Johannes Ratings and Reviews
Best food in the valley. We live in Palm Springs and we enjoy going probably ever month. It is one of our absolute favorites. It is fine dining, but in a Palm Springs comfortable environment. The owner clearly knows what he is doing. The food is consistently some of the best you will find anywhere in Palm Springs. While casual, nice shorts and shirt for men would be appropriate, but t-shirts and swim shorts would be underdressed.
This dining experience was memorable to say the least. Everything was fabulous from drinks to desert. As a lover of sauce my veal scallopini with a truffle sauce was to die for. My husband had the ahi tuna which was incredible with a great sauce. Our appetizers of the fried oysters and brussell sprout salad was delicious. The menage a trois desert sampler was a delight as were our macchiatos and sangria and cocktails. The server was bubbly and enthusiastic. My only complaint was being put in the back room despite asking to be sat up front in the main dining area.
WE ATE HERE LAST YEAR. THIS YEAR'S MEALS WERE DISAPPOINTING; VERY SMALL PORTION (TWO TABLESPOONS) OF TUNA AND AVOCADO FOR $14. RACK OF LAMB WAS BLAND, WITHOUT MUCH FLAVOR. HALIBUT ($42) ALSO DID NOT HAVE MUCH FLAVOR.
IT WAS DISAPPOINTING AND LEFT US WITH A BAD TASTE IN OUR MOUTHS. WE WON'T BE BACK.
It was New Year’s Eve, so take this for what its worth.
We had 9:30 reservations. Waited 30 minutes. Got seated at the worst table and had to move (yes, there were other open tables even though we waited).
Immediately, we were told our server was leaving for the evening, even though she confirmed as our server for the evening when she called to confirm our reservations a week earlier. So, new server. Then, he wound up leaving too!
Food was good. The venison chops were outstanding as was the halibut.
Service was the issue and it was pretty bad. And they added a gratuity even though there were only 4 of us.
Just be cautious there on the service. Again it was NYE, but we were paying $119 pp, so we shouldn’t have been an afterthought.
And that is how it felt.
We came for dinner with 2 young kids. The restaurant did not offer a special kids menu but seemed to know what to recommend for the kids. It was very disappointing when they still charged the full price for the kids dishes. The food it self was just ok. The beer was great.
Thank you for the excellent attention to detail, accommodating our request for changing tables to the bar window table and the server tonight had a great smile and cheerful attitude which deserved a great tip as a thank you for our first visit to this restaurant! Thank you
The food was incredible. Just awesome. Martinis, Malaysian meatballs, schnitzel, duck, strudel. Jesus, Joseph, and Mary! 2nd best meal of my life. Parking was impossible, though. Plan ahead. Took 20 min to park and walk to restaurant. But well worth it! Many gay men on dates made it fun, too!
Nice restaurant, Great food.
That said, they have a propensity to play loud saxophone squealing Jazz music. Not exactly what you want for the background of a romantic dinner. When you ask if they might change the music (and we love Jazz but not like this at dinner), the answer is No. When you ask if they might turn it down, it's a major undertaking. They are obviously focused on entertaining themselves, not their guests. Shame!
This was our first experience with Johannes (Christmas eve dinner). We took our family a party of six to celebrate Christmas eve. There was a fixed menu which was fine, however, the fixed price of $89.00 per person was way over priced. The bill for six was $732.00 included tax and tip,
alcohol purchased was one glass of wine and one mixed drink. I know it was Christmas eve but we felt $89.00 for a very average dinner was way over priced.
We visited the restaurant for Christmas Eve dinner. While the staff works hard and is friendly, everything was formulaic and lacked the extra flavor or personal touch. The meal was also just a degree above good, for example, the beef was very good but the balsamic reduction was extremely bitter as opposed to sweet. Words spoken by the staff were limited to the basic order taking and asking about the food. Just a little more effort in the preparation of the food and making the guest feel welcome throughout dinner would greatly improve this restaurant.
We are foodies and we are Austrian so this might be critical. Cauliflower/lobster bisque delicious. I guess never enuf lobster. Aurugula/pear salad very nice, nothing different but it was well done. Opah, a little dry, too much sauce. Lamb was chewy but nicely prepared. Shrimp cocktail had a lovely presentation and delicious. Tried some of the Austrian food, Yeager shnitzel and cheese spaetzl surprisingly wonderful. Sorry if I goofed up the spelling. Our waitress was pleasant, serviced us reasonably well and not very friendly. No time for “pleasantries”. Just got the food out and the bill. Good wine and beer list.
This was my third time to this restaurant. My other two experiences were better.
Oh and I forgot the apple strudel is terrible, 🍎and no Sacher torte. (Famous from Vienna)
Johannes is extraordinary. Their legendary Wienerschnitzel and Spaetzel are equal to or better than those I've enjoyed in Europe, and others in the group who ordered one of several specials were also quite impressed. There also were quite a few variations on the schnitzel theme on a special menu. We were too full for dessert, but the strudel served at the next table looked luscious.
Our server was friendly, attentive and always nearby but not intrusive. All of the food and drinks arrived at just the right time.
There's no shortage of great restaurants in Palm Springs and the other desert communities, but this one is well worth driving a few extra miles. It's a relatively small, intimate space so reservations are a good idea -- especially when the temperature isn't conducive to outdoor dining.
The main drawback for us was HOW LOUD THE MUSIC PLAYED - the entire time we were there. WAY too loud jazz constantly. We were completely unable to have a conversation between the 2 of us. Otherwise I would have given this 5 stars but we won't be back again because I felt like my ears were ringing afterward
