Each dish was a mini-masterpiece. We both loved our appetizers (gnocchi for me, mixed greens for my wife). I don't know how you can make a salad so delicious, but Jo-Le's chef managed it. Of our main dishes, I enjoyed the steak cooked in a delicious thick sauce, while my wife loved the lamb. Jo-Le is quite small, so it's best to make a reservation. It was busy even on the Tuesday night we were there. Our server was great fun, very knowledgeable (she's a cooking school graduate, so she was really helpful), and eager to please. We'd go back to Jo-Le in a heartbeat. The bistro-style ambience was quite nice, but a bit on the loud side.
JoLe is a must eat when in Napa Valley. This is my third visit and each time, the food has been excellent. The tasting menu concept works well to get a variety. Each dish has had a unique twist and was executed perfectly.
My friend ordered 2 items off the main menu and got good sized dishes. I ordered a tasting of 5 items. The gnocchi was absolutely delicious rich and flavorable. The crab was okay, however did not like the spicey aoili sauce very similar to sirrachi. The octopus salad was very good, but could have enhanced the flavors with truffle oil and lemon zest. Unfortunately, the next dish had the same spucey sauce on top of the delicate scallops. I was able to remove most of it and enjoy the scallops. The fois gras was excellent but did not enjoy the bitter greens with it.
James the GM/Wine Director is awesome! Very knowledgeable and listens to what the customer likes. His wine pairing choices were right on the money and made the whole meal special.
the best dinner we've had in calistoga. The wine pairings were also amazing. They really made our meal special and we will be back.
Just went to JoLe for the first time. It was a very busy Friday night but in spite of that the service was great. The chef accommodated my picky vegetarian mate by whipping up an off-menu saute of fresh veggies that was amazingly fresh and flavorful. I had steak that was perfectly prepared and full of great flavor. The plate accompaniments were simple and complemented the meat without overpowering it. The presentation was also refreshing simple, and the portions were human-sized. Eclectic mix of people, with mostly younger folks at the beautiful, well-stocked bar and an older crowd dining. Overall fresh, energetic, and casually elegant. A great add to Napa Valley dining. Oh, and they aren't kidding when the say leave room for dessert. Wow.
We each had the 4-course tasting menu for $55; you get to choose any dishes off of the menu. All of our choices were fabulous, especially the seafood that comes in fresh daily. We were treated with free sparkling wine for our anniversary! Definitely would recommend.
I had been to this restaurant several years ago and remember it being very good. I like small plates, because you can try a little bit of everything. This time there was a tasting option, so that's what we did. To me it was very pricey. I wish we had just ordered several dishes because overall I think we would have been happier. Very nice restaurant. Service was great, food was good. I may or may not go again.
I enjoyed eating here after a day of wine tasting. They are located in the Mountain View Resort and Spa in Calistoga. Great food, service and wine selection. Reasonably priced, will return again.
Very comfortable setting with a modern contemporary flair. Service was exceptional with attention to detail. Description of food elicited savory expectations that were easily met. Every food item on the menu made it very difficult to choose the perfect meal. However, the choices I made were delicious and memorable.
My wife and I went to Jole for dinner based on the online recommendations I'd read. Many sites listed it as the best place to go in Calistoga, which may have built it up a bit because, although good, there was nothing truly remarkable about our experience here.
The place, the food, the service... I really couldn't say there was anything especially wrong with any of it, but let's just say that this place is better than your average restaurant while not as good as many other "new american", farm-to-table restaurants of its kind. Would not go out of my way to eat here again.
The service was wonderful. Sommelier was engaging and knowledgeable. The food was a bit dissappointing. Husband has an allergy to shellfish. Unknown to us the octopus kicked his rear the next day. Perhaps jaded our overall opinion. Sorry we were not pleased with the food experience.
JoLe has changed to a larger plate format with the same gourmet treat from the old days. The prices have risen but are still a great value for the quantity and serving portion size of the food.
Only takes two plates instead of four to make a meal.
My all time favorite place for sweetbreads and my wife's favorite for duck.
