My short rib meal was very bland and the portion was child sized. I was very disappointed and won’t be dining there again. It’s unfortunate because the restaurant is only ten minutes away.
Parents were in town for the first time since the pandemic started and we wanted to go some place nice for dinner. Our waiter was so kind and friendly and the food was spectacular. Perfectly cooked and portioned.
It took 10 minutes total to be greeted and brought water. "Hello, may I get you started with any drinks" was our greeting, again without water at the table. It took nearly 15 minutes after ordering cocktails and a bottle of wine for the bottle to arrive, and the inexperienced waiter grabbed the glasses in her hand to pour after making the loudest pop possible with the cork. Two guests still enjoying their cocktails were nearly served full flutes, until I told the waiter to stop. You fill a flute for BY THE GLASS. When people order a bottle you fill the glass LESS THAN HALFWAY. When people are enjoying cocktails, YOUR POUR THEM A TINY SPLASH, OR NONE, OR GOD FORBID YOU ASK THEM IF THEY'D LIKE TO BE POURED RIGHT AWAY.
We had to ask for water refills after setting my empty glass at the edge of the table for over 10 minutes. My bottle of wine nearly filled itself with water as the icebucket we didn't request was filled too high with water, rather THAN JUST A SCOOP OF ICE LIKE IT SHOULD BE. The waiter didn't refill our wine herself once during the meal, not that she would have been capable of it, since she couldn't even handle pouring people a serving without grabbing the glass off the table and tilting it like a beer. Just ing pour it in the glass, good god. It foams, you walk to the next person. I don't need a full glass of wine after ordering a bottle, do you want people to look like alcoholics? Yes, pour out the entire bottle while I have a full cocktail rendering the icebucket you brought meaningless, since my wine is now sitting there in a glass getting warm.
The rollups here have two forks and knives. We had two rounds of appetizers and while still eating the first ones, were brought a new round of rollups, knapkins and all, when no one needed more silverware. If we needed more silverware, then you bring it on a makring tray after our second round of apps, and before the entrees arrive. Way to waste four napkins and 16 pieces of silverware. Use your brain.
Beautiful scenery with the roses blooming outback. We both had the lamb chops which were excellent. The sides which were some type of bean and greens were OK. Very busy for Mother's Day but the service was good.
We've been to John Ash many times and it's always enjoyable. Nice to be back
1.5 hours to get our food and it was not worth the wait. Not very good. Maybe it was an off day for them because the food pre-pandemic was great. It was Mother’s Day so perhaps it was related to being overly busy.
Mother's Day brunch. Food was not as good as expected...but we've never dined in Santa Rosa before so wasn't sure what to expect. Service was okay, but nothing to write home about. Everyone was cordial but it really didn't stand out. My son kept equating the ambiance with the Olive Garden, which I chuckled at...and then I saw the resemblance.
No greeting when we arrived and left. Not very customer friendly by the staff.
the brunch selections were well prepared and ample, the service was courteous and attentive.
Beautiful garden setting, and wonderful service. The food and bellinis were absolutely delicious.
Excellent dining experience on Mother's Day...But the Irish Coffee was disappointing with a very low amount of whisky and small amount of whipped cream...COMPARED to Easter Sunday's Excellent dining experience where the Irish Coffee's tasted great with sufficient whisky and a good "head" of whipped cream. We come to John Ash because of the great food and ambiance. The Bartenders just need to be consistently good on their mixed drinks, especially their Irish Coffees. We look forward to this improved consistency on our next visit! Highly Recommend John Ash & Co. Jerry
Always a solid bet for great food, service and ambiance.
Looking forward to our next visit!
It was the best place, after a CoVid year, to have a reunion with friends and a return to John Ash. The Short ribs were perfect as was the Sea Bass. The endive salad was a great way to start along with oysters and calamari. Our server, Allen, was everything an excellent server should be. It was an amazing way to spend a 50th Anniversary together with good friends.
John Ash never disappoints on all levels! The vineyard setting is like you are sitting in the vineyard, the ambiance inside is like being in a Tuscany villa, service is very friendly and attentive and and the food is exquisitely prepared and presented.....we devoured every bite!
Josh, did an excellent job of servicing his customers. Food was excellent and the view of the flowers and vineyard was divine. Our first venture out in the pandemic environment and we felt very safe. A lovely experience!👍
Soggy calamari rings, oysters on the half shell were warm
Chilean Sea Bass was NOT Chilean.
Cappuccinos were weak.
Cocktails were very good
It was just ok. Certainly not worth the hype. The food was good but it should be at this level. Nothing blew me out of the water, I’ve had a better fillet & prawns that were better cooked and seasoned elsewhere. I don’t have a single complaint, but I’m not seeing a reason to return.
Wonderful service with just the right amount of attention from our waiter. The menu is interesting with items we wouldn’t make at home, so we enjoyed the pheasant, osso bucco, braciole and brick chicken. It was a nice anniversary/birthday evening with our friends. We will definitely go again.
