One-part thrilling jazz club and one-part delicious restaurant, Jazz Standard serves southern inspired fare crafted by chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois. Sensational starters, such as the buttery trinity-stuffed shrimp, the smoked Alabama white wings and the roasted oysters with smoked garlic butter, are fun to share and clearly made with soul. Popular entrée items include the backyard barbecue chicken with brown butter sweet potato mash, the tantalizing baby back ribs with collard greens and the juicy blue smoke burger with cheese and bacon. Jazz Standard's southern inspiration continues in the dessert course, with decadent treats like banana cream pie topped with caramel popcorn, peanuts and caramelized bananas on a vanilla cookie crust.
If you are going to Jazz Standard for some live music and a drink, it also has a snack menu for lighter bites, such as homemade biscuits.
Big Chief a.k.a. Donald Harrison and Terell Stafford a.k.a. T-Staff were the perfect pairing for a weekend at the Jazz Standard! Big Chief brought it big from his originals to his New Orleans hits! Terell Stafford was the featured guest with the chops of a powerhouse Brass Master blowing out the uptempo numbers and the beautifully hypnotic ballads in the mix. Terell Stafford is the Top Trumpeter who leads with his horn whether it's his band or someone elses! Keep featuring Terell Stafford in many hit weekend features, Jazz Standard! Bravo Big Chief!
Tasty food which was excellent value for money accompanied by some fantastic music.
Wonderful night with good food, great ambiance and, overall, great jazz
The fried cat fish and the ribs were excellent. The waiters were efficient, courteous and helpful with menu selections. If you love jazz it's a must.
Great show, great food, great service, what more could anyone want. Best jazz show I have seen ever!
Great Jazz club where you can also have BBQ Dinner. But watch the suggested gratuity on the check. They suggest 15%, 18% and 20% of the entire check. However in my case 50% of the check was the cover charge for the entertainment. I don't think I should have to tip on the cover charge?
Jazz Standard is a unique combination of great food and great music. The updated menu is exceptional. Portions are large and the BBQ pit offerings are intensely flavored and satisfying. Service is friendly, attentive and professional. The quiet policy during the performance is respected by an audience that appreciates jazz. Always a wonderful night out.
The staff was super friendly and made us feel so comfortable. This was my first live jazz experience and i can't wait to go back.
The food experience was excellent..best fried chicken in my life and those biscuits. Ribs ad mac n cheese to die for
Had an enjoyable evening listening to jazz. This is a Jazz club that has 2-3 sets a night with a menu from their sister restaurant upstairs Blue Smoke. I had the brisket which was very delicious and my husband had the short rib which was phenomenal. We shared as a side dish sweet potato mash. It was delicious. We shared the banana cream pie that had caramel popcorn and peanuts on top of the pie. It was very good. The Jazz Trio was very entertaining.
I came here with some friends visiting from Toronto for one of their birthdays and we had an absolutely amazing time. We had dinner and stayed for the jazz show which was unbelievable. The food at dinner was to die for! The portions were extremely generous as well. Our waitress Sam was incredibly attentive and friendly. And the kitchen was nice enough to give us some complimentary snacks for the table. Definitely a very memorable night! I recommend this place to anyone who loves good food and music!
The brisket was 100% fat. Beer and spirits selection is awesome.
Buena noche con mi hijo, buena cena y buen jazz. Mejor imposible.
We go to the Jazz Standard for the music, not the food. We might come for dinner if there were a few more options for vegetarians, so that we wouldn't feel like second-class citizens cobbling a meal out of side dishes. The new menu is a slight improvement--more vegetable sides. I understand it's a barbecue place, but still....
Went to hear Azar Lawrence Quartet perform John Coltrane so food was secondary. Disappointed with menu changes made by new executive chef. Almost completely different. Sweet potato fries are gone. Got the ribs, good but not great. Brisket was good, got the marbled. They were great before. Miss the rib sampler which has amazing beef ribs. Will be back for music. but will not go to Blue Smoke anymore just for the food upstairs. too bad, it was one of our favorites.
…because now I can't give it even more stars. The music and ambiance remain top notch and Jazz Standard is one of the best date-night spots in NYC (although truth be told a few more jazz vocal bookings would be great). But a recent change in the kitchen has seen Jazz Standard revamp its menu. What was always delicious, in a somewhat down-home, comfort-food way, has now gained a newfound sophistication. Even the fried chicken stands out with syrup (add on some of the house-made hot sauce for a pleasant surprise). The new sides are a complete--and welcome--departure from what was there. The steak-cut fries are excellent; the butter beans are amazing. Sadly, we took so long to savor our dinner, we didn't have time to test the desserts. We'll have to go back soon.
The food was very good and the music was a nice plus.
We were a party of six so I felt the $30 cover charge for each of us plus the drinks and food made the bill too expensive.
There should be an adjustment on the cover charge with such a large party. Charge for 3 or 4 cover. I will probably not go back.
