Jewel by Tom Schaudel Ratings and Reviews
Good and not so good. The restaurant is beautiful. The food was delicious. The service on the other hand was lacking. There were three tables eating (including us) and while we were outnumbered by the waitstaff, service was not up to expectation. Asked for butter for the bread - twice. Our waitress did not engage with us and did not smile at all. Had to stop her walking by us after dinner plates had been cleared to say we were ready to order dessert. Did not feel the Love. Busboys were absolutely wonderful though. Will return at some point. Disappointed that service was such a turnoff.
The service is wonderful here...great appetizers, order a few and share...good selection of entrees to fit a lot of tastes...even desserts are varied and really good...chocolate bag is the best for 4 on a girl's night out to share! This is a favorite place on Long Island for good food, good ambiance and good friends!
I was dining alone that evening, but the Host and the waiter made me feel very welcome and comfortable! My waiter picked out a beautiful Malbec for me and I trusted him with choosing my entree. The Bronzino was delicate, flavorful, and presented beautifully. What a great find!
We decided to try Jewel since it was a Tom Schaudel restaurant. We were greeted warmly at the reception area and shown to nice table in the back. Restaurant week had nothing to do with it, but we decided to go with the prix fixe menu. We ordered glasses of wine and waited and waited. The waiter finally came with our wine after stopping at another table to pour theirs. I would have expected more individual service. We both ordered the same salad. When they arrived they looked like different salads. I would have expected more in presentation then we got. It looked like there was a large salad bowl in the back and the server just grabbed some tongs and lumped the salad on the plate. The entrees arrived and were tasty but very over salted. Then when dessert arrived (we were served the others selection), which we ordered with the regular meal which I thought was quite odd, they so sweet we couldn't eat. I am not sure if I will even give the restaurant another try. We found the staff to be very green and the food to be imaginative but poorly executed.
We have been here at least a dozen times over the years and restaurant eeek did not disappoint. Wonderful selection and we chose the quite sushi backarea fir a friend’s get together . Service was wonderful and so were the cocktails and meal offerings . We will definitely return again.
It was restaurant week, so we were limited to the prix fix menu, which was a bit disappointing since some of us had looked at the online menu and wanted items from that. We were all able to find something we liked on the prix fix though, and the price was reasonable. When we received our dishes, we saw that the portions were very small, almost like tapas or lunch portions - I don't know if the portions are always small or if it was just because of prix fix, but most of us were still hungry after 3 courses. And the drinks were very pricey (each couple spent $130 with drinks and tip, the meal itself was $28.95 per person). There are much better choices in Huntington, not sure I would go back.
From the minute you walk in the door till the minute you leave, every aspect of a fine dining experience is covered. Great food, service, and ambiance! Have had both of my sons graduation dinners here, have dined here often and its always top notch! One of my favorites!
As usual the food for the five of us was great. The bar scene on Friday night was frantic so we asked if they could put us as far from the bar as possible which they where kind enough to do. But they went even further by putting us in an enclosed room, the silence was deafening. Since this was a double anniversary dinner the conversation was easy to hear. A great move on their part.
I go to Jewel because i was expecting a star (lunch) performance. I was a party of 2. My expectation was NOT met.
After being seated my writer disappeared after asking if we wanted bottled or tapwater. (We wanted bottled sparkling). Which is normally an indication that I was looking for a better experience.
Then he came back more than five minutes later with the bottled water. Why so long?
Then he disappeared for another 15 minutes without taking our lunch order. Our order was taken by the maître d’.
Someone from the kitchen came out and didn’t know who ordered the soup. Shouldn’t that be pre-decided by the time my food comes out rather than asking i”who gets this”.
Then they cleared the plates and never asked about coffee or dessert. Then the maître d’ had to come over and say that the check would be coming soon.
You can get good food at a lot of places now. And ambiance is over rated when the service is below par.
All in all I will probably not be going back to Jewel for some time.
Unfortunately, the mussels were not fresh, but I should have known better than to order them in late October. The octopus was very good. The beet salad was average. The salmon was tasty, but the squash accompanying it was uninspired. The branzino was average. The desserts were very good.
Should have started with dessert! I got the chocolate bag which was so delicious and my fiancée got the pistachio ice cream sandwich- both were AMAZING. I only challenge the portions of entree/appetizer VS price... I got filet and he got lobster both were great but definitely felt the restaurant “mark up” on my wallet
This is our got to place for family birthdays. It is always spot on for ambience and service but can be hit or miss on the food. This recent visit I was a little disappointed with my skirt steak which is usually one of favs at Jewel. This time the portion was much smaller than in previous visits and it came lukewarm as if it had been sitting somewhere pre-cooked but delicious nevertheless. The presentation was fine but the plate wasn't warm. The staff ( eg. waiter, hostess and Manager) were excellent and very attentive. We have been coming to Jewel for sometime and it remains one of my family's favs on LI.
We met good friends for Saturday night dinner. Bar was lovely, Bartender very friendly and great at mixing special drinks. Dinner was a bit disappointing. Service was extremely slow. For the price, definitely not worth the value. Bread basket was cold and boring, dinner entrees tasty but very small. Desserts overpriced and again very small. I would not go back.
I’ve been to this restaurant twice... came a few minutes early to reservations, and the restaurant was busy but many empty table, both times had a reservation, and both times told to wait at the bar till our exact reservation time... after our reservation time came ack to the hostess and she told us we had to wait at the bar, she wasn’t ready.... this honestly was awful for service. Everything else was great. Our waiter was very nice and prompt.
I love Jewel & chose it as the place to celebrate our anniversary. The (young) hostesses greeted us rather rudely when we arrived 10 minutes early. *We run on time so you will have to wait at the bar* when clearly there were several empty tables. After 10 minutes, the maitre D’ got involved and could not have more cordial & apologetic, seating us promptly & recognizing that we were celebrating our anniversary. Even the waiter mentioned it, so clearly there was communication between the Maitre D’ and the server. As usual, the food was outstanding and table service friendly & attentive. I did find it peculiar that there was no mention of a complimentary beverage or dessert......even the (young) hostess acknowledged our anniversary as we left. Kind of left my husband & me with a weird feeling. Chef was in the house, overseeing each plate before it was delivered. I’m sure that he had no idea what transpired. Might make me think about going elsewhere next time.
I am a frequent diner at Jewel. At least 4 times a month. Mostly lunch ,sometimes dinner. The service is always outstanding as well as the ambiance. The menu can be updated more frequently. However, my favorite selections are always on the menu.
I recommend Jewel to my personal and business friends.
I also attend Networking Luncheons in the Sushi room...Excellent food ,service and ambiance.
We went there for my wife's birthday and the service and treatment was outstanding. They greeted very happily and extremely welcoming. All the staff members who served us including the metro-D wished my wife a happy birthday, including remembering our names (small things, huge difference.) We were there during restaurant week so the food was reasonably priced and well executed. We'll definitely go there as groups or as a romantic weekend dinner.
We have enjoyed Jewel before for various occasions. This was a Saturday evening following the Engeman Theater with friends. Tom Schaudel was doing his usual orchestration of the visible kitchen staff which performs at a very high level. He justifiably enjoys a high profile as a chef and his team, both in the front and back of the house, is top notch.
Arguably one of the top 10 restaurants in LI, and there is lots of great competition in this area!.
Jewel never disappoints. The standards we've come to count upon is like coming home again - grilled octopus salad, shrimp and veal meatballs, Thai coconut mussels for starters- and then some surprises to keep things hopping. Can't turn down the Millionaires Pizza - ever. Other favorites for mains include the root beer braised short ribs, anything risotto, monk fish.