For a sisters trip to celebrate a landmark birthday we selected JOLes and were extremely pleased with the atmosphere, professional and accommodating staff, and imaginative and well prepared menu. We had the 4 course tasting menu which was more than adequate overall lthiugh each course is a bit smaller in size . Otherwise we wouldn't be able to eat it all. Outstanding!
My husband and I went to JoLe for a special dinner during our ten year wedding anniversary in Calistoga. We were treated to complimentary glasses of bubbles to kick off our evening which was a nice surprise. Josh was our waiter and he was super helpful in selecting a wonderful mix of things to experience and to pair with the wine we brought. Thanks for a great night!
Had the 5 course wine pairing with the tasting menu, opted to pay the extra $7 each for all savory items. My wife is allergic somewhat to red wines, and they were very accommodating to offer other options without being stuffy. The som (?) was very knowledgeable and down to earth about the wines and their presentation. Food was excellent, nice ambience and low lighting. Will return for the inventive food and beverage menu. Thanks for the fun time!
Great farm to table restaurant. Fresh ingredients and inventful options. Server was attentive, but condescending and rude. Don't believe he meant to be so rude, but was simply bizarre. His answer to what would he recommend? Basically responded that the menu here changes, I he can't answer that. Told me it was my problem that I didn't like dessert my husband was ordering. Just a bizarre experience. Too bad, because flavors were truly delicious.
Awesome 4-course pairing dinner during our stay in Calistoga. They also offer 5 and 6-course menus. If you cannot make up your mind, I think the course menu is the way to go.
The service was great, after so many nights on vacation we were looking for quaint...it was. We were looking for great food and wine selection. ...the wine options were delicious and the food, well we decided to go with the serving option of 3 and 4 each more protein for my guy and a couple for me with a sweet at thw end. It was a nice way to try something new...like sweethearts.
The only negative was that when we asked for olive oil instead of butter for our bread it was BAD. I still want the best EVOO for dipping bread and it seems we are going back to salted butter instead in many restaurants.
My partner and I had an incredible time at Jolē. The squid was amazing! Our server Anna was an absolute joy!
We ate at JoLe on a Monday night while we were visiting Calistoga for a romantic getaway. We definitely were in the mood for a good meal. Boy, we were disappointed! We ordered 4 dishes (2 apps and 2 entrees). 2 were good and 2 were mediocre. The kicker was that the prices were high and the portions small. The appetizers were the beet salad (meh.) and brussell sprout shavings (very good). The entrees were the duck (tough, undercooked and not flavorful) and 4, just 4, sea scallops (tasty). We decided to stay for dessert and were underwhelmed with the flourless chocolate cake. Coffee was delicious, though.
We have been to Jole a couple of times for dessert and they were always amazing. So we decided this last time we would go for dinner. Good reviews and creative menu. We picked tuna, mussels, and quail. The tuna was very well done. The mussels were delicious and had an amazing broth that was wonderful especially to dip bread in! The quail was not my favorite. I have had quail before and like the skin crispy and the quail cooked so that its not pink at the bone. This quail skin and texture was chewy and it was pink at the bone. I only ate one piece because I didn't find it appealing. Then we had coconut pie which again is quite delicious. Light and airy. Mmmmm I would suggest to anyone to try this restaurant. Has lots to offer!
A great place to dine. I felt it was the same caliber of food, service, & attention to detail as what I get in a San Francisco trendy, non-snobby restaurant. This can be a rarity in small towns so I appreciated it, wanted to highlight that detail, & more importantly, no Hipsters were seen. We had a wonderful server with attention to detail. I requested an ice cream substitution for our apple pot pie & he gave us both the ice cream that came with our dessert in addition to my substitution request. The banana caramel ice cream request was soo refreshing & tasty! The bartender was warm, friendly, & made a delicious Kentuckelberry Mule. Mediterranean Octopus was delicious & melted in our mouths! Thank you, Jole!
My husband had 3 main dishes, 2 salad and an octopus dish, and I had the tasting menu of 4 dishes, lamb, quail, venison, and a beet salad.
All dishes were delicious, sophisticated, and the portions more than reasonable. The service was friendly and prompt.
