Jean Claude 2
A true gem in the UES. Classic bistro cooking and great ambience
Love the intimate atmosphere. Delicious food with gracious service. Even though crowded, it was easy to have a conversation.
Loved the ambiance and attentive service when I dined with daughter two days ago. Food ( steak au poivre was not what I expected. Brown sauce on a thing sinewy steak.
The frites were ok. Daughters pork was a little dry. Crime brûlée’s
Was spot on. Would go back for ambiance and service.
Food was delicious and service was very attentive!!
This neighborhood friendly restaurant is amazing. The food is always on point. Service is great. One day when we leave this area, we will come back specifically for JC2.
Excellent French bistro with a good but reasonably priced wine list. Would highly recommend.
Wonderful dinner. Squid superb, lamb loin special tender perfectly cooked.
Lovely Great find
Jean Claude 2 was everything we expected to be. A perfect French Bistro. Food was exceptional, service was excellent, the staff very attentive and the price reasonable
What else could one ask for?
Staff was friendly food was good
Such a cozy and charming place for terrific French bistro style food and wine. The chicken was excellent and my friend enjoyed their skate. They did run out of the tarte tatin so that was a disappointment, otherwise it was a fabulous meal. We will be back.
Delicious and great service
I’ve been here before. Asked that the food not be spicy. Both dishes came with pepper on them. Ask them to take one of them back and it came without pepper but very salty. The food has been better here before.
I live around the corner and had a great experience before. This time is was one of the biggest disasters. Somebody spilled milk on a man in the table next to us and they did not apologize. We got terrible service, food was overcooked.
Bring back the old cook!
Friendly, efficient service on a bustling Friday evening. Server was responsive to request for “no garlic.” Carrot-ginger soup was smooth and velvety. Sirloin was flavorful and cooked to specification but a bit chewy. Peppercorn sauce was yummy! Will definitely return!
Although I find the restaurant loud, the food was delicious, the service was really very good (perfect glass of wine selection, dessert for me while my friend had a second glass of wine, price very fare for what was offered.
More vegetarian options would be lovely, the current one offered is insufficient and calorically can not account for a full meal.
Everything was great. the only disappointment was there was no bar just wine but we adjusted.
I wish you had maybe as an option here. We would have loved this place except that they seemed very short on waitstaff. We ordered a starter, two entrees and a bottle of wine. We ordered the bottle of wine because we were having two courses. The next thing we knew our entrees arrived. At that point we did not want the starter any longer. Had we been able to foresee how things would work out, we would have ordered two entrees and two glasses of wine. We would have had a smaller bill and skipped the disappointment. That being said, we would probably give this place another try if we were in the neighborhood.
Nice little French bistro. Good food, fairly priced.
I had dinner here with my family for Christmas and i had such a marvelous experience. Being that i am of French descent, it was refreshing to find french cuisine that resembled home. The staff was so inviting, satisfying our many demands. Soupe á l’oignon was our favorite;steak frites were very savory. I highly recommend coming here.
Second time I've been there since they moved from Soho. Had reservation for 9pm Christmas Eve. Saw we were running 15 min late so called and they said to get there ASAP since kitchen closing 9:30pm so we took taxi vs walking. My family/guests ordered hangar steak and pork loin which were good. I ordered onion soup which had great flavor but cheese was not fully browned. For main course, I chose mussels marinières, which are supposed to steamed with shallots, garlic, white wine and fresh herbs but dish I received was prepared in a cream sauce. Bread had no taste/was nothing special. There was only one other table with people when we were we were finishing our main course. No one asked if we'd like dessert or coffee as they clearly just wanted to get home for the holiday. That's fine but then don't open your resto on that night.
Hangar steak was very good and I did not want the potatoes that came with them so they were very accommodating and gave me fries instead. I had a beet salad that was excellent as well.
Jean Claude 2 is a gem - wonderful food with a charming, inviting atmosphere! We love it!
This is great neighborhood restaurant, the food is always excellent, the atmosphere is perfect and service is always with a smile.
host and server were pretty rude.
Our first time at Jean Claude 2 was mostly a success. For the first course, two of us had the onion soup, which was very good. The soup itself was quite flavorful; the stock was robust and the onion flavor was lovely while not overpowering. It came, of course, with a large crouton and a cap of just the right amount of melted cheese on the crock, but the cheese was just a little burned on the top, which takes a point or two off. Nonetheless, we would both order it again. One order of escargot (in the shells, prepare to do the work) was deemed excellent by the person who ordered it, and the salad our fourth ordered was also a hit. So, four for four on the starters. For dinner, the Poulet Roti was perfect, and the plate well put together. The special lamb loin was also a hit. Two of us (the onion soup eaters) had the duck breast, with mixed reactions; one quite liked it. The other found it a bit overcooked, and the wilted lettuce and mushroom salad underneath it on the disappointing side. So, three out of four on the main courses. The steak dishes ordered by people at the next table looked awesome, and on my next visit, it will be steak frittes for me rather than the duck breast. But there will be a next visit. The place is charming and cozy, the staff helpful but not pushy, and the menu traditional. A nice neighborhood find.
A very cozy restaurant with good traditional French food. A good neighborhood experience.
Always a winner
Tried with a friend and we were quite pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious - service was attentive and it was not over priced. The mussels were primo.
Lovely comfortable restaurant. Attentive service. Very good food.
It is always consistently good. Nice neighborhood spot.
Good bistro food and warm and friendly service.
It is a good choice in a wintery night!
Very good standard French bistro fare.
We liked and we will come back
Marvelous small French Bistro. It is a very warm and welcoming place. This visit(we come here frequently) we had the roasted lamb loin and Chocolate Mousse. A lovely Cote de Rhone and we were in 7th heaven. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal here. I wish they made their bouillabaisse more often. It is divine. My favorite entree is the duck breast and my husband's is the pork dijonnaise. For appetizers we alternate between the beet salad, escargot and the seared scallops.
Consistency is what you get when you come to Jean Claude. Good food at a reasonable price with excellent service. This comes with close quarters and a noisy place. Reservations are absolutely necessary on Saturday night.
Overall, a very nice evening. It was kind of last minute and they had a table so we gave it a shot without knowing anything about it. Busy but not chaotic with just the right buzz and the definite feel of a bistro.
Food was very well prepared. The foie gras appetizer we perfectly prepared. Get it while you can in NYC. The carrot/ginger soup was good but a bit more ginger would have been fine. The roast chicken was spot on as was the steak au poivre. This is true bistro cooking. If you want one of the 'Mother Sauces' you will need to go elsewhere. If you want some of the best fries I have tasted in awhile-you will be happy.
The wine list was adequate. We found a tasty bottle of Gigondas at a good price point that went well with our meal. The staff was professional and the prices are reasonable.
If you want a relaxed evening of comfort French food this fits the bill.
For those who will argue my 5 star rating of the food since I have heard that Bistro fare is never high dining then you try and recreate the roast chicken and fries. It is not as easy as it seems.
