Johnny Delmonico's Ratings and Reviews
I like the atmosphere of the restaurant. The steaks are excellent, but you better be prepared to pay the price for them. I tried the halibut the last time I was there and was disappointed--too salty. Should have stuck with their speciality, the bone in tenderloin. Service is always very good. Wine list is excellent.
Service was VERY slow after arriving at 5-30 pm for a pre-theater dinner a 7-30 pm curtain nearby).
This did not appear t o be our server's fault, but a backed up kitchen despite our early arrival.
This inefficiency looked like it was backing up later reservations --- many people were lined up
to get in when we left at 7-35 pm after having gulped down our dinner. Fortunately the Overture Center has WAY better customer service and snuck us in after the curtain.
This was quite disappointing, particularly at the price. There are too many good steakhouses
in Madison for this poor service to work!
I took my wife here for a special birthday dinner - this place has THE greatest Steak in Madison, Bar none. They were told in advanced with reservations about it being her birthday and before I said anything they already had a desert planned. It is expensive for a blue color dude like me, but for what you get it is priced correctly, great server. Also, I am a bit of a Caesar salad officianato and this place had the best dressing I have ever had.
The waiter was very nice and attentive at first but as room started to fill up we had to wait to get his attention, had to wait for desert menu. I wanted to order another cocktail but by the time we got his attention, it was too late and we just wanted to leave. Had to wait for the check too.
We enjoyed the food, it was very tasty as always. Drinks were fantastic as well.
We had to add one person to our party at the last minute (day before dining) and they graciously accommodated our larger party without a problem. The Art Deco environment felt cozy and luxe, and both our actual waiter and the other waitstaff were friendly and very attentive. The food tasted wonderful and I was surprised with a complimentary (and delicious) dessert because we were celebrating my birthday. The only less-than-stellar detail was that three of our five steaks were not prepared precisely how we'd ordered them (medium was closer to medium well). They were high-quality meats, though, so still tasted quite good, though the snafu made the high prices a bit more galling. But we've frequented Delmonico's over the years and will continue to do so because they provide a dining experience that is top-notch overall.
We were attending the Foo Fighters for our 5th wedding anniversary and we were looking forward a return to one of our favorite places to eat in Madison. We needed to leave by 645 so.. on our own time table we were pressed for time. My wife and I have eaten here every time that we come to Madison. That is about 8th time in the 10 years we have been together. This was a bad food experience for us just for the main course.
I will start with the service. It is always high here. I will also note that if not for our concert that we were going to and needing to leave I would have said something directly to our waitress. So admittedly that is on me.
Our salad and my wife's tuna app were good.
The steaks were totally over cooked. I asked for medium and my wife asked for medium well. Both our steaks were much closer to well done. I am stubborn and a guy who paid $49 (I believe that was the cost) for a 10 oz filet. It was over cooked to my liking. My wife barely ate half of her's as she tried to stay away from even to her liking an over cooked steak. If she hadn't ordered Oscar style she would have been hungry for sure.
I know it was hopefully a one time thing but I will think again about dining at Delmonico's on our next trip. There are other places that I know for $200 or less... that I can and always have counted on.
Absolutely perfect in every way. We were a party of two adult couples celebrating a birthday for one and an award for another. Adrienne, the manager, helped me select the perfect table with a bottle of French champagne chilled and waiting for us. David in the bar always makes excellent drinks; and Kerry was, as always, a perfect server. He answered our questions, took excellent care of us, and is always friendly. Three steaks were cooked perfectly. The filet mignon is the best in Madison. I had the chicken and that was one of the best chicken dishes I have ever had. This is a classy restaurant with fine food. Tablecloths! Soft music you can hear! No yelling in each other's ear to be heard!
Thankfully, no kids! Couldn't ask for a better night.
Biggest thing that stuck out in my mind was that while Delmonico's specialty is steaks my date and I each ordered medium rare steaks and mine arrived absolutely red while hers was grey all except for a hint of pink. I didn't have a problem with mine but the degree that they over cooked hers was a real waste.
It was still good food, I don't want to sound ungrateful for any chance to try specialty steaks and great wine, but the caliber of food they are charging for deserves more attention to detail.
Other thing that stuck out was that we ordered wine to go with the steak (well before the steak came) and, even after asking about it, it didn't arrive until we were nearly done.
They were friendly and the atmosphere was nice, but these two things really need to be addressed.
Fantastic meal. Great food and drinks, both had the ribeye...delicious! Apple crumble for dessert, best ever! Greeted and seated by assistant general manager Jeff, very accommodating. Excellent service from our server Cynthia! Have been here several times before and will continue to return!!!
A great experience was had a Johnny Delmonicos this week. From the greeting at the door to the final course, service was friendly and the food was on point. Our first course - raw oysters was a blend of Maine and Canadian oysters that was the perfect start to the evening. The soup, steak and sides were done perfectly. And our waiter, Cary, took fabulous care of us. We definitely felt more like family than diners at the restaurant.
Tenderloin with blue cheese crust never disappoints hash browns just right and the chocolate torte !!!need I say more. My all time favorite for experience and price. Kerry server very enjoyable and takes great care of you. May try other steak places but always return my number one fav!!
I have been to Johnny Delmonico's a number of times and have enjoyed it every time. The dry aged ribeye is awesome, although pretty pricey. (And I live in San Francisco where everything is pricey!) It is consistently one of the best steaks I've had and I have tried many. I've ordered the steak each time but the other entrees look good as well, and my dinner companions enjoyed them. I don't care for the hash browns as a side; They aren't bad, just kind of tasteless. But the other sides I've tried have been good - mac & cheese and asparagus come to mind as good ones. The cocktails are good - I recommend the craft manhattan. The wine list has something for everyone. The atmosphere is nice - quiet enough to have a conversation but not deathly quiet. I'd say it is between quiet and moderate, depending on how busy they are. The tables are also reasonably spaced so you are not right next to someone else and don't feel like they are part of your conversation, or you theirs. All in all, a very nice, comfortable atmosphere. I've also had dinner at the bar. That was enjoyable as well; The bartenders were quite friendly and eating there was quite comfortable. Bottom line: I have eaten at Johnny Delmonico's almost every time I have visited Madison, and I look forward to it each time. I went to Rare once and that was a mistake, on a number of levels. If you like steak, Johnny Delmonico's is the place to go in Madison.
The food, the service and the ambiance were all wonderful. Our waiter was attentive with out being intrusive. Together with the food this made for a wonderful evening celebration of our 35th wedding anniversary. There was a large crowd in the event room but the noise level in the main dining area was minimal. A definite positive for us. We will be back and highly recommend to all.
Was very disappointed with the meal. Our steaks were tough and I left a large portion of gristle and sinew. The mashed potatoes were luke warm at best. Sent an email to the manager 2 days ago to advise of our disappointment and have not heard a word. Not at all what I expected.
As always we had great service and a great experience, with one caveat. Two of the group ordered steaks and they were pretty well overcooked. we asked for medium and they were at least medium well if not well done. In retrospect I would suggest sticking with medium rare instead, since they seemed to overcook. Beyond that however the food was wonderful and I would highly recommend Johnny D's.