This is obviously a popular place. People of all ages were dining. This restaurant is small with a small bar but there is lots of action. Although the food was excellent, the menu is not universal - the average person may have trouble finding something they like. I thought the service was a bit slow, but again, it's Calistoga. It took too long to get our first drink - to me, that's really important. the waitstaff was very nice.
A few days before our trip to Calistoga, I checked opentable for Jole and there were two time slots available: early dinner or a later dinner. We picked the early time slot and glad we did. It wasn't too busy when we got there but it started filling up. We saw quite a few couples get turned away because they didn't have reservations although the restaurant looked empty. Within 30 minutes, every table was filled.
FOOD: Bread was warm out of the oven which was delicious! I got the duck and my wife got the Halibut. Both dishes were delicious and a good size, but probably not enough to share unless you got an app.
This was our third visit to Jole and, once again, it delivered! Terrific flavors combined with extremely friendly service made my birthday celebration a special one. Highly recommended!
cuisine on par with starred restaurants. our waiter was excellent. the wine steward was charming and knowledgable. we had a cold draft which they helped by turning the fan down for awhile only.
The bussing...replacing silverware and water...was clumsily done for such a great restaurant.
Chic, urban bistro meets wine country casual. Amazing food by Chef/Owner Matt Spector and his wife/partner/pastry chef Sonjia. Opted for the four course tasting menu with generous small plates of pumpkin gnocchi, dayboat scallops, and hangar steak, all creative and thoughtfully prepared dishes. Desserts deserve their good press. Fantastic coconut cream pie and fresh apple tart with house made vanilla ice cream. Wine pairing is a wonderful addition and the recommended wine by the glass was superb as well. Can't say enough except that we look forward to a return visit, especially as the menu changes daily offering new seasonal cuisine.
The perfect place in Calistoga for a 4-5 (including desert and don't pass that up as the owner is a pastry chef) small plate dinner with the option of terrific wine pairing. The staff is on point, the sommelier is well educated yet does not intimidate. A definite repeater.
Of the five dining experiences that we enjoyed while visiting the Napa Valley, JoLe was the best.
Really high quality food and inventive flavors. Our server was knowledgable about wine pairings. I liked that the plates were smaller and you could order a few selections to share. Would definitely recommend.
This restaurant has a couple options when ordering: either a la carte or a set menu with wine pairings. You can choose from 4, 5 or 6 courses including dessert. They are smaller portioned so you get a taste of a good range of their offerings which change rather frequently. We chose the 4 course and even though we were pretty hungry at our 8:45pm reservation, we left full. The wines they selected went very well with all of the dishes. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
We loved our experience at JoLe. The food was great we loved the small plates. The service was excellent.
Very creative food! Knowledgeable, efficient wait staff. Very efficient kitchen.
The chef was willing to accommodate my special dietary needs with an especially tasty set of dishes. I was thrilled with the food and so grateful for the accommodation.
From the moment we per used their menu I was hooked. At first the three$$ on yelp scared us but we decided it would be worth it. Where else could you dine on octopus with chorizo in the same dish or sweet breads wrapped in bacon. The the moment we stepped the service was impeccable but also warm and inviting. Our servers food knowledge made us salivate all the more. Josh who paired the wine with each course was so articulate in explaining what, where, and how about the wine. I am so glad that we chose to dine there and look forward to going again. Also it goes without saying that the food was amazing and unique which my daughter and I loved.
JoLe was amazing from beginning to end. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We highly recommend the tasting menu with the wine pairing. Hardest working som! We loved every morsel. Of note, the fig salad, octopus, braised beef, and of course the amazing coconut cream pie for dessert. I whole heartlessly recommend this restaurant to everyone staying in the valley.
Restaurant recommended by our hotel (Wine Way Inn which was also excellent) and we weren't disappointed. My wife particularly enjoyed her pumpkin starter and I had duck for my main which was superb. We chose good winer and the bill was $300 with the tip. Not cheap but worth it.
Wonderful seasonal food creatively presented in a rehabbed charming building in downtown Calistoga. Would definitely return.
