John Bentley's - Redwood City Ratings and Reviews
John continually and consistently serves great food be it at lunch for a business meal or a fun dinner out for a fine experience in a classy, casual setting. The hazelnut crusted goat cheese salad and the salmon entree are a perfect bright, light, and delicious lunch every time. Bravo.
We tried John Bentley for the first time on the spur of the moment. It is a cozy space with A+ service. Some of the food was imaginative and tasty - check out the crab, avacado and watermelon starter. But, sadly, the special veal chop, though thick and impressive-looking lacked flavor and was tough. Perhaps we did a bad job ordering but at this point we are not inclined to return.
We were celebrating the birthday of a couple who both turned 80 and were taking them out. In that atmosphere we didn't want to ask how much the specials were and they don't automatically tell you when they describe them. The specials were very good, but higher priced than I expected. We're sorry the restaurant is closing and we will miss it.
I loved the fresh flavor combinations. On different nights, I had the grilled watermelon salad and the asparagus soup; the panko-crusted cod; and the marinated figs and the grilled salmon. I truly enjoyed every dish. The service is impeccable and the staff are very friendly and clearly care about your dining experience. I sampled the desserts, too: the blackberry crisp with cinnamon gelato is like summer in a dish. The apple tart is incredibly light and delicious, and the seasonal sorbets (I had blackberry and pineapple) are refreshing and tasty. My favorite dish of all that I tried is the watermelon salad, which is two slices of (barely) grilled watermelon sandwiching avocado and fresh crab, topped with shredded deviled jicama. I recommend John Bentley's to anyone who is looking for something fresh, unexpected, and marvelous.
The food is consistently good. The hanger steak I had was cooked perfectly medium as I requested. My wife ordered the sea bass special and truly enjoyed it. The apple tart made with puff pastry and topped with ice cream was a big hit.
It's a little hard to spot from the road, but worth the effort.
Went in for a business dinner with two other people
The ruby rye cocktail was water down and bland
The bass was small and poorly prepared
The watermelon crab thing he was barely there and a very poor quality
Great ambience, vibe, crowd, Chris white tablecloth's quiet diners I wish the food was better
Not coming back
John Bentley is consistently the best restaurant on the peninsula. It is the only restaurant in the area where I can look at the menu and honestly say I would be happy with anything listed there.
John himself is very much in charge and it shows in every detail. He and his restaurant are treasures to be appreciated by all who go there.
We were seated in the back room with three parties of 8 and 10 each. They were extremely noisy and it was most unpleasant. Finally our waiter suggested that we move to the bar to finish our dinner. And they did comp our dessert. But don't ever let them put you back there.
This was my second visit to the restaurant. We were staying at SFO for an early flight back home the next day. I was there about a
Month ago on business and was anxious to return. Service was excellent and the atmosphere is warm and cozy.
Two of us had the sea bass special but wish we had ordered the Panko pork chop which someone else had and raved about. The sea bass was a bit dry as if had been cooked earlier yet still good.
We shared four different desserts and all of them hit the spot.
I will return next time I'm in SF and don't want to fight the traffic into the city.
The food and service at John Bentley' were excellent as always. However, the high noise level made it very difficult to enjoy a quiet anniversary dinner. I do realize that this is something the managment doesn't have much control over. The problem seems to be that people no longer respect the quiet ambience of a fine dining establishment. They, especially business diners, conduct loud conversations, sometimes nearly shouting, with little regard to the comfort of others nearby. Perhaps a reminder could be posted for diners to try to keep the noise level down as a courtesy to others in the restaurant who are trying to enjoy a quite meal and have a conversation without raised voices. Unfortunately, it seems to be the trend these days for folks to be oblivious to the needs of others (for example carrying on loud cell phone conversations in public).
Dining at Bentleys is always a pleasure. The menu has a nice variety of entrees that are made from fresh local ingredients and are perfectly prepared. The ambience in the restaurant is so soothing and relaxing. The perfect place for a special lunch or dinner.
The food was pretty good, but the ambiance and service left a little to be desired. Our server was clearly stretched thin and was running around nonstop, so we didn't get the attention that I would expect from this type of restaurant. The restaurant was also very loud, so I wouldn't recommend this place if you want something a little more intimate. The food was good, but I don't think I'll be returning. There are plenty of restaurants with this caliber food with better ambiance & service.
The ambience was very noise, with a very loud TV on the background. Even after the bar had no clients, the staff was loud and kept talking and laughing loudly while cleaning and making a lot of noise with plates and glasses. The experience was very disappointing.
JBs is one of my favorite restaurants. The food is always high quality and delicious. John always comes out of the kitchen to greet his guests and treat you like family. They don't tinker around with the menu like lots of established places do so you can always count on having your favorite. Same goes for the desserts. Perfect place to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries or anything else!
We are always completely satisfied with our visit to John Bentley's. Everything about this place is excellent. The food is unbelievable and the service is outstanding. It's a little dark inside the restaurant but once you are there for a little bit you get used to it. We love this place!
Overall experience was excellent. John Bentley's dishes were satisfying and prepared with great attention to detail. The waiter knew everything I was about to request and provided it instantly without my uttering a word! This is probably one of the best restaurants on the peninsula.
Drinks: Mango Margarita perfectly prepared and rich flavor of fresh mango, great choice for Cinco de Mayo.
Appetizer List was so delicious I enjoyed two appetizers instead of a main dish. The fresh dugeness crab Neapolitan with watermelon was refreshing and flavorful. The beet "ravioli" with a mushroom stuffing was colorful, and layered in complimentary flavors.
Main dish: (my son's impression) The "legdendary pork chop" did not disappoint. Savory crust and cooked to perfection to maintain flavor and juciyness.
Like other recent reviewers, my husband and I also found both the food and the service impeccable. Our server, Bill, was there when we wanted him and discreetly out of sight otherwise; service was prompt but we never felt rushed. Truly professional. The food was also a delight, especially the "ravioli" appetizer, the salmon and the house-specialty bread pudding. The only food item we had that could have been slightly better prepared was arguably the appetizer special of Maryland softshell crab. The batter was a little heavy, but I still ate it all! We feel we've found a new (new to us) Bay Area gem.
