About John & Sons Oyster House - Downtown
John & Sons Oyster House - Downtown is out of the way from the hustle and bustle of the financial core but at the same time right in the middle of it, hidden away. From ducking down our little street, you feel as though you are doing something deliciously wicked. When you walk in the door of our 40 seat joint, you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon the best speakeasy in town and you’re getting away with flouting all the rules while everyone else behaves. You may think you’ll only have a few oysters and a quick drink while you’re there, but everything around you conspires to make you want to stay longer. Our fare varies according to the time of year, coastal fishing quotas and weather conditions. We can always shuck to order from a selection of 5-10 different Oysters daily, drawn from both our own beds in P.E.I. and the best growers in Canada, the USA and further abroad.

Half table seating, half bar seating this place is a bustling neighborhood gem. It can get a little loud and it is supposed to; it's an Oyster Saloon. It's a small place and everyone is there to have a good time and relax a little bit. We are not perfect, we are not a place for every occasion but we try our hardest to ensure you leave happy.

John & Sons Oyster House - Downtown Ratings and Reviews
Overall great experience. My Parents came to visit and I was able to get a reservation last minute on a Friday night. The food was amazing and the servers knew the menu and were welcoming. The only downside was that they forgot our mains and we waited for a while. However, they quickly made it up by giving us free glasses of wine! Would recommend this for anyone who is looking for a unique and fun dinner place downtown!
The food was great! Made a reservation several weeks in advance. Our table was not ready but luckily we only had to wait a few minutes for the corner bar seats to open up. Service was a bit slow but we really enjoyed our dinner. It's a great place to pop into downtown.
This place had the feel of a Boston Oyster house. A bit tough to locate, however that added to the "feel" of the Oyster House. Food was amazing, although just had oysters and tuna tartar. Service was excellent, with added touches of ambiance. We will definitely be back for dinner!
Loved it! Been to Rodney's, Oyster Boy, Pure Spirits, and Diana's but John&Sons was the most memorable! A real cozy feel with the wraparound bar. The shucker was so calm and cool, shucking dozen after dozen, and not a spot on her nice white blouse! Service was fast and friendly, and we even went during busy happy hour when everyone was ordering $1+ Avonlea's.
Great apps to go with the oysters: lamb sliders, fried smelt, and grilled octopus were fantastic.
Will go again. And again!
This is a great place for oysters especially when they have their happy hour everyday and drink specials every day! The food and the chef are awesome I don't think there's a bad thing on the menu! You can almost make a meal out of their fantastic appetizers that they have on their menu.
Great oysters from PEI, Duxbury (MA), and Brewster (MA) ... shucked well, and nicely displayed on the ice tray ... along with nice (not overpowering) sauces. Friendly bar tenders / wait staff. The Risotto with the soft-shelled crab was most excellent. Nice beer selection. Worth the trip!
Great experience. Service was consistent but not overbearing. The highlight from this visit was the lobster roll. Absolutely great for lunch. The restaurant was a touch loud but that's mainly because it was a Friday at lunch time. I look forward to coming again.
Came for an early dinner with an old business friend. The layout of the restaurant is more like a modern bar with tall tables and bench seating. The ambiance was quiet enough for conversation but bright enough to show how clean and crisp the restaurant is. Started with a dozen oysters and then enjoyed the tuna main. The selection of beers was limited but excellent. Service by the lone server was crisp and efficient with long enough social visits to feel well cared for.
Overall would have been 4 bordering on 5 star but for attitude of "hostess" which was unpleasant and tended to spoil evening. Table service, food quality and ambience were very good. Although food quality was high, portions were small and both food and drinks were reasonably expensive.
It was ok but nothing special. Very loud which is annoying when u can't have a talk across the table without yelling... Its the typical downtown Toronto douchebag crowd all yelling over each other. Oysters were excellent but food was nothing interesting. I wouldn't go back or recommend to anyone...
Had a good time here. Food/oysters were great, and contrary to some tripadvisor reviews I had read, the service was both pleasant and efficient. Tried a variety of east coast oysters, lamb sliders and the lobster poutine...all excellent! The NE clam chowder was good, but used a sweetish element that I was not used to.
Still, worth trying and unique.
Would definitely come back again to dine/drink!
We opted for the Summerlicious lunch menu, and were pleasantly surprised. Great ambiance, friendly servers and tasty food!
Both my friend and I loved our meals, but they were on the smaller side. On a positive note, it seemed perfect for a quick lunch, and didn't weight us down. I'm not sure if the portions were due to the fact that we ordered off the Summerlicous menu
The portions seem a bit inconsistent as well - we both ordered the soft shell crab - we noticed that one order was significantly bigger than the other.
