Perfect For:

  • Good for a Date
John & Sons Oyster House - Downtown is out of the way from the hustle and bustle of the financial core but at the same time right in the middle of it, hidden away. From ducking down our little street, you feel as though you are doing something deliciously wicked. When you walk in the door of our 40 seat joint, you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon the best speakeasy in town and you’re getting away with flouting all the rules while everyone else behaves. You may think you’ll only have a few oysters and a quick drink while you’re there, but everything around you conspires to make you want to stay longer. Our fare varies according to the time of year, coastal fishing quotas and weather conditions. We can always shuck to order from a selection of 5-10 different Oysters daily, drawn from both our own beds in P.E.I. and the best growers in Canada, the USA and further abroad.

Entertainment
Half table seating, half bar seating this place is a bustling neighborhood gem. It can get a little loud and it is supposed to; it's an Oyster Saloon. It's a small place and everyone is there to have a good time and relax a little bit. We are not perfect, we are not a place for every occasion but we try our hardest to ensure you leave happy.

Superb wine list and oyster selection. Many appetizing apps and mains to choose from. Great to share with your date or order individually. Staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. A great find!

We came here mainly because they offer fresh oysters. The place is small so it gets filled up quickly. It has a cozy feeling but you have to talk loudly to have a conversation. My fish tacos tasted really bland and dried. The taco itself had a weird texture, the lettuce is undressed, and they only squeezed a little bit of saracha mayo sauce on the dried deep-fried fish. It was supposed to be banh-mi style, but I didn’t find any pickled carrots or radish. So, I wouldn’t recommend this main.

All four entrees were overcooked and either lacked seasoning or were strangely seasoned. Service was lacking. Maybe the oysters are okay, but the rest should be avoided.

Fabulous experience as always. Food was outstanding and the service was top notch. Despite being short staffed and very busy Ian did a great job of being attentive and getting us out in time to get to the game. Thanks!

After some initial confusion regarding seating and ordering, we were offered a complimentary oyster selection to start our night.
The staff were accommodating and the wine was wonderful.
The oysters were excellent and the lobster poutine (made gluten-free) was divine.

Everything on the menu was delicious! The only downside is that they don’t serve the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert anymore.

Food and drinks were great, our server was lovely. Overall positive experience. If you are looking for a fancy night out - this probably isn't it, but if you are looking for a low key, good quality, all around solid place for oysters and more, you can't go wrong.

We arrived for the oysters and were not disappointed! most amazing selection of top quality oysters, mostly from the east coast, with one selection from BC. All very good.
Freshness and quality was outstanding, and the wine pairing was amazing. Servers were very knowledgeable and helpful.

Our favourite place in the City to have oysters and a glass of wine. Service was a bit slow last time but we still loved it.

Small, buzzy Restauant serving great oysters, seafood (mostly) and other good food. Fantastic service...good range of drinks (beer choice a bit limited for me) and definitely recommended.

We likely hit an off night. I’ve been for lunch and the food seemed fresher and tastier. Not sure if a chef issue. Also, and I get it, it was super super loud in there with patrons basically yelling and no one asked them to tone it down. So we ate fast and left as soon as we could. Thanks

The haddock and chips was great. Easily one of the best batters and preparations that I have ever had. The fries were yummy too, and malt vinegar comes to the table without having to order it. I would recommend this for a business lunch or a friends gathering for sure. It's a great little place at the bottom of the ocean of office towers. Worth the visit.

I met a client there for lunch at her suggestion for a fun lunch. The Chablis with the oyster plate was just the beginning of a wonderful relaxing time. The tuna tartar and calamari that followed were the perfect follow-up. It was hard not to polish off the bottle of vino...so we did leaving 1 1/2 hours later. I would recommend this to everyone within walking distance for a lunch experience you will remember.

good as usual. Only problem was that because of the backlog the oysters that we ordered when we sat down did not come until after the mains which were ordered a half hour later. Unfortunate.

The ambience, wait staff, and service were superb. The oysters they serve, with the freshly grated horseradish is some of the best in the city.

I would highly recommend John and sons solely for oysters and drinks, they are magnificent.

Where they consistently fall flat (for me and gf) is their food. It is very poorly done, and frankly, they need a new executive chef. Every time we go, we rave about the oysters, staff and drinks, but discuss the food disappointment.

Don't make the same mistake - have oysters and drinks, but go somewhere else for dinner if you need.

Hidden gem in the middle of the financial district, the place is small so make sure you reserve in advance. It can become a bit noisy as the space is small but food is great, good wine menu
