We have been coming to john Ash since the 70swhen we came up from San Jose on weekends . It is truly a 5-Star! We look forward to dinner here, sometimes with friends, sometimes by our selves , for birthdays, anniversaries, and whatever. It is always good food, and exceptional service. We tell all our friends at Varenna!
A very comfortable and enjoyable evening, friendly knowledgeable service, delicious but somewhat simple food preparations. Given all the COVID protocols and limitations a pleasant and safe getaway for a special evening.
We haven't been to John Ash in more than a couple of years, and my wife has been wanting to go back. Four of us celebrating a birthday. Sat outside in the covered area. We had a 7:15 reservation and were seated early without fuss, and ordered cocktails. Pot stickers and calamari as appetizers were served quickly and were perfectly prepared. Followed with main courses. I had the diver scallops, which had a yummy yam/onion puree, which I greatly enjoyed. We shared a bottle of Hartford Court RRV Pinot Noir 2019 which, at $72, was reasonably priced. Dessert followed, and no one was disappointed. You can never go wrong choosing to eat here - the food is well-prepared and delicious, the service attentive and corrrect, but not overly precious. Prices are appropriate for what you get. Highly recommended.
We had two martinis in the bar to start off our birthday celebration. Tables were socially distanced and there was no one else in the bar at this time. We then headed to a fantastic table immediately overlooking a vineyard next door to restaurant! Was incredibly beautiful and unexpected. Our server was very good with some great recommendations. The olive encrusted prawn cocktail appetizer was really very good ! The veal osso bucco was very tender and flavorful as was my Portobello Wellington ! Our side of mashed potatoes was delicious!
As one would expect with a restaurant in California wine county the wine list has a mostly Sonoma county focus with an occasional Napa and a few French wines. As a Pinot Noir fan we were struck for the near absence of Oregon Pinots. We find it difficult to get good food/wine pairings with California wines being mostly on the heavy side.
Good food for meat eaters. Vegetarian options are blend and average tasting.
Great food. Servers seem to be new and inexperienced. Served wine without having someone taste it... served incorrect salad. Give wrong oz size on the filet.
Liberty duck entree
Lentil rice cake entree both were good
Way too cold to be outside, but food was great (sea bass)!
We feel like a broken record here..,..never disappointed. Always fine food, service, ambience....etc. A neighborhood gem for sure. Can't wait until the next time!
Its been too long since I could visit. Its great to be back. Excellent ambience beside a vineyard and garden, experienced and effective service, delicious food, and great reconnecting with a friend.
Other than the rats running above us and at our feet ... it was enjoyable
Oh, how I had missed John Ash! Everything about our dinner was fantastic. After being cooped up for over a year because of the pandemic, this was an evening "staycation".
Everything is quite fabulous with dining at John Ash except with limited the menu selection. Too many fish and non cooked entrees. If you are immune suppressed or not a fish eater, you will have less than a handful of menu choice. We have been to John Asher’s restaurant in the past and never have quite had this problem with menu selection. My husband and I decided to share the 1/2 of chicken plate, however we didn’t get a half a chicken we received two pieces of boned chicken, a small portion of Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and Broccoli rabe. We ordered an extra side dish of Parker House rolls since bread was not included with the meal.
Lovely family birthday fir 7 of us
The scenery and setting were as advertised- simply gorgeous. The service and food were disappointing.
Our waitress had no personality and we could barely hear her. The food was tasteless. The calamari felt chewy and fishy. Not so fresh. I had the sea bass which was so juicy but NO flavor for $37 and very tiny. Disappointing.
The bread and the dessert were the best part. And the wine list for wine country was quite disappointing.
Great food, excellent staff enjoyed the view of the gardens while dining.
Celebrating my wife's BD, we ventured out to John Ash on 04-17. We were immediately greeted and seated. A celebratory cocktail was ordered before dinner and it was perfectly mixed. Allan, our Server was excellent and very helpful. Our course started with the grilled prawns (amazing), baby lettuce with a scallop added(fantastic). My wife had the short rib dish which she raved about. I ordered the brick chicken which was very good. We also ordered a side of mushrooms - perfect. We chose the Rafanelli Zin (2018 - still a little young, however a good choice). John Ash is very accommodating to those with gluten allergies. We enjoyed a gelato dessert. The evening was wonderful, courses were served on time without being rushed and truly enjoyed the ambiance.
We had a special meal here with friends last fall and it was fantastic so we were very disappointed this time when everything was only okay. We had highly recommended the restaurant to the couple who accompanied us, and all four our us left disappointed. I doubt if we’ll be back.
