We have eaten at John Ash & Co. a number of times over the last few years. Until this dinner, we have always been very happy. Both the service and the food have gone downhill. It is not the same top notch place that it was in the past. Sad.
The food is good but a bit pricey for what you get. You are paying more for ambiance and service.
I took my husband here for his birthday today, and the service was slow, we both felt ignored, and the food was subpar. I would not recommend or go there ever again.
I had a good feeling about this place and I wasn't wrong. My husband and I had a great time we were celebrating his birthday, he loved it and I think we will definitely be back soon.
We really enjoyed our meal at John Ash as a special treat while visiting Santa Rosa. The crab fritters and short ribs were delicious. We also enjoyed the local wine. Great for a date night.
We were celebrating a special birthday celebration and all of the staff were very respectful and polite. The food and ambiance were amazing! We will definitely be back for more special occasions!!
Loved it! The food, service and ambiance was wonderful. We really enjoyed ir.
The venue was excellent. We sat on the patio which was well heated with a great ambience. The menu was good and everyone was able to find something or two they wanted. From a service side, I ended up with two non meat selections just because that’s what I wanted and the waiter made the effort to check whether I was vegetarian as the amouse bouche has fish in it. Nice touch. Everyone liked their dishes. Wine list was fairly priced for a restaurant and we had a delicious choice. All in all a very nice evening and we would come again.
Can’t wait to return
As always a great choice for dinner with your special person(s).
We celebrated New Years Eve dinner plus my husbands birthday and promotion. I noted these other two celebrations on my reservation notes. I was thrilled that the staff made special arrangements to acknowledge my husband. It was special. The dinner and atmosphere was spectacular. Elegant yet comfortable. Highly recommend.
We looked forward to enjoying a New Year’s Eve dinner with friends. Frankly, we enjoyed John Ash far more earlier in the year - holiday dining is often less impressive, given the fact that so many are out - the effort was there, but everything felt somewhat rushed.
We went to John Ash for New Year's Eve dinner. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for the holiday. Unfortunately, we were given a table right next to the servers area and it was very busy and I had to look into a wall while my husband looked into the restaurant. The dinner was a price fixe which was expected(no price was ever posted) for the holiday but the website said that the menu would be posted before the holiday and it never was plus it said that the dinner would include champagne or cocktail but our waiter said it was only champagne. Dinner was four courses and we both enjoyed the salad with duck to start and my husband had the soup and I had the lobster gratin for the second course. For entrees, I had the salmon which was very good and my husband had the filet which was overcooked. Dessert was very good - we each had a trio of chocolate. Overall it was a nice evening as we weren't rushed but I will ask for a better table next time to really enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant.
Servers were in a major hurry. Slamming plates on tables. Slackey on water refills. Seemed like a few of the servers were on drugs with the major mouth movement side to side. Food wasn’t all that. I can cook halibut better.
When you want excellence in dining John Ash fits the bill. Every course was delicious and service impeccable.
New Years Eve
This is such an odd restaurant and I can see why the reviews on Open Table are all over the place. Our experience was very mixed. We went on Sunday night at 8 and it was relatively quiet. The restaurant is beautiful inside and the outdoor patio with fantastic heat lamps is very pleasant.
The wait staff seemed very junior and needs training. Over the course of our dinner we saw 5 different waiters/busboys/wine people. At one point one of them came by and said: Can I take that, man? An amuse bouche (the most disgusting fish paste any of us had ever tasted) was served in a wonton soup spoon but put on plates such that it slid around when presented at the table. At no point did any waitperson attempt to make any form of greeting - hello, how's your night, been here before? Just junior.
The food is equally puzzling. Beside the vile fish paste, a Chile Relleno starter is the size of a coke can and served with rice, guac and salsa. A Little Gem salad was uneventful and coated in sea salt. Two of my guests had seafood - and, btw, they are heavy on shellfish but only had one fish on the menu. Both liked their black cod and scallop/shrimp entrees but said there wasn't enough accompaniment - ie: they needed more greens and sides on the plate. A "lamb 3 ways" was served inelegantly with stewed onions on a saucy plate - a sausage, chop and filet. Bland, unicolor and messy.
