Some dishes that should have been warm were cold on the inside, the chili relleno and the filet. Everything was flavorful however. The bar is lively and happy hour is a good deal. However the servers at the restaurant seemed bitter that they aren't allowed to try the food and they should be allowed to. That way they can recommend things to their customers.
We had two evening meals during our stay next door at The Vintners Inn--one special meal in the main restaurant, one casual meal in the bar area. Both were wonderful, and for different reasons. The special meal stood out for the lovely dining room, cozy table, GREAT service, and delicious meals. I had the very reasonably priced chef's tasting--for $68 it included a delicious tuna tartare appetizer, butternut squash soup, a full halibut entree, and a walnut tart dessert. The next night (after a late lunch) we stopped in to the lounge part of the bar (not as busy as the bar) and I LOVED the happy hour priced fish tacos. My husband loved the egg roll like Mexican app with black beans and chicken. The restaurant and bar are lively, popular and really nice to have on premises if you are staying at the Inn. The outdoor seating looked fun too--with heaters and white lights.
There was a big line of people checking to see if they could be seated. There was no separate line for people with reservations. We had to wait for about 15 minutes in this line in order to be seated. It was then about 15 more minutes before we saw our server. Consequenlty we only ordered a main course because we had concert tickets and did not have time to have a first course or dessert which was disappointing. It’s a beautiful place with great acoustics and lighting and the food we had was very nice.
We went for thanksgiving with a reservation for two. We were sat in a table in the hallway. Service was sparse. Food was not fresh. Meat was under seasoned. Used to be a place we always went for special occasions multiple times a year. Probably won’t go back here ever again.
Everything was perfect EXCEPT for our check-in not being very welcoming. The man behind the desk couldn't locate our Open Table reservation, despite the fact that I had been called the day before by a lady at the restaurant to confirm. Finally, we were seated at the table our friends were already at. The short snafu was no big deal but did take time out of our dining experience.
Everything was fantastic with one exception. We arrived early to have a drink in the bar area. After being seated in the bar we waited about 15 minutes and no one ever came over to our table so we moved to seats at the bar and even then the bartender seemed to be so busy he barely even made eye contact with us. Otherwise everyone was very accommodating and friendly. Would definitely go back!
We have been to John Ash countless times and it never disappoints. In our opinion, it is far and away the best restaurant in Sonoma County.
The menu is always varied, the ingredients fresh and local and the dishes are incomparable. Chef Tom Schmidt is a Master. We try to go there every 4-6 weeks and always on special occasions.
We went to Ferrari-Carano winery prior to dinner for a wine tasting. The winery notified us that we could purchase bottles of wine at the winery, and have them opened at dinner at John Ash & Co. We did this since there was no cork fee; however, only to be treated rudely by our waiter when we mentioned opening our wine from the winery. Ended up just buying drinks since he was so awkward about it. Got the dining experience off to a weird start. Then, one of our guests cut their finger on the back of the chair because sharp staples were sticking out of the upholstery. Someone came over and said, "I comped your last drink", which was laughable as he tried to stop the bleeding. The food was very mediocre. I don't like to complain, but won't be going back to John Ash & Co.
Oh, so much to say. My husband and I went out Wednesday night for a date night dinner to beautiful John Ash, and left with only one of us eating dinner. Why? Because my $46.00 Medium Rare Filet Mignon arrived not only well done but too dry to swallow. They kindly took it back while my hubby ate his meager portion of Sea Bass. My steak never returned. I was assumed it would then offered corn soup to hold me over (because my husband was now 3/4 through his meal and there was no estimate of arrival time. Finally I cancelled my order deciding, its no fun to eat alone, and assuming if it took that long to cook my steak it was probably well done again. The Manager offered his regrets and offered to buy us desert but I wanted to go home, and he offered to pay for our drinks (1 cocktail out of 2 were removed from our bill). He strongly suggested 'Next time we come to make sure we included his name in the reservation so he could take care of us'. No thank you. Comping our meal would have helped because it was NOT a nice evening out, or offering a gift certificate, or both? Wrote an email too.. no response. Very disappointed.
Received a nice call from The Restaurant Manager at John Ash, apologizing and sending a gift card. This feels much better, and we will give The Restaurant another try!