Great experience! First time hearing a live Jazz Band. I surprised my boyfriend and took him to this restaurant. It was different for us but we enjoyed it. Food was great and plentiful, the waiters were really nice and the band played well.
The place is a small venue with a stage. The music is wonderful. The service is friendly.
Our group of four girls wanted to have dinner and listen to some Jazz...Jazz Standard was the place to be. A little pricey, but over all the food and Jazz were great.
I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner and show. My wife and I expected a long wait for the food but we were pleasantly surprised that our order was placed and came in no time. We went to the early show and got in line about 30 minutes before opening. The food was excellent as were our seats. There were no obstructions to the stage. I see why Jazz Standand is rate very high as a jazz venue. The drinks were not disappointing at all.
While the food at Blue Smoke & Jazz Standard has evolved over the years - I'm not always sure the menu developments have been for the better - it is still among the best BBQ spots in the city. Add that to top-tier jazz talents, an evening at Jazz Standard will always be a great experience.
Everything was perfect. We really appreciate that you open a little earlier and let us eat before the music starts.
Awesome experience! Highly recommend! Although I was skeptical about the extra charge for seeing a show, but it was well worth it! The waitstaff is EXTREMELY attentive (not overwhelming attentive)! Highly recommend.
The Mingus Big Band was disappointing ... they wasted a significant amount of time during their short set.
Music was up close and very intimate. Service took way to long and the a/c made me feel like I was visiting Antarctica, thankfully the music warmed our souls
The Jazz Standard has the perfect blend of appealing for your ears and taste buds! The jazz is top shelf musicians who are sizzling with swing the entire set. The barbeque is succulent and smoked and music to your taste buds. Calling all jazz lovers who are foodies--The Jazz Standard is a must do weekend destination for a great night out.
We've come to expect great food, spectacular service, and unique ambiance from each of Danny Meyer's restaurants. Jazz Standard does not disappoint. Everything is exactly as it should be and prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food Nd entertainment.
The starters and dinner ; and the check took to long to come.
delicious food and great jazz venue - the jazz is front and center here the food is a delicious back story
Amazing performance that was enhanced by the acoustics of this club. The service was prompt and courteous. The food was outstanding. I recommend the baby back ribs but the brisket was well liked. The quiet during the performance was appreciated and the Martinis were to die for!
Consistently delicious food. On this occasion the softshell crabs, as well as the baby back ribs, were outstanding. But I am frustrated that no matter how early I arrive or how I plead with the wait staff, as happened the last three times I came, I waited for an hour with nothing to eat, and our dinner arrived after the music had started. But with such good food and music, we'll be back.
Booked this after reading a recommendation on Facebook. This was our first night in New York flying in from Stockholm, Sweden. Tired and jet lagged we did not expect much, but wanted something that was not the typical "tourist thing"to do. We both like jazz, but don't actually know much about the scene and we found the band playing that night (The Gil Evans Project) to be really good. Food was OK, typical American, but I would not go there for the food alone. We loved just sitting there, listening to the music, drinking beer and looking at the people that were digging the music. Some real characters. A really nice place if you want a genuine New York experience.
Nice place in a great location. The audience is mostly mature and not to mention that I am 57 and my wife is 54. We were in NYC for only a couple of days and the duo was not playing our favorite style jazz, but we had no choice. However, overall it was good music. The service was late and vague but quickly recovered when the check time got closer.
The food is always good, but it's the music that makes the evening. (Noise rating is really not applicable.)
Good music, great ambience, food ok, must have reservation, sit near to stage
Good food, cocktails superb service and entertainment. Always a winner.
Having come here often, we have high expectations. The appetizer salad was tasty but tiny. We were frustrated that we had to wait for over an hour for our main courses even though we were among the earliest to arrive. The striped bass and especially the short ribs with spring vegetables were delicious, but it was frustrating to eat them in the dark well after the music started. Our waitress apologized and offered to comp the appetizers so the negative score for service is directed at the kitchen.
It was a fun place to come if you wanted to listen to jazz for an hour with some friends. The food was better than I anticipated- the mashed potatoes were especially good. They also have a decent drink selection with some old-school faves. Be warned that you are more or less kicked out once the jazz is over so that they can get ready for the next group of people. It's not a place where you can linger.
Great food and fantastic music. Took my wife here for valentine's day - she is a jazz lover, and she was so happy with the experience. The ribs are fantastic, and the sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had. It can be a little cramped - it was a holiday - so depending on where you sit, there isn't much elbow room/room to spread out. But, still, we had a fun filled, music filled, romantic evening!
Where else in NYC can you hear great jazz and eat terrific barbeque? The food comes from Blue Smoke upstairs, and the ribs are fantastic. The jazz programs vary greatly, something for every taste. Good sightlines and acoustics. Never a minimum. This is my favorite place for jazz, and I am a born and bred Newyorker.
