Johannes Ratings and Reviews
THe service is probably one of the best in Palm Springs. They even knew to refill water glasses by taking the glass off the table first- not thrusting the jug above the table and pouring. The timing of everything worked: drinks first, menus, specials descriptions- time to look at the menu then order taking. THe food was not rushed and the support staff (bussers) also did not removed finished plates UNTILL ALL WERE FINISHED THEIR COURSE! (This seems to be a forgotten observation of curtesy lost today when bussers swipe up plates, cutlery, condiments before the ENTIRE table has finished eating.
The food was clean, clear, uncomplicated and authentic and of great value.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first time at Johannes and will return soon hopefully!
We have been coming for aprox 14 years, the three has had a considerable decline in quality of food and drinks
We have recommended has the best martinis in the Desert, but this last one was all syrup, terrible
The Schnitzel was greasy, that I was ill once I arrived home

Great meal and nice atmosphere. They were three of us standing together and we each truly enjoyed our entrée as well as the incredibly tasty wild mushroom soup and a house salad. The Apple strudel was fantastic. We had nothing but praise for our meals, and for the whole experience of the evening. . We also appreciated the open feeling of the dining room.
The Wiener Schnitzel is perfect - we are from Switzerland have been here several times in the last years and always liked it very much. This time we took my niece and her husband who live in L. A. My niece is originally Austrian, leaving in the US for about 45 years. She did not no Johannes and will now a guest again, when she spends some days in Palm Springs.
This was the best meal we've had in Palm Springs. The food is really excellent! We shared an entree of crisp-roasted duck (succulent!) C had the shrimp cocktail which was superb, and I had the lovely cream of wild mushroom soup. We both succumbed to the tempting desserts: the berry sorbet with fresh berries and the creme brûlée.
We hope to eat here again before we leave Palm Springs.
Johannes used to be by far the best restaurant in Palm Springs. I also used to recommend it often...
The food has definitely gone down hill, but even more than that, the server was curt, rude, and carried a large, unfriendly attitude. I thought the restaurant business was supposed to be part of the HOSPITALITY industry. Sadly, not much hospitality here. Nothing chides more than having your loyal patronage not only feel unappreciated, but be met with condescension and disrespect. This is not the first time this has happened at Johannes, but it was the last... I will never go back.
This is a Bavarian restaurant that tries a little too hard. This is a small, noisy place with cramped seating. Their pumpkin curry soup was outstanding. The parsley pate as a spread for the nice German bread was not a winner. Beautiful cut of lamb chops were roasted to perfection, but the sauce detracted from the flavors. Their trademarkbwiener schnitzel was tender, buttery and more than ample. Staff tended to be officious, more focused on selling than serving.
Highly recommended by a friend because it serves “the best schnitzel in town”. In this respect I am sure she is right. All our food was delicious, especially the Schnitzel, but the rest of our dining experience lacked the other things which make a restaurant good.
We had a slightly condescending & cold “welcome” from the Maitre d. Possibly because we were obviously tourists, English & possibly because we are a middle-aged heterosexual couple. Whatever the reason, it was off-putting.
Then we were given the worst table in the place, right where the waiters rush in & out at the very back of the restaurant.
This restaurant is plain & modern with no frills & it is seriously lacking ambience, unless you count noise. Having no ‘soft’ furnishings they have put sound baffle panels suspended from the ceiling. They do not work.
So much as I dislike turning in a bad review despite good food, I cannot recommended Johannes as a great night out.
Always reliable! Good comfort food with a slight adventuresome edge. Solid cocktails and wine list. It surprises me that there are still locals in PS who have never been there. They are always impressed and pleased. I keep going back (>10 years) because it's so satisfying. Service is impeccable; I suspect staff like to train there because they have dreams of having their own restaurants some day and they know that Johannes give them good experience.
We were a party of six. The food was outstanding. The mushroom soup was the best I have ever had. Another diner ordered the spaetzle appetizer and raved about it. For an entree I had an evening special, the roast brauten which was flavorful and served with he creamiest, richest mashed potatoes I have ever had. Three others in the party had the goulash (another special) and all loved it. Definitely going back.
Our wait service was amazing considering our waitress was handling at least 7 tables by herself. We both ordered the schnitzel which we could have shared one. Although the restaurant charges a split fee. But it may have been worth the extra fee to not be over stuffed. Food was good and tasty but I realized I'm not a schnitzel fan after this. The meal was just too heavy and filling. Loved the cold corn soup and cocktails were really good. I will try the place again but the bar area looked better to me with better prices.
Reserving and confirming was easy . . . they were very thorough and accommodating. The server that evening was excellent. The menu is a little too specific for my tastes but the food was very good. Unfortunately a table of six loud wine reps made a nice, quiet dinner with good friends almost unbearable. This happens all too often these days in Palm Springs. Restaurants are going to have to choose between low-key regulars and unruly visitors. Too often it seems they go for the latter. How hard is it to tell a table to keep it down?
We went to Johannes with a friend who has eaten her many times. We went early & the place had just opened but we had plans for the street fair later so it was good to have an early dinner.
Everything we had was excellent. I had the fried oysters appetizer and a black cod preparation that was sublime. My wife had a chicken curry that was very generous and delectable. Our friend had the rack of lamb. He reported it was great and it looked it.
They have a fine wine list but I chose a Czech pilsner since I like Czech beers a lot and it was a fine choice. Desert was the apple strudel, which is highly recommended and it was outstanding.
We loved our meal and will come back.