The wine list is very good. The setting is nice. We all left saying that this restaurant is a diamond in the rough - with some appropriate management of the waitstaff and a chef that picked a lane and elevated the food, this could be an awesome spot. For now it is just mediocre.
The service was good and efficient. The food was plentiful; we didn't leave hungry, however, the flavor profile was relatively bland and there wasn't anything fresh on the plate. Plenty of starch in sub for fresh veges.
John Ash is a tried and true fine dining restaurant near Santa Rosa/Sonoma County Wine Country. It also offers a less formal "bar" menu in the Front Room with excellent food from the same kitchen as the full restaurant. Menu items change seasonally, are very well prepared and served in a warm and inviting setting that can be cozy in the winter and open to the surrounding gardens in the warmer months. Service can vary with occasionally poor attention to detail but is generally good. Great location for a birthday dinner or similar special occasion.
Everything was perfect, too perfect. Place needs some soul.
Always excellent food and service. Just a lovely evening.
Most entrees were fantastic. Overcooked shrimp affected our rating. Service was indifferent.
We had Christmas Eve Dinner with 2 friends. Very good service, excellent food, very small table. Kind of uncomfortable. Maybe they added tables because of the occasion.
We have eaten there many times and had a fabulous experience. This time was really off from the time we arrived, we were seated at a cold breezy table on the patio. We stayed at the resort for three nights and made a reservation a month in advance. We should have been asked if the patio seating was agreeable with us. When we complained, we were moved inside to a different table inside.. We noticed 3 other couples were seated later at that same table we did not want, and all left to a different table as well. Seems that the host and hostess was trying to push the cold drafty table on some unsuspecting diner. The server said the prime rib was their special and so I ordered it. My plated arrive and the meat was raw and full of fat. I literally had to continually carve fat off to get to a morsel of edible meat. My husband got sea bass and the preparation was bland and the plate covered in kale. When we were done dining, The server could not get our bill right after several attempts. We were very disappointed since we were accustomed to a very pleasant experience overall for the many times we have dined there in the past. Not sure if we will go back as this was so disappointing.
Amazing food, ambiance and service! Our favorite place!
It is our Christmas Eve tradition to eat here. Lovely atmosphere and superb food. Highly recommend
John Ash is our Christmas Eve tradition. They never fail us and always make our holiday special. We own 2 retail businesses, so I cook Christmas Day, but Christmas Eve we are ready to relax and be taken care of. The BEST!!!
Used to enjoy going here. Special occasion two nights before Christmas, service was poor, value of the food was not up to par, all in all a disappointing dinner experience. Shame on John Ash for not checking in to see if his restaurant is living up to his reputation.
Menu is exciting, lots of choices. Food is delicious. Service impeccable. Wine sommelier at your service.
Great food and service. Expensive.
went for college graduation celebration. super on all accounts, food, service, drinks, ambiance. wonderful night!!
Fabulous dinner and ambiance!!
Impeccable service and truly gourmet food. Well worth the cost.
Always a quality meal in the restaurant or the bar. Even when busy, you can have a conversation across the table.
It’s always nice to start with the extensive happy hour - great specials on appetizers and beverages- and then move into an always enjoyable dining experience. Last night we had an assortment of dishes. The calamari and roasted beet salads were perfect starters. The chicken and the short ribs were beautifully presented and delicious! The gelato at the finish was “YUM!” for sure!
Christmas time....everything was beautiful. Service was wonderful!! Old fashions were amazing!!
Always worth the money!!
Always a great meal and amazing atmosphere! John Ash is one of those restaurants to go for a special occasion dinner or just a date night. Great service, great wine list and really good food. I am never disappointed!
We had 2 out of town visitors with us and wanted to give them a taste of Sonomas best. We were not disappointed!
I had one of the best filets I've eaten! Perfectly done, with the right amount of sauce, superb sauteed spinach, vidalia onion rings and yummy potatoes. A perfect meal, served on the patio with plenty of heaters and sparkling lights!
