Jens' Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
mmm... so VERY delicious and tables have dampeners under the cloth. Even got my man into a button shirt w tie. Full house yet quiet enough to converse. Wait staff was humorous and conversational; willing to ask chefs.
Jens' FLUNKED the gluten free test on a dish SO EASY to make gluten free ! Alaskan fish chowder! agghh... almost cliff jumped. Creole shrimp on the cheddar grits was NOT GF... denied AGAIN... 2nd hit!!! But Chef took care of me w tomatoe saused shrimp... so the chefs DO know the basics!
All thickeners can EASILY be gluten free... read up! I've even taught myself to bake GF. ALL soups, sauces can be GF. Breads are much more difficult to make tasty GF so I do not expect it.
Have been eating at Jens since 1989
Went on the 30th because we thought New Year’s Eve would be too busy
Our order wasn’t taken for 30 minutes after we arrived. The appetizers came out pretty fast and before we were even half finished the main courses were in front of us. We felt like we had not been able to enjoy our appetizers or the mains would be cold. Very disappointed our server did not try to right the situation. It will be awhile until we go back
A group of us attended the seasonal Danish Christmas Dinner prix fixe offering at Jen's to usher in the Holidays. Jen's never disappoints those of us who are avowed "foodies!" Excellent dinner, superbly prepared with a wide range of perfectly matched flavors in a three course dinner. I say the wine list is "notable" not so much for the depth and variety available, but for the ability to pair excellent wine with the type of cuisine offered at this outstanding restaurant. Always a very positive dinning experience. Based on a previous recommendation I made, members of our group have returned to Jen's three times for the same dinner offering (not the Christmas fare -- which is limited based on the season) and remarked that rarely does one dine out in which every bite is accompanied by a sigh of appreciation and a silently articulated "yumm!" with each taste!
My husband brought me here for my birthday dinner. The ambiance was lovely and the service was very good. We shared the Calamari Piccata appetizer which was OK but nothing special in terms of flavor or texture. He had an entree of deer chops which he deemed “delicious.” I had the Sushi Grade Grilled Tuna which was outstanding. It was melt in your mouth tender and the flavor was marvelous. We shared a bottle of red wine that was the perfect accompaniment. The perfect ending to this memorable meal was a complimentary slice of their to-die-for flourless chocolate cake which they topped with a sparkler. The waiter took a picture of us with the dessert and before we left gifted me with a birthday card that included a copy of the picture! So very special!! We have eaten here for lunch in the past, but this was our first dinner experience. It will certainly not be our last!!!
Usually very satisfying meals at Jens, not so much this time. Four of us went, shared the tender calamari strips which were wonderful, as usual, but that charcuterie plate is outrageously priced for what you get. I mean, that was an appetizer for one, but cost 16 bucks, and nothing at all on that plate was special. Now, I had a pork chop meal there last year that was fantastic, so I ordered it again, expecting another dynamite taste experience. I was sadly disappointed. I really don't like answering the question "how would you like it done", because I'd hope that the chef knows how to cook a pork chop to perfection, and my idea of well done is not necessarily his. It was undercooked and very thick and fatty, and just not good. Not only that, but it had some kind of simple barbecue sauce on it, and was not the same as I'd had before, at all. Nothing noteworthy about this recipe, very disappointing. On the plus side, my dog got half a 30 dollar pork chop. I stayed up all night going to the bathroom and nearly got sick. Yeah, the pricing is pretty high here for everything, I mean, a plate of fettuccine is 22 bucks. But the service is good, the ambience nice, and so it's a good place to bring a date if you want to make an impression, I guess.
Excellent meal—our party of five sampled a wide range of dishes and all were very good. Jen’s is a pleasant spot for a leisurely meal with friends. Service is friendly and unobtrusive, wine list comprehensive without being overwhelming. The menu is short, which I feel is a good thing for a restaurant this size, as the kitchen can play to its strengths. Rack of lamb, NZ deer chops, scallops, chicken linguine—all enjoyed. And the “house” salad, usually an excuse in Anchorage to badly dress some Costco greens, was a treat! Berries, nuts, fresh greens, shaved cheese; superb. Desserts were fine, though the dessert menu could use updating. A minor complaint, if a complaint at all.
Great date night out. Outstanding dishes prepared perfectly. Excellent service with fantastic suggestions on wine and specials. A true gem in Anchorage. Don’t be fooled by the curb appeal. My wife and I gave it a try when we saw the great reviews on open table as well as other sites and found a new favorite place to eat in Anchorage. My thanks to the chefs and staffers for a great experience.
We have dined here quite a few times, both lunch and dinner. The food is creative and delicious, always. The atmosphere is understated and elegant, with the waitstaff being pleasantly unobtrusive and super competent. This restaurant is one of the best in Anchorage, don't miss it.
The food is quite good, continental/northern European and the staff and patrons are friendly. The staff know their menu and their long time loyalty suggest this is a worthy fixture on the dining scene. On my second visit, I only had one beef, at 10 PM on a Friday evening they turned up the music right over our table to an intolerable level in an unsubtle hint they wanted us to leave. Not in step with an otherwise excellent experience.