It was a perfect date night. Staff was friendly and professional. They were attentive without being bossy and invasive. Food was SO GOOD and came out so quick during the peak dinner time!
Everything was Excellent (House-made Parker Rolls, Tom's Fish Soup, Endive Salad, Calamari Fritti, Tips and Toast, 5 Spice Cured pot-stickers) , except for the Pan Seared Diver Scallops (Fishy smell, very salty and not tender). $$$$
Amazing! Food, service, atmosphere ... must visit. Enjoy. We WILL be back!
Excellent service and food
Food was very good and nicely presented. Waiter was nice and fairly attentive although he forgot our roll order. However, there was a table of six guests who were extremely loud and totally ruined the wonderful ambience. No one asked the group to tone it down since this was a very nice restaurant and other guests wanted to enjoy it as well!
Really sweet bartender! We got some complimentary bubbly and chocolate for a birthday too
Another great diner and service experience at John Ash & Co. The service is really great and the food fantastic. I am vegan so really appreciate that I can count on them to have at least one (two this time) vegan meals on the menu. It was one of the best meals I have had. I wish there was a place in Healdsburg that offered vegan meals (without advanced ordering) but since there isn't, John Ash will get our business.
We have celebrated our anniversary at John Ash & Co. for 25+ years. (We are on our 41st). We brought two friends to dine with us, as our treat to celebrate us and the beginning of indoor dining. Our service was slow - -and we sat for 45 minutes before our order was taken. The charcuterie platter cam with a pan of 3 rollsd for the 4 of us. Had someone tpld us there were only three, we would have ordered more. But we waited for 10 minutes, couldn't find the server opr anyone, so we just starting eating - - and finally after about 20 minutes we saw our server and asked for small plates for the platter we were sharing. When we did order, the wait was even longer, and we continually had to ask our server for sugar for the iced tea, he brought out a champagne even though we asked for a glass of rose. The service was horrible - -and to add insult to it all (I am not even going into everything that was wrong) the bill still had the champagne on. it as well as the glass of rose. We asked the server how long he had been there, and he said 4 years! We were going to cut him some slack if he was new. So not the case. We may need to find a new placewto dine and take friends out if this is the new normal. VERY disappointing.
Excellent food in a lovely location, with professional service. Fantastic A favorite local and wine country place!
John Ash has been our special event go to for decades. With that history and the various guidelines from the restaurant on the website and in emails, seemed the perfect place for our first seated restaurant dining since COVID.
The food was as good as always but otherwise it was not good a good evening . A minor point was that the waiter did not tell me that the vegetable side I ordered was also coming as a bed to the rice cake entree I ordered. The service was slow. We were there for 3 hours and long eager to depart. Despite double vaccination we will be fretting about catching COVID from our dinner for the next week, partly due to the duration of the meal. More importantly was the congestion.
We dressed as advised by the restaurant for cool outdoor seating. Instead when we arrived for an early dinner we were seated as the only party in a room. The numbers and volume increased dramatically. I was seated with my back to the room. When we stood up to leave I waa shocked to see that the room was essentially aa full as it would have been before COVID. Our county just increased allowable indoor dining to 50% capacity or 200 people, whichever is less. The restaurant clearly exceeded those parameters.
We are learning as we go, but we expect more of this fine restaurant and will not be returning for awhile.
Despite being seated where it was drafty, we enjoyed the excellent food and service.
slow service, reservation was late cold in dining room
John Ash is everything it always was! The food is small portions but really good sauces and presentation .
This was at least our 5th visit to John Ash & Co. and each time we have not been disappointed.
Our friends that were traveling with us, were told by their son-in-law that JA&C is the best restaurant in the region. After their dining experience with us they definitely agree.
We are looking forward to our next visit to JA&C.
This is our favorite place to dine and have cocktails.
I can't wait for the Cafe to re-open.
I miss having breakfast at the Cafe every Friday morning.
Didn’t have the 2014 vintage silver oak so we had to settle for 2016
We had a nice, long, leisurely dinner, however the last 30-40 minutes not as enjoyable as we we very very cold.
While we had a pleasant dinner, the food has been slightly better prepared on other occasions.
Overall it was a great experience. The food was excellent, serve was very good and the setting was good
John Ash is always a treat.
The setting is pristine and the food always delivers on flavor and presentation.
The lemon cheese cake was heaven and I would eat that as often as possible.
A perfect setting for our brunch. The food was excellent, the service impeccable, and all in all a most delightful experience.
