Pretty room. Friendly service. Quality food. Beautiful vineyard views. A worthy stop.
Enjoyed sitting on the patio with the heat lamps, and enjoyed great food and service. It felt like we were the only ones there.
We were there for the Sonoma Restaurant Week menu, and it was an excellent meal overall. The menu offered solid choices. I almost never order dessert, but that turned out to be the best part of the meal. Service was friendly and the room was elegant and lovely.
Each year, when we vacation in Sonoma, we dine at John Ash. Typically, its a wonderful dinner. This year, however, we were sadly disappointed. The salads were fine, although splitting one would have given us both enough. Unfortunately, our server told us they were small. The entrees were where it all fell apart. We both love lamb, and a lamb trio was on the menu. Although we almost never order the same thing, that night we did. Big mistake. The lamb sausage had little flavor and the texture was so fine that it tasted more like a mousse than a sausage. Oh, and it was cold. Some lamb chopped in small pieces was mounded on the plate. The seasoning was odd and the flavor was not at all appealing with the lamb. We ordered the lamb chop rare to medium rare; it was blue and cold. We did, however, like the Israeli couscous! Why didn't we complain; we never saw our server again. Others came sporadically to the table, but not our server. We noticed that she did hover over patrons who ordered wine, but since we had been wine tasting during the afternoon, we weren't interested in more wine. This really was a miserable evening, and I almost never write a bad review.
Everything was wonderful, from the service to our table and the food was exquisite! We love dining here and highly recommend this always consistent restaurant.
We went to John Ash for dinner on a Saturday evening with a group of 9 people after a long day of wine tasting and to celebrate a birthday. We did have reservations well in advance. We were seated almost immediately at an ideal table next to the fire place. Jon was our waiter and he did an an outstanding job. We brought our own wine to the dinner and he decanted the older wine right away. The service overall and the food were great.! We would definitely go there again.
First time at John Ash. We were given a gift certificate for Christmas so we wanted to check it out. We had a couple meet us there that are real bay area foodies. We all loved the ambiance, the appetizers we ordered were outstanding, wine/champagne choices excellent. Service all around was very good. Dessert was outstanding too. The only problem all four of us had was our entrees were actually not as good as we expected, especially considering they followed the outstanding appetizers and salad. I ordered duck confit, and maybe I just don't know what duck confit is supposed to be, but it was not that pleasurable to eat. The other three diners were not super impressed with main course either. I would give this place another try though for sure. We stayed next door at Vinter's Inn which was wonderful and nice to be able to just walk to and from dinner.
We celebrated during restaurant week- a wonderful value at this gem of a restaurant. Just wish they were open for lunch and week-end brunch!
It has been several years, when I say several I mean it, since I had experienced John Ash. What a mistake I had made by not coming back sooner. My brother and I went to John Ash, last night we were able to spend time together before he departed back to So CA.This was our last stop during Sonoma County Restaurant Week. We had been to several other purveyors during that week. What a treat. Shame on me, I had forgotten the caliber of everything that is John Ash!!
To me, it was the highlight of my week dinning around Sonoma County.
Excellent prefixe menu, atmosphere and service. Delicious wines to boot
I've been to John Ash 7 or 8 times over the last 15 yrs & this time was a disappointment. We were there for Restaurant Week. The bread & the dessert were good. The main course, short ribs, were luke warm and mediocre, lacking any kind of interesting sauce or complements, other than the mashed potatoes that accompanied it.
If John Ash were served this dish, he probably would have sent it back.
The wait staff disappeared after serving us dessert and the bill. We finally found someone at the front desk to pay. We were splitting the bill between two credit cards, and gave them clear instructions on how to split it. Unfortunately, they did it the reverse of our request. I don't know what's happened there, but it did not measure up to the good times & great food I've had there before.
For our Anniversary, we decided to come to John Ash & Co., as neither of us had been before.
We started with the oysters and calamari, SO DELICIOUS. That’s our main starter pretty much anywhere we go & the taste and quantity definitely came in number 1 for us.
We both enjoyed our mains, and were pretty impressed with the digital wine & cocktail list.
Overall such a great location, beautiful indoor and outdoor setting, great service, and perfect food.
They finished our evening with 2 complimentary desserts and they were fabulous! Thank you John Ash & Co. for making our night one to remember.
Always s positive experience. Great service , food, and ambiance.
Really great. The service was implacable. We tried two different starters (soup and a salad) and two entrees. All four were very good. The dessert - a blood orange mousse thing- was dream worthy. Super friendly staff. All around lovely evening.
It was restaurant week, so perhaps our experience was an anomaly.
Pros: lovely staff, good food
Cons: service was very slow, our appetizers arrived before our drinks, drinks took a total of 25 minutes to arrive, could hardly taste the alcohol in them, dinner and as Lüke warm at best, wine was not the same vintage as listed on the wine menu (unacceptable in Washington be country) and it was cold on the “heated” enclosed patio.
Our first time there. We will be back soon. I loved the chili relleynos.
John Ash and we are longtime friends. Food always excellent as is friendliness and service. A classy place for any occasion.
We attended during Sonoma County's "Restaurant Week" and had excellent meals. The potato leek soup was particularly great (and I'm not a great fan of soups, but I decided to live out on the edge). Another note about John Ash is its ongoing happy hours, daily except Sundays. The drinks are great and the food selections are good.
