Jewel Bako Ratings and Reviews
I had appetizers and a sushi entree. The paper hot pot and other appetizers were delicious. The fish was fresh although not memorable, and the sushi rice was serviceable. I wasn't thrilled with the service. It took a long time to take our order, although the couple next to us who arrived after us was attended to very quickly. Maybe we weren't as chic looking. The server was gracious and attentive once he got to us.
Uber small and tight seating, louder than an F-16 idling in your driveway and priced for royalty.
Menu absolutely small and limited with NANO PORTIONS presented with a magnifying glass.
Sake WAY overpriced!!
Left with a huge bill and extremely hungry. Went to John's Pizza directly and had a few slices!
Jewel Bako is a true gem. Intimate and elegant, this restaurant serves the freshest sushi outside of Tokyo. Service is professional and polite with an undertone of respectful friendliness. We always get the sushi and sashimi omakase and are amazed at the deliciousness - every time. My favorite sushi in the States!
Getting charged ~$100 for 6 pieces of a la carte sushi was a very unpleasant surprise at the end of an otherwise decent sushi/sashimi dinner in a very nice ambience (this was more than their omakase & the server did not point out price upfront for these off-the-menu items; note that my order included some uni) . I will not be back here and if you decide to go, please make sure you check prices before ordering off-the-menu items. I called the restaurant afterwards to describe my experience, the manager apologized but said the prices were on the menu and even visible on the internet. Not true and not true - all in all you can get much better quality, service and transparency at other high-end sushi restaurants in NYC.
A friend from Memphis recommend the restaurant, the head chef trained under a local sushi chef. The sashimi was fantastic, we sat at the sushi bar and chose one of the tasting menus. Our chef educated us on the various fish he served us. Great service, cool vibe. Would take this over Nobu any day.
Sat at Chef's table. $125 tasting menu. Most amazing sushi experience ever and I've eaten a lot of sushi over the years. Sushi was delicious and featured a lot of fish flown fresh from Japan and other places (blue fin tuna from Spain). Fish plus mastery of our chef with creating sushi made every morsel a delicious and truly one-of-kind experience. Watching him create our food was educational and fun. Chef and staff very friendly and engaging. Sake was excellent. Warm inviting atmosphere - cozy feel. Have been to several other notable Michelin star restaurants, but this is now my favorite. My heart is singing. Got good recommendations from chef on where to go in Japan to get sushi - different approaches in different areas. We will definitely be back.
Just continues to remain excellent. We did the omakase sushi and sashimi for the table, and also had some appetizers. Consistently excellent fish, and the service was spot on. May not be as widely trumpeted as some of the other more recent entries to the NYC sushi market, but Jewel Bako just continues to deliver a great night of dinner.
Incredible experience! I have lived in the East Village for 3 years and am always seeking out new restaurants to try out. This one was blocks away from my apartment and was by far one of the best sushi experiences I've had.
The quality, service and ambiance was memorable. I would love to go back again.
