Joe's American Bar and Grill - Waterfront Ratings and Reviews
Sadly the simple breakfast of 3 eggs was very disappointing for me. All eggs were barely cooked, even as over easy, so had to send them back. Was given new plate and they're slightly more done. Best to ask for " more done" unless you like runny white in your over easy eggs.
Friendly service; wide-reaching menu that surely would satisfy any diner's taste. Really good traditional American fare. I had ribs-- half rack was plenty for me, but someone with a bigger appetite should get the full rack. My dining companion had the salmon and thought it was excellent. We ate the evening before in the upstairs version of the restaurant which was also superb. Upstairs is calmer, fancier, but both have great food (slightly different menus). Service was friendly and efficient. View of the water is wonderful if you get a table along the window (lots of them). We will go back!
We made a reservation at Joe's for 7:30 for 7 people and were right on time when we arrived. When we checked in with the hostess there was another large party walking in behind us. After taking our name, the hostess told me that the party that had just arrived had a reservation for 7:00pm and was late and that she would be taking them and then would take us when another table was available. We had to wait 20 minutes for that table even though we were the ones on time.
Then, in the reservation, I noted that we were celebrating my husband's 30th birthday. Neither the hostess or the server acknowledged the celebration and after informing the server, she replied by saying "oh Happy Birthday!" There was nothing special done to honor this occasion and it was quite disappointing. Our salads were good but one person ordered steak and it was very tough and overlooked. My husband ordered lobster Mac and cheese and the portion was so small looked like it was an appetizer. Very poor value.
We were very disappointed and regret choosing Joe's to celebrate this occasion. We could have chosen a million other restaurants in Boston that would have made this celebration more special and way better value.
We went as a party of 6 on a rainy November night. We sat next to a very large party with a gaggle of little kids. It felt like Friendly’s . Because it was nighttime there was no view just large black windows reflecting the noisy crowded dining room.
The food and service were good. I would recommend Joe’s on the waterfront for lunch so you can enjoy the view.
The only issue we had with our visit was the waiter, Jacob. We had to ask for everything. Coffee refills. Jam for toast. Butter. Ketchup. At no point did he offer any of these and we were continually having to flag him down for coffee during the breakfast.
He had all the personality of a doorknob. We tried to crack jokes with him and he was just not responsive at all. It was Sunday morning so maybe he was hung over from the night before?
Having been in the food service industry before myself, when a big table with 11 people is seated in your section, you take care of them knowing that a substantial tip could be involved for better and personalized service and attention.
We chose this location to treat our family and friends that came to town for our wedding the previous night before putting them on the plane back home. It did have an impact on the overall experience of the restaurant. The other servers who did interact with our table when bringing out our food were wonderful and we would have much rather had one of them waiting on us and having a good time rather than Jacob.
I would suggest management have a talk with Jacob to see if he is happy with his job or if this is even the industry he wants to be in as a career.
When you are looking for good comfort food, with the company of good friends, in the surroundings of a comfortable setting, and with a waterfront view, this is somewhere that you should go. Don't expect gourmet. But the bar-style, grilled food menu, beer on draft, and amicable service, makes it the perfect place for that hang-with-friends Friday get together. I'll be back for the fish and chips and a pint soon.
Joe's was just as the name implies, average. Not great and not bad. Good location right on the waterfront near the North End and Aquarium. Prices were moderate and the service was good. The lobster was a little tough but the roll was well buttered and toasted. The salads looked good and the fish sandwiches okay. Overall a good place for lunch. I think the inside could use a little freshening up.
Since we’re from out of town(Ohio), we haven’t been to Joe’s in a few years. We love the clam chowder in a bread bowl. However, we were hoping to order some seafood and didn’t find much to chose from, so we split a hamburger-which was good, just not what we went there for.
Joe's is an ultra-casual American menu dining spot on the Boston's busy and scenic waterfront. We were greeted rather indifferently, and taken to an inside corner table with a fantastic view of the harbor - and many flies (trying to escape). We got a table further in, which was fine. The ambient music was quite loud, but tolerable. People were generally happy
with the food, the ahi tuna salad a standout. The fries are excellent! My martini was superb. Our server was great - friendly, knowledgeable and responsive to our needs. Apart from our server, the staff seemed strangely glum. The rest room was immaculate (we were there early evening).
We were shockingly disappointed by the service at Joe's. The food was good, the service was pathetic. We couldn't flag down our waitress to get refills on our drinks, and we asked 4 people for the check before finally getting up after 25min to flag down the hostess to ring us up. With 3 servers for 10 tables + a manager and a crew of people busing and delivering the meals it just shouldn't be an hour thirty for lunch, especially when you sit down ready to order.
Great Calamari, bread bowls of chowder, yum, the chicken piccata is good and I also would recommend the steaks! The manager bought us a piece of cake to celebrate our 20th Anniversary, this was a very nice touch to a beautiful waterfront view, great food and good company.
Horrible food and high prices. Ordered the calamari and it arrived cold and was beyond rubbery. Disgusting. Hamburger was mediocre. Definitely expected better quality for the price. Charged $15 for a glass of wine..not the wine I ordered. Will never go back.
Joe's is a great neighborhood establishment. Location right by the water is amazing. The clam chowder is the best, in the city or elsewhere. The outdoor seating in the summer is wonderful. The menu always includes great seafood selections. The wait staff are always upbeat and very responsive to customer's needs.
Had trouble with seating. Found out reservations did not cover outside so we took a table inside. As we were being seated in a booth my wife saw a window table and asked if we could have it instead. We were told it was reserved. Less than 2 minutes later a group was being seated in the booth behind us and they too asked about the window table and were immediately seated at it. This was a different person seating them so as she passed by our booth I told her about it and she immediately offered to re-seat us at the table but we declined. After the meal I asked for the manager and told him the story. He was immediately apologetic and offered to comp the meal. I said that was unnecessary but he insisted. The incident was well handled by everyone but was an unsettling way to begin the meal. By the way, our server (looked just like Tom Brady's wife) was outstanding.
Our server was great. Friendly and attentive. Our drinks were good. Our food was very mediocre. The chowder was incredibly thick and rich and did not have many
Our lobster roll was fine but not outstanding. My friend had blackened fish sandwich which I think meant burnt sadly. It was just lackluster
We had a great Sunday brunch at Joe's. In addition the clam chowder is the best!! The hot bread that is brought to the table, the quality of the food, the serving sizes, the numerous coffee refills -- outstanding restaurant with great views of the harbor. We have often brought out-of-town guests to Joe's for the atmosphere and food. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Nothing to recommend this place. Servers are overworked and overstretched with tourists that think they own the place. Loud; think screaming infants and mass families. Food was mediocre - an absolute waste of money - even worse - an absolute waste of time.
Way better options .
If it's the mass tourist thing you are looking for - this is the place ; otherwise - stay well away
We visited Joe's on the Waterfront for my son's birthday. We had a table inside, but we were right by the windows and had a great view of the waterfront. There were lots of tables out on the dock, as well. Our waiter was great and even brought a complimentary cake and sang, "Happy Birthday" to my son. The menu was pretty reasonably priced for the area.