We had a party of 8 and everyone enjoyed their meal, the ambience and the service. We have been there before and had a great meal - that is why we went back. They also have a gluten free menu and everything was great. So nice to have GF crackers when everyone is served bread. You feel like part of the group. I would definitely recommend the dinner and Steve was a fabulous server!
Meal was very average. My wife's fillet was overly charred, leaving a bitter taste. They tried to mask with a very bland sauce. My veal rib eye was of poor quality, very gristlely and once again over charred on one side and lacking color on the other. We expected more for the price.
We are locals in Sonoma County and come to John Ash for special occasions. Every time we are always satisfied by the great service, fabulous food and wonderful ambience.
We just came here this evening and didn’t realize it was restaurant week, but were still quite pleased with the menu we ordered. I had a kale salad to start, followed by the short ribs, and then the most decadent chocolate dessert - plus they give you small amuse bouches throughout the mea. Our server were extremely helpful and attentive. We were there on a date night, and will definitely go back again!
Seinfeld show at Luther Burbank!
We have dined here many times and recommended it. This time was a major disappointment. Horrible service and mediocre food. Loud table next to us discussing blood and gore. We won’t be coming back again any time soon.
Another stellar experience at John Ash & Co. Menu is creative and fresh; combining lots of flavors to make great entrees for anyone’s tastes. Service is top-notch, and we enjoy Alans knowledge of the creative foods and wines; his friendly but never intrusive style of serving each table. He makes our dining experience feel personal and fun.
I have fined here many times over the years. Always delicious food, staff personable, efficient and no negatives ever!!!!
This is why we continue to enjoy your hospitality! We took one of our grandsons here at age 21! He was very impressed, and now knows what fine dining experience is available in his home town of Santa Rosa!
The one gluten free vegan entree was okay. The delicata skin was charred and it was somewhat over-cooked. The dish had a good flavor, but it was dry. It would be nice if there was more than one gluten free vegan option.
Hard tp believe there was ever a Michelin star awarded to this place. Basic rules for bussing and waiting on tables were ignored or completely unknown to the young staff. Bussboys would take dirty plates from one table to another, reaching across the tables to remove more dirty dishes. A waitress who was very inexperienced with proper table service, i.e.; taking a cocktail/drink order before taking our dinner order. Just really poor service in the restaurant. The bartender was very professionall, experienced, and knowledgeable.
I'm always shocked by the bill but we keep coming back, there must be a good reason.
Good place to dine before a performance at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts
What a fantastic meal and service!
Absolutely fantastic experience. My husband and I enjoyed cocktails in the bar during happy hour, and then had dinner. Both of us ordered the Chef's tasting menu, he chose the Halibut and I chose the steak, and I couldn't tell you which was better! Our service was exceptional from start to finish. A big thank you to Christopher at the front desk for giving us a cozy booth away from everyone to enjoy our first date night out in quite awhile! We will be back!
Great food and service. Wine waiter was excellent and found us a reasonably priced wine that exactly fitted the description we had given him.
Waiter was patient and gave us plenty of time between courses. Food came perfectly prepared and had not been sitting waiting.
Scallops were sensational. Veal excellent. Perfect for a special event.
John Ash & Co. is all about the ambiance. The interior design just oozes elegance, and the staff fits right in with their attire and level of service. Outside, you have a view of vineyards, of course--this is Wine Country. The food is presented with the same artistic flair as the interior design, and is quite good. The menu is not extensive but offers some nice, if pricey choices. The same could be said of the wine list--excellent, but a little more limited than what I would have expected given the locale. I assume that if you are reading this, you are the type of diner who knows going in that this is high-end dining, and you will not be surprised when you get the check. I wish that I could say that my experience justified the expense.
My wife really liked her starter salad, and my roast beet salad (one of my favorites) was very good, not the best I've had, but definitely impressive. She loved her sea bass. I wish I could say the same about my bucatini (pasta) with dungeness crab. I don't mean to imply that it was not good--it showed definite skill, inspired choice of ingredients, and prefect preparation. However, when I order a dish with dungeness crab in it, I am looking forward to the flavor of the crab complimented by the other ingredients in the dish. There was a wonderful blend of flavors in the first few bites, and then it all became overpowered by the spiciness of the dish. I really like spicy food, but not when 90% of the dining experience is cayenne applied by the shovelful rather than judiciously. What a shame. Otherwise, it was a splendid meal, and I cannot fault the overall experience. From my wife's point of view, everything was perfection, done with exquisite style and class.
Slow service fish one piece over done an small portion. 2 hundred dollars with tip. Not worth it
Aside from our gas heater going out and my feet were freezing, and some sarcastic comments made by our server, everything else was perfect. Plus, no one could get the gas heater turned back on. Wait time to be greeted was a bit long; nevertheless, I will be returning.
Our spot was quite noisy when we first arrived; otherwise the ambiance would have been 5 stars instead of 4. Overall this remains a great place for dinner. The food was, as usual, outstanding.
The restaurant was beautiful as always. Lively ambiance. Service was prompt but not overbearing.
Our dining experience rocked! We arrived a bit early so we’re seated in bar area. Noted very casual attire from wine tasting patrons. Bar orders took 15 min. for delivery, but enjoyed well crafted cocktail and wine suggestions were great.
Dining room was so comfortably appointed with cozy fire place blazing. Service was excellent. Food so good!
Loved lobster “escargot style” appetizer, sea bass, and lamb trio. Experience was refined but really fun.
