Joe Theismann's Restaurant
We had to send some food back and others simply kept their food because they didn’t have time to wait for the food to be cooked again. The price was high for the quality of food we received. I do not see us choosing this restaurant again anytime soon.
Genuinely friendly staff and great service. They have an updated menu with enough choices to satisfy anyone. Comfortable seating options at the bar, table, high top or booths. Great food unpretentious atmosphere.
We are frequent diners here and are always satisfied with the food. However, The last few times that we have eaten here we have noticed that the food is extremely salty. Yesterday, the nachos, salad dressing, tomato soup were all extremely salty. Perhaps , the chef could leave the extra salting to the diner.
We have been here several times in the past. Unfortunately, this time was not as enjoyable. our reservations was for 12:30PM on Saturday. First, parking was a real problem. My husband drove around for 15 minutes looking for a space. The garage where there is usually parking available was closed. There is construction in the area and street parking was impossible. There were four of us. I really enjoyed the bowl of crab and corn chowder. My husband was disappointed with the Tuna Poke bowl. It was more salad than there was tuna poke. He wished he had ordered something different. The other couple had waffles and the crab cake entree. They both enjoyed their meals. So, we will probably come back again but not until they finish the construction to the metro and maybe pick a different day and time.
Visited for our son’s early 21st birthday. Victor was our sever and he was on point! Everything was timed perfectly and his menu suggestions and knowledge was most appreciated!
We would also like to give a special shout-out to Ruth, the server assistant. She always remembers us and always has a kind word!
Thanks so very much!
I chose to take my family to Joe Theismanns for our first night out in Old Town Alexandria. We had never been there before and my son loves the Redskins so Theismanns seemed to fit my family of all boys.
It was so hot in the restaurant that we were all uncomfortable and when we got our food my youngest was disappointed with his steak it was not easy to cut. We are not sure if it was the knife or cut of ribeye. He eats ribeyes quite a bit. My other son had the crab cakes and they were so small he needed a few more(not for the price though) The frosted mugs were not frosted they were chilled wet!!! Our waitress said they do not come any other way than the way she brought them to us.
We ate as fast as we could so we could get out of the heat.
We got the fish and chips and the fish tacos. The tilapia was cooked to perfection. Just a really good restaurant
Great neighborhood restaurant, Food was great. The noise level was way up with the crowd that came in when I was there-great for business; but, not for conversation. Otherwise, always good-great food.
Service was great. Food was great. They were out of my Scotch but life’s full of little disappointments. Overall a great experience!
Birthday dinner. Very loud hard to even hear across the table. Food was good after they got it fixed. Decided to take the piece of cake home (to go). Got home and found it was not what we ordered
Thiesmans needs a face lift. Material on seating is worn.
My daughters birthday
This was a solid option for brunch with my (rather picky) nieces and nephew. Lots of options with a bunch of solid standards to satisfy everyone. Our waiter was super friendly and did a decent job. The food was fine and did the trick; it's just nothing amazing overall. I'd be back here with my picky eaters, but not sure I'd see a reason to be back here for any other reason.
Crab cakes never fail at Theismans! Service was also excellent. A very enjoyable evening. Wish the noise level was a bit lower though.
Very pleasant. Attentive wait staff, good food.
First the restaurant is in a great location in Alexandria - just outside of the train station. The seating at the restaurant is varied - outside under an building overhang, inside at the bar, 4 person booth, 2 or 8 person tables, and larger seating areas. The service and staff are great - helping with food choices and making sure you are happy with your meals and drinks. Speaking of drinks - the Mississippi Martini is the best!
A fun place that is casual yet nice at the same time. A good variety in terms of menu. Comfort foods with an original touch. Sports on the monitors if you are interested. Convenient to King St Metro. I will definitely be going back when I am in the area.
We had the fillet, grownup grilled cheese, and strip steak. Prices were excellent, especially for the area, which is otherwise expensive. Quality was exceptional, the fillet and strip were so tender and flavorful that they neared Wagyu quality. Staff was attentive but not in your face always interrupting seeming to time things when there were pauses in our conversation. Sides were spot on flavorful and portions were right for a satisfying meal. In short, worth a visit and return visits are planned!
Thiesmann's has changed their menu. Ten of the people who I work with were very happy with the old menu, but don't like the new menu. Because of the menu change, 10 customers have been lost.
Always one of the great restaurants to go to in Alexandria. The food and service are always above average with an ambience that is comforting and pleasant.
Sierra our waitress was fantastic, our food was excellent great evening
This was my first time at this restaurant and my date and I had a great time. While waiting for our table we had a glass of wine; there wine list was plentiful and prices were reasonable. Overall meal was delicious and the server checked on us multiple times.
The food was pretty good. The atmosphere is casual. The ambiance was good and the service was great! I would recommend.
Peter is an awesome server! He had excellent menu knowledge and even better suggestions!
Please thank him for us!

The food was excellent! The waiter seemed a little uninterested and checked on us "just because."
Menu was noticeably different from the last time I visited. Was deeply disappointed that they no longer serve nacho, quesadillas, chicken Dijon, Louisiana Pasta, and pork chops as they were my favorite under the previous ownership. The red Sangria was delicious. We were a party of 6 and the responses to meals were All American burger, beef stroganoff, and fish and chips were very good. Jambalaya was okay. I had the salmon and it tasted more like chicken than salmon. I’m pretty sure it was farm raised and certainly not the best quality. Service was great.
Food was ok. Very loud restaurant. They sat a couple with a dog next to me after my meal arrived. They didn't have the common courtesy to ask me if this was ok. It's not.
Simply the Best!
The only reason I didn't give five stars is because I didn't think the carrot cake was that great. It seemed dry and too many nuts. The Zinfandel I had and our dinners were really good. Our waiter was great.
I travel to DC area regularly and when I stay in Old Town Alexandria I am always excited about Theisman’s as my first meal of my trip.
I used to eat at Joe Theismann's all the time, as I enjoyed the vibe, the high-quality casual food, the range of options on the menu, and the offering of "complete" dinners (meaning rolls and a starter salad included with your entree). But the menu has changed dramatically. It is much more limited, with all of my favorite dishes having disappeared (e.g., the original lasagna, the California chicken, the turkey burger, the grilled banana bread dessert). Meanwhile, the prices have gone up and the complete dinners are gone -- you now have to make a specific request for rolls, if you know they exist(!), and entrees no longer come with starter salads. My most recent meal there was okay, but too expensive, and certainly not exciting enough to tempt me back. I miss the old Theismann's. Sigh.
We have eaten at Theismanns many times before. We were very disappointed in the new menus and the food. The bread was stale and tuna excessively salty. We hate to lose our go to place and will give it one more chance before moving on for good.
As always, JT's hits the spot, never disappointing. Great restaurant, tucked away from all the hustle and bustle.
The wine selection for the Valentine's menu was wonderful. The mushroom croquettes were to die for! My husband had the steak. He said that it was very well cooked. Everything was very nice and well worth it. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!
Wonderful Valentine’s menu! Great service and food
I had a tuna poke salad that was nothing more then chunks of tuna in heavy sesame oil on wilted lettuce. My husbands steak salad was equally un appetizing....how can you mess up a salad? It used to be a really good neighborhood spot. We won’t be going back!
Excellent seating. Convenient parking makes for an enjoyable experience
Outstanding ambience, service & food on a special ( & crowded) night. Congratulations to all the staff which made the night go flawlessly. Thanks
