Johnny's - Roland Park Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant is absolutely lovely. The atmosphere is soft and quiet and the service was truly wonderful. I even tipped the busboy because he is so personable. The food will leave you with a foodgasm, every thing was perfect when the homemade ice cream and sorbet.
We ordered a burger (delish) and the Hanger Steak, medium rare. The latter was very rare (that’s ok), but VERY rubbery/chewy (NOT ok). Let the server know and he offered to toss it back on the grill. Said ok, but although it was more medium rare on the 2nd try, my steak knife still couldn’t make it through this rubbery slab of meat, nor could my teeth. It triggered a gag reflex in me. I let him know I simply could not eat it. He said ok and took it away. He said the chef said sometimes that’s the case with hanger steak. (I beg to differ, as I have ordered it an innumerable amount of times before elsewhere, as I am also in the food industry and I have never had a time when I simply could not eat my steak.) He offered a complimentary dessert. That was nice and all, but a $3.50 cookie doesn’t really make up for the $26 steak that I did not get to eat. Therefore I left still hungry, and $$ in the hole. I love all Foreman-Wolf restaurants and want to believe it was just a fluke, so my review is still middle of the road. But on the other hand, FW is not new to the industry and should have a better solution lined up, such as offering a new entree.
This was our first visit to Johnny's, after having enjoyed all of the other Wolf-Foreman Baltimore restaurants. The place is hip, fun, very cozy (nice, comfortable leather booths), good ambiance. Service was excellent. The food is fantastic! We each had the Cuban sandwich and it was a very unique approach. The sandwich is traditionally "pressed" like a pannin, but here it was a house made "grinder" roll. Excellent. Traditionally, the meat is sliced roasted pork and ham. Here, it was very juicy pulled pork and smoked bacon. House made pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard rounded it out. Best Cuban we've ever had by a wide margin:). The slaw on the side was perfect. We also shared Old Bay chips with a malt vinegar aioli. Wild. We shared drinks and a bottle of chardonnay. For dessert we had the house made banana bread (great) and my wife ate a slice of the house made red velvet cake. She said it was the best she'd ever had. This kitchen is on its game. Our only complaint is a common one with the Wolf-Foreman establishments: very anemic pours of spirits. We drink our whiskeys neat, so this stingy approach to the bar really jumps out. It's the only consistent complaint we have with their restaurants, which otherwise are fabulous.
I took my niece for a birthday lunch date. We both had the crab cakes and Chesapeake fries. This is the first time I've been here and not like my meal....would never get the crab cakes again, my fries were like the fries that yu get at the bottom of the frozen bag and I had a coke and a ginger ale both of which were flat. I've dined here several time but this time it was not good and it was the first time I'd gotten the crab.
Johnny’s has recently revamped their menu and it is fantastic! The restaurant was very busy and even though we had a reservation there was a bit of wait. To thank us for our patience, the hostess sent a complimentary shrimp cocktail to our table. It was a pleasant surprise and much appreciated. For our entrees, my husband had the salmon and I had the rockfish. Both dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. Our server was a very pleasant, considerate young man who was attentive without hovering. We will definitely go back again.
I love Johnny's but something was off the night we visited. The timing of food was off...... entrees coming too soon after appetizers and salads. Wait staff not skilled at placing food on the table.... kind of just reaching out and handing the plate to you at eye level....ordered a glass of wine with our entrée and had to flag someone down to get it after our entrees had been with us for 10 minutes........ empty plates and drink glasses on the table until coffee came. But the food was, as usual, a real treat, atmosphere great. Managers, train your wait staff please. I'll be back.
New restaurant manager has achieved major improvements in quality of service and friendliness of staff. I didn't get her name as she greeted us after our meal, but she has truly raised the bar at Johnny's....well done! The food/DRINKS are a bit pricey, but your inclined to overlook that for in lieu of the professional, friendly and attentive service and ambiance of the restaurant and bar.
I thought it was fine, the food was pretty good but nothing extraordinary, definitely expected more in terms of flavor profiles. The lights over the table were far too low and bright making it almost impossible to easily make eye contact with my partner across the table.
Our server was great.
