Great restaurant. Menu is, colonial fare and very good. It can get noisy by the Bar.
There seems to be no end to Beer selections. For non Beer drinkers they offer a fine selections of Cocktails. Servers are attentive and know the history of the Tavern. We have a favorite server, "Shannon".
Crowded for a Thursday, but there aren't many local dining options. Kitchen/waitstaff seemed overwhelmed, but food was good /very good when it arrived. If you're not a "known" local, better have reservations re-confirmed. Will return, on a calmer night.
The shepherd's pie was a huge mound of mashed potatoes swimming in a very dark brown gravy with pieces of minced meat. Neither in a restaurant or at home have I ever seen a shepherd's pie like this. It was terrible.
The fish and chips were hardly better. The fish seemed to have been previously fried and heated up.
The chips were quartered potatoes that were soggy and not very warm
Ample food portions. We ordered meatloaf, fish and chips, shepard's pie, and pilgrims feast. Everyone loved their meals. The shepard's pie presentation was awesome. That meal literally would feed 2 people. Both people would be comfortably full from that dish alone. All of the other meals were equally good and heartily proportioned. Our group really wanted to try the desserts but we were all to full. Good value for the money. Will be back again.
Great historic tavern, huge selection of Bavarian beer, colonial fare!
We loved this place! The food and service were both excellent. Plus, the historic atmosphere is fantastic! Lastly, the beer list is like no other. We wish that we did not live an hour away, but we plan on coming back as much as we can!
Great awesome food big dishes
After reading the reviews for restaurants in New Castle, DE, we chose Jessop’s for its strong reviews and historic charm. Our evening was like being transported to an English pub with standard pub fare with a focus on craft beers. The food was great, the service as strong made better by their period dress. We dined in a home built in 1674 and it maintains much of its original charm. We highly recommend Jessop’s for an historic evening.
Nice comfort food, good value for the money. Usually the service here can use improvement but this time our service was perfect. We were served by one of the gentlemen who usually works the bar and our service was perfect. Awesome selection of Belgian beers, worth it to try something new.
We will be back to try the fish and chips and Turkey dishes next.
Jessops was recommended as a good place for delicious food and a great atmosphere. We agree. The food was excellent and we loved the historic building. Waitresses were friendly and dressed in period garb. I have already recommended it to other people.
Wonderful! Delightful service!
Tho is a colonial gem in historic New Castle, Delaware. Very old with historic charm. Food and service is wonderful. It’s a delight to dine there.
I was glad I had made a reservation prior to coming down to the restaurant. We had sailed the tall ship that day and everyone from the ship came to the restaurant to have lunch. We walked past the long line and got to sit right down instead of having to wait an hour for a table. Great Service and food was delicious!
I am so glad a friend recommended Jessop’s. It is my new favorite eating out place. As an English ex-pat I love the fish and chips and the shepherds pie is delicious! Beer choices are very good for those with a palette for good brews.
Jessop’s always takes you back in time! Cozy and candle lit. Perfect place to go on lazy Saturday afternoon. Chicken pot pie was amazing!
Jessop's Tavern is a very authentic tavern. The floors are original. They had candles lit. The staff are all dressed in period dress and all very nice and helpful. The Delaware Mule was excellent. They have a very extensive list of beer and the one I tried was excellent. The charcuterie tray was great. The crab dip was different from any I had ever had. Their fish and chips have been voted #1 three times. My husband was not as impressed unfortunately. I has the meatload which was very good. We didn't have dessert but they all looked so good, plus they have a variety of ice cream. Great little place in a historic location.
I am not the type to eat in a bar, but I came here because I scheduled a historical tour of New Castle and wanted to keep up with my theme. The servers were very nice and I was very happy with their service, but their "uniforms" were offensive, but I guess that is how they dressed in bars in colonial days. I was looking forward to the Seafare's Catch Chowder being a hearty seafood chowder, but it was only slightly better than campbles Maryland crab, with only a few smallish pieces of seafood. It also would have been nice to have some crusty bread to go with my soup, which we were not offered. We also got the "Mossels" and Fish and Chips, these were very good. With this portion of the meal my husband and I received a small piece of texas toast to share. The other thing I wish there were not so many flies landing on us while we ate, but I am not sure that can be helped seeing it is summer and we were close to the door.
Bel endroit très ancien et antique , nourriture excellente et prix abordable
We went to Jessops Tavern to celebrate the 76th Birthday of our mommy/wife/mom-in-law/gramma/great gramma (she has so many names these days)! None of us had been before & it looked intriguing! Jessops did not disappoint! Our server was fantastic, friendly & attentive! The food incredible! The beer menu was ginormous! The atmosphere & staff in period clothing brought us back to colonial times. We will definitely return!
