JJ Astor Ratings and Reviews
I recently went to JJ’s for my anniversary. My hunny had never been to Duluth before and I thought it would be a great chance to give him a beautiful view. The food was excellent, definitely get the sinner fries. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and so helpful. I would recommend to everyone.
I felt the food was a bit over priced for the quality, didn't seem fresh or well prepared. However service was great and everyone was friendly. Something I was highly dissatisfied with was the cleanliness of the bathroom. It's was dirty, toilet paper on the floor, feminine products overflowing from bins, water all over the counter, soap dispenser wasn't working so there was a store bought soap container that was written on with black marker indicating it was for the bar.
Usually great food and service, yet not so much this time around. Only checked in our table of 6 one time. Steaks were definitely well done, not the medium as ordered. Ordered spicy pecans to take home, only to find out they were plain after getting home. Embarrassing to drive all the way from the cities for a dinner with my parents.
Had an awesome time although wasnt impressed with the bartender I ordered a drink and it didn't taste good ask him to remake it he did but felt like he was mad about it the second one still wasnt very good but I decided not to complain Hopefully when I'm there again this weekend there is a different bartender
So we were in town for pleasure and read reviews on places to dine while in Duluth and landed on JJ Astors. The reivews were pretty accurate. The view was awesome and the rotating 360 degree roof top restaurant was certainly unique. The food was ok and pricey with a limited menu. The service was very good and friendly. Overall things were ok with a nice view with a supper club type feel.
We had been warned that the food was just "okay," but we enjoyed our meals very much. The view is stunning and the decor is fun, if a bit worn-looking. Our server was inattentive and rude, but we could see that the other servers were good. When our table rotated near the bar, we became aware that our server was flirting with a woman in the bar, which explained why he never bothered to check in on us. ;) A nice Anniversary choice all around.
We took my 88 yr old mom and her friend there. With the exception of the plaster that was falling down on one spot of the ceiling by the window, it was great! It was easy for them to move around and bathroom was close. Waiters were friendly and knowledgeable about the food and the Duluth history. Food was excellent and the view we had was fabulous! Will definitely go back!
My wife and I ordered the Walleye dinners described as pan seared with a lemon caper butter sauce over fettucine. The Walleye was over-breaded and mushy, the butter sauce tasted like it was made from lard, the fettucine was sparce and overcooked (like plastic). I ordered a Margarita which did not seem to have any tequila or any other alcohol in it. It also had a very artificial flavor to it -- didn't taste like a Margarita or any other drink I have ever had -- the aftertaste was awful. My wife ordered a martini, when bringing it to the table, the bartender bumped his elbow and a good portion of the martini splashed out of the glass, he served it that way; didn't even take it back to the bar to top it off. Very disappointing -- even the beautiful view did not make up for the awful food and drink. Won't be back!
The walleye meal was very good. The main attraction for this restaurant is the revolving dining room for spectacular views of Lake Superior and the surrounding area. The dining room walls need some serious updating. Our server acted like he was too busy to take care of us even though there were several empty tables.
We chose JJ Astor as a place to celebrate our fortieth anniversary because of the excellent level of service and the quality of the meals that they offer. Our server did everything to make certain that our special day was memorable. Add the beautiful view of Duluth, the harbor, and Superior and you have a magical time!
We went to JJ Astor's for our anniversary. We had very, very slow service! They were also out of 2 of the items we wanted to order that evening. We ended up with OK food, great drinks and OK dessert...all of which were over priced! The server was very sweet but she had too many tables and just forgot about us. Also if you get motion sickness I wouldn't dine here, the revolving motion made me and my husband sick and neither one of us get motion sick! It moves very slow but still messes with your head and stomach.
You pay for the view... but it's worth it. If this is your first trip to Duluth, as it was for us, there's no better place to get a spectacular view of the harbor while you dinner than this. If you're a Duluth native or frequent visitor, it might not be as impressive. The food and service were very good, but make no mistake: Duluth is a foodie town, and there are even better options at this price range. The JJ Astor experience is all about the view.
