John Ash & Co. Ratings and Reviews
Everything was perfect EXCEPT for our check-in not being very welcoming. The man behind the desk couldn't locate our Open Table reservation, despite the fact that I had been called the day before by a lady at the restaurant to confirm. Finally, we were seated at the table our friends were already at. The short snafu was no big deal but did take time out of our dining experience.
Everything was fantastic with one exception. We arrived early to have a drink in the bar area. After being seated in the bar we waited about 15 minutes and no one ever came over to our table so we moved to seats at the bar and even then the bartender seemed to be so busy he barely even made eye contact with us. Otherwise everyone was very accommodating and friendly. Would definitely go back!
We have been to John Ash countless times and it never disappoints. In our opinion, it is far and away the best restaurant in Sonoma County.
The menu is always varied, the ingredients fresh and local and the dishes are incomparable. Chef Tom Schmidt is a Master. We try to go there every 4-6 weeks and always on special occasions.
We went to Ferrari-Carano winery prior to dinner for a wine tasting. The winery notified us that we could purchase bottles of wine at the winery, and have them opened at dinner at John Ash & Co. We did this since there was no cork fee; however, only to be treated rudely by our waiter when we mentioned opening our wine from the winery. Ended up just buying drinks since he was so awkward about it. Got the dining experience off to a weird start. Then, one of our guests cut their finger on the back of the chair because sharp staples were sticking out of the upholstery. Someone came over and said, "I comped your last drink", which was laughable as he tried to stop the bleeding. The food was very mediocre. I don't like to complain, but won't be going back to John Ash & Co.
Oh, so much to say. My husband and I went out Wednesday night for a date night dinner to beautiful John Ash, and left with only one of us eating dinner. Why? Because my $46.00 Medium Rare Filet Mignon arrived not only well done but too dry to swallow. They kindly took it back while my hubby ate his meager portion of Sea Bass. My steak never returned. I was assumed it would then offered corn soup to hold me over (because my husband was now 3/4 through his meal and there was no estimate of arrival time. Finally I cancelled my order deciding, its no fun to eat alone, and assuming if it took that long to cook my steak it was probably well done again. The Manager offered his regrets and offered to buy us desert but I wanted to go home, and he offered to pay for our drinks (1 cocktail out of 2 were removed from our bill). He strongly suggested 'Next time we come to make sure we included his name in the reservation so he could take care of us'. No thank you. Comping our meal would have helped because it was NOT a nice evening out, or offering a gift certificate, or both? Wrote an email too.. no response. Very disappointed.
Received a nice call from The Restaurant Manager at John Ash, apologizing and sending a gift card. This feels much better, and we will give The Restaurant another try!
We were 2 couples celebrating our anniversaries' dinner. Thanks to our being seated in the main dining room next to a large, obnoxiously rowdy group of 15 to 18 diners, celebrating a birthday, any hope of our being able to enjoy a special fine dining experience threw out the window.
At one point, the manager assured us that the party was about to be served their dinners so they should be quieting down. However, they only seemed to get louder. The topper was when their birthday cake arrived and one of their numbers gave a series of piercingly loud finger whistles.
We asked to be moved and were re-seated behind another party of 4 also chased out of the main dining room and placed in the elevated dining room section. But none of us were far enough from this boisterous party being obnoxiously loud and disruptive.
Bottom line: management should've isolated this birthday party, not seated them in the center of the main dining room.
Upon leaving, our nephew telephoned to complain and was told it was a situation beyond management's control.
My husband and I were visiting Santa Rosa and had reservations to dine at John Ash & Co. We had a wonderful experience! The facility is beautiful, we were seated on the enclosed patio - which was a bit quieter than the dining room, our waiter, Steve, was very professional yet friendly and personable. The wine list is large and filled with fantastic selections, everything on the menu was tempting ~ we had fresh oysters, a delicious Fig & arugula salad, my husband enjoyed every bite of his bone-in Veal rib eye and I LOVED the salmon. We shared a decadent chocolate dessert and were presented with a pair of amazing chocolate truffles, courtesy of the chef. Will definitely visit again!!
Disappointed, John Ash didn't live up to it's reviews. Beautiful looking restaurant, we were seated promptly, and our drink order came in a reasonable period of time. The dinner and wait service was surprisingly average. This is a restaurant that you would take your parents or grandparents. The food was a bit heavy and the New York Steaks were overdone, tough and unspectacular. (a rare New York shouldn't be hard to cut and chew). Desert orders were mixed up, some never showed. We had to flag down the waiter multiple times. We won't be back.
On a whim my adult daughter and I decided to have an early dinner at John Ash on Labor Day. We were seated in a light and airy room overlooking a small garden. My salad with tomatoes was full of the flavors of summer. Then I enjoyed lamb done three ways which was a winner. Both the cheese plate and the charcuterie board were good choices for my daughter.
Chef was very gracious. Wanted to order the tasting menu but make a substitute for the main course.
Not normally done but the chef agreed.
The food and wine parings were wonderful and generous.
Great bread also.
Service was top notch as one would expect in fine dining establishment.
We were in from out of state for my birthday...the restaurant was way too warm and the food was salty. Salty to the point that I feared they were trying to cover up bad scallops and I didn't want to eat anymore which was Ok Since the fish was overcooked and super dry. Staff came and took our salt and pepper shakers from the table at the end of the meal to place them on another (empty) table they were prepping. We just thought it was odd (you don't have extra sets to cover all the tables?) and was one more set of busy hands in our faces interrupting our conversation. The bottle of white wine we ordered was simply placed on the table where we would have preferred an attempt to keep it chilled especially with how warm the restaurant was. They didn't charge us for the wine which we brought to their attention and the waitress quickly rushed the check away and barely thanked us for fessing up to not having been charged $55...she completely reversed all charges on my card and re charged the entire meal with wine to my BF vs just charging the wine to the new card. Somewhat fine but now he ended up covering the entire meal when the trip was my treat. She just said, Oh and didn't offer to correct it and then we never saw her again. No thanks...have a good night... everyone seemed to be in a rush which I didn't understand because we had a later reservation and the restaurant wasn't that busy. I'm sure I could go on. Just an unfortunately ODD experience overall for $200.
This was four weekly date-night. We know the food and ambience will always be great. Our server, Patty was the consummate attendant. She knew how often to check with us without erring on either side of being too rare or too much. She also had an excellent, and sweet disposition.
The menu could be expanded a bit a bit and the price for the dinner was moderate to high but good value. Well, of course, be back
What an amazing evening evening! the four of us were seated at the beautiful terrace facing the vineyards... does not get any better for a view! The service and the food were outstanding - we spend 3 hours enjoying the ambiance, food and the opportunity to visit with friends. The service was respectful of our needs throughout the evening. They have a very impressive wine list with incredible selection of local Sonoma County wines.
