Since 1965, Joe Allen has been a quintessential New York restaurant serving a classic American menu in the heart of the Theater District. Just two blocks from Times Square, it has been a favorite of Broadway performers, locals, and tourists for almost 50 years.
Please note that we begin taking reservations 7 days in advance starting at midnight online and at 11 a.m. over the phone.
Parties of 6 or more should call the restaurant directly.
Due to the high volume of reservations we receive for pre- and post-theater, we can only guarantee a table for a maximum of two hours. If you would like more time, please contact the restaurant directly to make your reservation.
I just adore Joe Allen and am thrilled that their kitchen is once again up and running at top form. I had a terrific guacamole to kick things off followed by the most delicious calf's liver and onions I've ever tasted. The waiter recommended their house red wine and it was really just perfect with my meal. The service is as always, simply the best at Joe's. Thanks to all the staff for the consistantly excellent service and marvelous food.
Great for pre-theater. Service outstanding! Good martinis!
Muy mala experiencia ,la comida no merecía la pena ,el pollo seco y la hamburguesa nada especial .
Reliable, convenient, & consistent. A New York treasure.
The atmosphere is very nice. My main complaint is that I tried to make reservations prior to going to the theater. my preference would have been around 6 pm. On OpenTable the latest I could get reservations was 3:30 pm. There was virtually no one in the restaurant at that time and hardly anybody in there when we left about an hour later. I heard an employee tell someone on the phone to come in between 5 and 5:30. Probably will not rely on OpenTable to make reservations anymore. The other complaint I have is that my husband and son ordered the hamburger. My son ordered his well done and it was rare. My husband ordered his medium and his was well done. With hardly anyone else in the restaurant you would think they would get this right.
The gas at the restaurant was off so the menu was limited. We were not warned ahead of time and were disappointed.
What happened to some of the delicious food items starting with the best ever French fries!? Also the meatloaf mysteriously disappeared from the menu also. Bring them back!!
Had to eat at bar as reservations were behind schedule but Rich was attentive and professional!
Joe Allen’s isn’t what it was...Food was just ok, service was really slow and inattentive. I’d gone there for many years on at least a weekly basis but hadn’t been in a few years. Disappointing.
Love the authentic restaurant and atmosphere. The bar is a favorite. Drinks always good, service can be a bit lacking sometime. I wanted to order the quiche but wanted something light before hand. So, I had asked the waiter and he suggested I order a green salad. It was good and I saved some to eat with my quiche. The waiter tried to take the salad away several times before my entree arrived. I told him I was saving it to eat with my quiche. Then my quiche came with guess what? a side of mixed greens salad. The waiter did not even address it. He gave us such attitude through the whole meal while he blatantly flirted with the table next to us. For a restaurant that we frequent, he made us feel like second rate guests. We never tip less than 20% at JA but actually thought of a much lower tip that night but left 20% anyway. Oh and bring back the meatloaf please.
Our experience at this restaurant was terrible. The food was absolutely awful, it was very pricey, and I would not recommend it to anyone. In our party one person had a crab roll which came with potato chips. He said it tasted like something directly from a grocery store freezer. Another person had a steak which looked like it had been microwaved. It was tough and flavorless. I had a hamburger which was very mushy, American cheese was not available so I had to settle for the cheddar.Overall, I would definitely not recommend this restaurant.
Love coming here pre theatre. Just wish they would provide a few more brunch menu options.
If you are looking for an easy place to go to that is reasonably priced this is it.
Amazing as always...but what’s up with no vegetables?
It was a great spot close to the theatre. I was seated right away even though the rest of my party was running a few minutes behind - something I greatly appreciated and would return solely because of this. Our waitress was very nice and my burger was DELISH!! My boyfriend's steak however wasn't so great. He said he tasted like it was very recently frozen and heated up quickly. He would return again and order the burger.
Perfect place to have a delicious supper before a show!
Simple but varied menu. Limited wine list but well suited. Really love the NY saloon atmosphere with dark wood and classic photos on the wall. Had not been for a long time. Will certainly be back. Great value.
Food and ambiance very good. Our served Skylar was exceptional!
Stopped there before going to see a 5pm show. Arrived for a 2:45 reservation and sat right away, we were the only ones there! It was after the morning brunch rush and afternoon matinees so the staff must have been in a shift change or all taking their breaks because our server was not around and we were the only ones there. We were able to see the staff sitting on the other side of the restaurant eating their own meals but not many staff members came to check on us. At one point we asked the hostess to get another round of drinks.
On a better note, the food was delicious! If you want to try it out maybe go not at the time we did and I’m sure it would be a much better experience.
Went here after a show - nice atmosphere, delicious food, and prompt, courteous service — great spot for pre or post-theatre!
Very disappointing dinner
Chicken in chicken salad was dry.
Salmon not at all evenly cooked.
Confusion on the menu as to side dishes that come with entree
Water was good however
Took some out-of-towners here for the New York theater vibe, and they loved it. We were grateful for the lack of piped in music so we could talk without shouting at each other. Lovely staff, nice food, especially the awesome desserts. Wish the roast chicken came with some veg, though.
This was a birthday lunch for me and some family members from out of town. The service and food could not have been more perfect! They gave us the royal treatment for sure including their famous banana cream pie with a candle in it. I simply adore Joe Allen’s and the fabulous staff there and thank them for such a happy time for my birthday!
Fantastic lunch. Convenient to theater. Very attentive service. I will be back😁👍
Menu was limited. I remember having a wider variety of choices the last time I ate here.
Always a delight
We loved the ambiance and the service; it was great. I was disappointed in the food I ordered, the tostado. My other dining companions ordered the burgers and were happy with them.
Great good and great service! Perfect night out for dinner before going to see a broadway show.
The hamburger was rare and fresh, the quiche a knockout, not a chocolaholi but the chocolate pudding cake should not be missed.
Higher expectations with the food and I had to continue asking for water. However, the staff was quick to give me the ticket!
We had a great time with family before the matinee of To Kill a Mockingbird. Love this place!
While the food was generally quite good, the service was lacking. This started with the chaos at the front desk, where three people studiously ignored us until we caught the eye of the coat-checker, who found our table (we had reservations and our guests had already arrived).
Then we Wai am 20 min before a drink order was taken, and the bottle of wine took a considerable time to arrive.
There's a difference be attentive but measured service, and just slow, and this was in the second category.
Visiting NY & a revisit to this cozy restaurant.
Joe Allen is my favorite go-to, pre/post theater restaurant in NYC. It’s classy in a low-key manner, the staff are friendly, service is great and the food is always simple and delicious.
A lively, fun after theater spot. Menu was limited due to some construction issues they are having but all four of our meals were excellent and well prepared. Bread is good and service was great! I would go again in a heartbeat
A classic after-theatre haunt. Great burgers, wonderful salads, a super roasted chicken. Nothing fancy, just good solid comfort dining surrounded by theatre folks.
Still waiting for the gas to be reconnected so they can offer their full menu.
A delightful experience. Perfect for pre theater venue.
Love this pkace
One of my staples. Service and food are always excellent, and the atmostphere can't be beat.
Service and food was outstanding! When I made the reservation I told them it was my girlfriend's birthday and our dinner was for a pre-theater 7PM show. We had a cozy table away from the bulk of the other tables and ambience was comfortably romantic. Waiter very efficient and friendly. I needed to charge my phone and he offered to get it done for me while we ate. They brought a very appropriate desert with a small candle in it for my girlfriend and then left not embarrassing her with a big show by allowing me to sing HB quietly to her. Highly recommend for dinner any time for any occasion. perfect location close to the theater district.
