Since 1965, Joe Allen has been a quintessential New York restaurant serving a classic American menu in the heart of the Theater District. Just two blocks from Times Square, it has been a favorite of Broadway performers, locals, and tourists for almost 50 years.

Please note that we begin taking reservations 7 days in advance starting at midnight online and at 11 a.m. over the phone.

Parties of 6 or more must call the restaurant directly.

Due to the high volume of reservations we receive for pre- and post-theater, we can only guarantee a table for a maximum of two hours. If you would like more time, please contact the restaurant directly to make your reservation.

Joe Allen is one of the best spots in NYC. Warm, comfortable environment where you get great food, service and ambiance. (And if you are a theatre fan, you are pretty likely to run into some major Broadway stars dining.) This past trip our service was impeccable as always and Jonathan, in particular, was not only an amazing server and bartender but, AWESOME to chat with at the bar! Definitely hit Joe Allen's when you are in NYC!!!!

Pre-theater on Monday night. Sat at table bar side. Man at next table kept hitting my seat. Service inconsistent. Food just ok. Menu could use ‘refreshing.’ Bartender makes a solid cocktail.

Came here for my birthday lunch and the experience was incredible. It was quiet during the lunch hour. The service was absolutely perfect and the food was easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life. I can’t recommend them enough.

You don’t really go here for the food, although it’s fine. It’s the ambience and the wait staff, both theatrical and fabulous. We love it here.

I was really excited to try Joe Allen after hearing that it was a long-time theater district establishment favored by actors and tourists. I loved the ambiance - this is a great place for a date, a cocktail, or a pre-theatre meal. I'm sad to say I was disappointed in the food. It may just be what I ordered - my husband enjoyed what he had - but my fries were under-cooked and squidgy and the burger was just OK. I would probably go again and try ordering something else though, given that the service was good and I enjoyed the location.

Joe Allen's is a go to place in the theater industry. They always treat us beautifully, we see colleagues there, it's like a club for us. But I think for anyone who wants a good dining experience in the theater district, they will be well pleased at Joe Allen's.

Joe Allen is a good bet for pre-theater dinner, mainly because of its location. The food is fine (turkey burger and lobster roll), but not exceptional. The pecan/sour cherry pie, however, was delicious.

Was there after a performance at Feinstein’s/54 Below so there was a lull at the restaurant since most shows were still performing. It was quiet and relaxing. Our server Reed was very attentive and sweet. From the moment we walked in the door we were treated well. We miss the meatloaf! Hopefully it will come back. Food and desserts were plentiful. Look forward to returning.

I got there at 4:50 for a 5 o’clock reservation. The waiter immediately get me a drink, which I appreciated. Then he took my order. And I was served my steak at 4:59. It all felt a little rushed! The drink and fries were good. The steak only so-so. If you were looking for a quick meal before a play, I wouldn’t make my reservation more than an hour and a half in advance

I’ve been going to pre-theatre lunch and dinners at Joe Allen for about 40 years! It was always one of my favorite restaurants in NYC! We had our usual 1:30 reservation on Sunday where the 3 of us were looking forward to their signature salad - the LaScala! We were told that at 2pm it was still brunch (were they kidding? 2:00?) and therefore we coukd not order our favorite salad. Instead we ordered some sort of chicken salad (the only interesting thing on the trimmed down menu!) that was inedible and which we washed down with $13 glasses of house wine! Yes! $13 for “house wine”! So sad to see this decline. Next show will have to begin at a new restaurant!

My husband and I stopped here for lunch before our matinee show. Despite showing up early for our reservation we were seated immediately and greeted by our server quickly. The speed of service is great for a pre-show stop - the employees work together like a well-oiled machine. We tried the chicken and shrimp salads and both were delicious. Highly recommended for those who need a quick, yummy stop before or after a show.

I took my 14 year old grandson for dinner. The food was good, and he definitely enjoyed the fudge cake dessert. We had a very small table which felt crowded. The diners at the table next to us were really loud so our conversation was difficult. When they left it was better.

Joe Allen is dependable, very good service and good value.
