About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
We take reservations starting one week in advance of your desired date--seven days in advance, starting at 11 AM online and over the phone. And with Broadway's staggered start times, things get tricky, so if your desired time is unavailable online, please give us a call; we hold a certain number of tables for phone reservations only. For parties of six or more, please call the restaurant directly.

Because of staggered theater times we can only guarantee reservations made online for one-and-a-half hours for parties of two, and two hours for parties of three or more. Apologies, but we don't reserve tables "only for drinks."

For reservations after theater, please check your show's running time on our website.

Since 1965, Joe Allen has been a quintessential New York restaurant serving a classic American menu in the heart of the Theater District. Just two blocks from Times Square, it has been a favorite of Broadway performers, locals, and tourists for almost 50 years.

We had lunch at Joe Allen's before a broadway show. We ordered the escargot as an appetizer. It was good. We had the chicken salad, niçoise salad and frittata for our entrees. All were fresh and delicious. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails too. Our server was professional along with the rest of the staff. Our experience was great and we will return.

When first walking in we were hit with a smell of mold. I am highly allergic of mold and had to start taking meds as I didn't want to leave as my wife planned this for our anniversary. The food was good. The price is high for what you get but that's New York. The staff was nice. It is an old building and I get that but mold only grows in wet environments. The ceiling had water stains and have pictures showing it. As long as you can deal with strong odor of mold you will be fine. I hope the fix the water issue and remediate the mold.

Joe Allen's continues to be the top choice for NYC Bdwy theater-dining. They open early enough for 7:00 curtains and stay open late enough for after-theater full dining until 11:00 or 11:30 at least. Food is exceptional, calves' liver exquisite, hamburgers juicy, salads crisp and fresh. Reservations a must many days ahead, as early as you can place them, because they fill up fast. You will never be disappointed at Joe Allen's. Only negative (if you wish to engage in discussion or romantic subtleties) n is noise level, which is energetic, excited, enthusiastic and loud.

It was an uncrowded Thursday lunch hour and boy, did my girlfriend and i luck out in choosing Joe Allen. Our server, Sarah, was delightful: charming, attentive, and extremely patient in catering to my friend's dietary concerns. Her recommendations were also spot on. The salade nicoise was perfect for me, with beautiful fresh tuna and terrific greens, roast potato, etc., and my friend's chicken was delicious too -- both dishes were generous. We also enjoyed sharing a 1/2 litre of Pinot Grigio -- delicious, perfectly chilled, and reasonably priced. Sarah let us linger so we never felt rushed. A wonderful lunch. We will be back,