I love this restaurant and come here often especially when we have out of town guests. I requested the booth because the noise level is high. It is easier to have a conversation with people in the booth. The booth was ready on arrival which was great. My husband loves the pot roast . He said it was excellent. Our guests had the London broil open sandwich and the fish and chips . They said they were great. I had the shepherds pie. I have had it multiple times in the past. This time It had an over abundance of mashed potatoes. It presented very sloppy and did not look like the nice tower it usually is . I feel I was cheated out of the meat .I did not complain because we had guests and I did not want make a big deal about it. It lacked flavor because there was so little Meat. I was very disappointed in my choice . I hope someone tells the chef for Saturday July 14 th and tells him he messed up .Our waitress Alicia was very nice and I would like to give her high marks . I will go back but I probably will never order that dish again.
I am never disappointed. Excellent food. Top notch service. It's worth the trip from Trenton, NJ to New Castle.
Great location in historic olde New Castle, De. Friendly staff, great fish & chips, Guinness, large food and beverage selection. Ample seating
Wonderful ambience; it is truly like a trip back in time. The choice of Belgium beers is beyond anything one might expect. The wait staff is attired in period costume; all very knowledgeable of the foods they serve as well as the libations.
Love Jessop's great atmosphere. Bar is well run. Lots of good drink choices.
Another great dinner. My prime rib was excellent. My wife had the Ahi tuna special and loved it. I do miss the 10% off coupons they use to email on birthdays, anniversaries, and every once in awhile.
We very much enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere. The service was courteous and prompt. It was especially meat to have dinner in a 300+ year old building!
Food was very good. The only complaint is that it took our appetizers a long time to come out and then the main course arrived soon after that. We hadn't even finished our appetizers!
Enjoyed full turkey dinner with spinach salad. Waiter recommended smaller salad portion. Thanks for the recommendation. Enjoyed leftovers the next day as well.
Great service, as always. Best prime rib ever, cooked as requested. Our server, Benny, was great, friendly, knew menu well and the beer. Benny as been our server before, nice to have him again.
Awesome food! Awesome atmosphere! Loved the Sweet Potato fry appetizer! Looking forward to our next visit
The special occasion was finally spending a night in New Castle after admiring it many times in quick pass-throughs. It was delicious and perfectly in keeping with what someone would like about New Castle.
went for a date night under a recommendation. was so glad we went. super cute location, nice atmosphere and great character. beer list is huge, and other drinks are awesome as well. had a fabulous meal that was a great portion size, reasonably priced, and left filled and satisfied.
We love this place! Great food! Great beer menu! Great ambience! It never disappoints.
Two of the people in our party ordered the Shepard’s pie. As my father in law was about 1/2 done with his food, he found three long hairs mixed in with the meat at the bottom of the Shepard’s pie. He was disgusted and of course he stopped eating it immediately, and my husband who also ordered the Shepard’s pie felt the same way. I absolutely lost my appetite at that point as well. We told the waitress, she picked up His plate of food and she said “oh it must have been the person making it. Sorry. Is there anything else you’d like to order to replace it?” That is literally the only thing that was mentioned about the incident. He didn’t want to order anything else and the incident wasn’t mentioned by the waitresses again, even when she brought the bill. Of course they didn’t charge us for my father in laws meal, but nothing else was said or addressed about the incident at all!!! Not to mention that our bill was still nearly $70, while the three adults didn’t even finish the food on their plates because of this incident. I’m shocked at the lack of attention and customer service considering this situation. The atmosphere was wonderful but the lack of concern for customer service was very apparent, which is surprising especially for a restaurant at this price point. I’m just plain disappointed with our entire evening.
First time there snd was very impressed. Food was incredible.
Jessop’s was neat dining experience. Service was great. One of the best beer selections both bottles and on draft. Crab cakes were good very little filler and the mussels appetizer was outstanding.
It was a wonderful experience, just like stepping back in time. The food was excellent as well. Great service!
We have eaten here several times. This was our second bad experience. We both had Fish and Chips which is supposedly their award winning meal. The fish had no taste and the chips were burnt.
Waited all weekend to have dinner here. Ordered their Shepherd's Pie, first time ever eating this. It was so so good!!! Huge portions. Actually everything from the appetizers to dessert were delicious!! If we are ever visiting the area again we will definitely be returning here!