Great atmosphere. Lovely garden views, great food, great wine. Our waiter was great, we never felt rushed at all even though restaurant was busy and full. Just an overall great experience !
We have been coming to john Ash since the 70swhen we came up from San Jose on weekends . It is truly a 5-Star! We look forward to dinner here, sometimes with friends, sometimes by our selves , for birthdays, anniversaries, and whatever. It is always good food, and exceptional service. We tell all our friends at Varenna!
A very comfortable and enjoyable evening, friendly knowledgeable service, delicious but somewhat simple food preparations. Given all the COVID protocols and limitations a pleasant and safe getaway for a special evening.
We haven't been to John Ash in more than a couple of years, and my wife has been wanting to go back. Four of us celebrating a birthday. Sat outside in the covered area. We had a 7:15 reservation and were seated early without fuss, and ordered cocktails. Pot stickers and calamari as appetizers were served quickly and were perfectly prepared. Followed with main courses. I had the diver scallops, which had a yummy yam/onion puree, which I greatly enjoyed. We shared a bottle of Hartford Court RRV Pinot Noir 2019 which, at $72, was reasonably priced. Dessert followed, and no one was disappointed. You can never go wrong choosing to eat here - the food is well-prepared and delicious, the service attentive and corrrect, but not overly precious. Prices are appropriate for what you get. Highly recommended.
We had two martinis in the bar to start off our birthday celebration. Tables were socially distanced and there was no one else in the bar at this time. We then headed to a fantastic table immediately overlooking a vineyard next door to restaurant! Was incredibly beautiful and unexpected. Our server was very good with some great recommendations. The olive encrusted prawn cocktail appetizer was really very good ! The veal osso bucco was very tender and flavorful as was my Portobello Wellington ! Our side of mashed potatoes was delicious!
As one would expect with a restaurant in California wine county the wine list has a mostly Sonoma county focus with an occasional Napa and a few French wines. As a Pinot Noir fan we were struck for the near absence of Oregon Pinots. We find it difficult to get good food/wine pairings with California wines being mostly on the heavy side.
Good food for meat eaters. Vegetarian options are blend and average tasting.
Great food. Servers seem to be new and inexperienced. Served wine without having someone taste it... served incorrect salad. Give wrong oz size on the filet.
Liberty duck entree
Lentil rice cake entree both were good
Way too cold to be outside, but food was great (sea bass)!
We feel like a broken record here..,..never disappointed. Always fine food, service, ambience....etc. A neighborhood gem for sure. Can't wait until the next time!
Its been too long since I could visit. Its great to be back. Excellent ambience beside a vineyard and garden, experienced and effective service, delicious food, and great reconnecting with a friend.
Other than the rats running above us and at our feet ... it was enjoyable
Oh, how I had missed John Ash! Everything about our dinner was fantastic. After being cooped up for over a year because of the pandemic, this was an evening "staycation".
Everything is quite fabulous with dining at John Ash except with limited the menu selection. Too many fish and non cooked entrees. If you are immune suppressed or not a fish eater, you will have less than a handful of menu choice. We have been to John Asher’s restaurant in the past and never have quite had this problem with menu selection. My husband and I decided to share the 1/2 of chicken plate, however we didn’t get a half a chicken we received two pieces of boned chicken, a small portion of Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and Broccoli rabe. We ordered an extra side dish of Parker House rolls since bread was not included with the meal.
Lovely family birthday fir 7 of us
The scenery and setting were as advertised- simply gorgeous. The service and food were disappointing.
Our waitress had no personality and we could barely hear her. The food was tasteless. The calamari felt chewy and fishy. Not so fresh. I had the sea bass which was so juicy but NO flavor for $37 and very tiny. Disappointing.
The bread and the dessert were the best part. And the wine list for wine country was quite disappointing.
Great food, excellent staff enjoyed the view of the gardens while dining.
Celebrating my wife's BD, we ventured out to John Ash on 04-17. We were immediately greeted and seated. A celebratory cocktail was ordered before dinner and it was perfectly mixed. Allan, our Server was excellent and very helpful. Our course started with the grilled prawns (amazing), baby lettuce with a scallop added(fantastic). My wife had the short rib dish which she raved about. I ordered the brick chicken which was very good. We also ordered a side of mushrooms - perfect. We chose the Rafanelli Zin (2018 - still a little young, however a good choice). John Ash is very accommodating to those with gluten allergies. We enjoyed a gelato dessert. The evening was wonderful, courses were served on time without being rushed and truly enjoyed the ambiance.
We had a special meal here with friends last fall and it was fantastic so we were very disappointed this time when everything was only okay. We had highly recommended the restaurant to the couple who accompanied us, and all four our us left disappointed. I doubt if we’ll be back.
It was a perfect date night. Staff was friendly and professional. They were attentive without being bossy and invasive. Food was SO GOOD and came out so quick during the peak dinner time!
