in 3 minutes that is worth waiting for and why should I believe him?
We decided to get up and walk out. The food looked good, but we never got to taste it. In an obnoxious move, the restaurant canceled our reservation on open table after we left, which deprives me of the points I deserve for honoring the reservation, and removes my ability to leave negative feedback. Fortunately, after contacting Open Table, it was reinstated. Clearly, management was not present the night we were there (Sunday). It was a sour note to an otherwise perfect day in Napa Valley.
Although our dinner was delicious, our experience here was soured by the poor service. Our server was inattentive and downright rude for no apparent reason. At the end of our meal we mentioned this to the manager and he apologized half-heartedly and wasn't very responsive.
With so many outstanding dining experiences available in Napa Valley, I definitely won't be going back to Jo Le.
My husband and I had dinner here after several recommendations by local people. We each did a four course tasting. The food was good but quite pricey. The glass of wine the waiter brought my husband ended up being $20. It was also very cold in there- to the point that it was affecting my enjoyment of the evening. Service was very nice.
What a coincidence to find the chef from one of my favorite places in Philly! While we were tasting Neal wines the winemaker recommended JoLe. We Love the eclectic menu where you can share your dish for a very nice culinary experience and we did between six of us. We trusted the waiter to recommend pairings with our food selection and he knocked it out of the park - would definitely return to try the remaining dishes
Let's get the bad out of the way first. The worse part of Jole is the noise level and the table spacing. I could hardly hear my girlfriend and had to talk pretty loud. Not a lot of people in the place, but the overall noise level was high. The tables could use a bit more space inbetween them. I felt like I was eating at my neighbors table. There was maybe 24inches between tables. Waiters had to sidestep through.
Now too the good stuff - the food! But first, the drinks. They have a large wine list, this is Calistoga after all, and a rather tasty cocktail list with some creative mixes. Darker & Stormier was rum with ginger and lime. Delicious! The plates are served All-a-carte. You just pick a few dishes and have at it. My girlfriend and I chose three dishes and that was plenty. The dishes are around $20-$30 each. We had ordered 3 plates, and 2 cocktails, and bill was $104. They have individual meal deals where you choose four, five,or,six courses. Four course starts at $55/person. Or you can do the four course with a chef pairing glass of wine for each plate for $90/person.
We ordered the grilled duck breast, backchoy & eggplant, and the lamb stew. The duck breast was our least favorite. Didnt have much flavor, but it was cooked perfectly. The back choy & eggplant totally surprised me. I was expecting much but it was full of flavor. The lamb stew was simply outstanding. I wanted to lick the bowl clean. The sauce was so good!!! I could probably eat that everyday.
All in all, Jole was a nice place. I would definately go back, the food is delicious and fresh, and that is the most important part, isnt it? Definately give it a try if you are in the area.
The way you order is all about you. For example: 4 item choices from the main menu.
There is always more then one thing on a menu that you want to order, at JoLe you can do that and more. Paired with wine $90. On it's own $55. So great, so many choices. Food was great! Wine pairings were great! Sharing was a must. We got to taste almost everything on the menu.
Had a lovely time at JoLe. We went all-out for one of the coursed tasting-style menus with pairings. The wine pairings for some dishes were phenomenal, most were just fine, but they were all well thought out and made sense. My friends are still talking about the grilled octopus, and I imagine they will be for a while. Everything was done very well and was delicious.
We were extremely disappointed after the high recommendations we had received. None of the four of us enjoyed our meals. The sweetbreads were especially awful -- just a hunk of fried batter without any flavor. The desserts were by far superior to the other offerings. We all chose the four-course tasting dinner; there was no flow between any of the courses and things just came at random. The place also was incredibly expensive for the quality and quantity. I would not return and I will not recommend JoLe.
Our third trip to JoLe was even better than the first two, with a much calmer, quieter crowd on a Sunday night. We're hooked on the tasting menu, and once again the kitchen flawlessly delivered around 20 different dishes to us and our friends. The service is professional and friendly.
Great spot for a nice dinner in Calistoga, the octopus and the sweetbreads were especially excellent! Service was great and they were extremely helpful guiding us toward an interesting bottle of wine from the extensive list (divided into old world, new world, and local). Only downside was that we were seated right next to the kitchen, but I would definitely return for another meal at JoLe
