Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar- LoDo Ratings and Reviews
This was our first visit to Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar, and we will definitely be coming back. We arrived during happy hour, and decided to order several appetizers as our meal. The appetizers we ordered were definitely big enough to serve as entrees. Our server was very attentive and gave great suggestions on the appetizers and wine. And the service was quick enough that we were able to enjoy our meal, and get to the concert on time.
Enjoyed the creative way the seafood we ordered was prepared. Five of us, each ordered an appetizer and entree. The appetizers we shared, we found each of them very appetizing. Everything tasted fresh, the plates were appealing. Our waiter and the host were very attentive and friendly.
Well, somehow I made it 56 years without being told how to eat....until tonight! I was scolded twice by our waiter. First, my wife asked for lemon, and the waiter insisted she try her fish before he would set it down. Then I was told I really missed the full experience because I did not eat all of my starch. Are you kidding me??? I have been to Jax several times, but there is no reason to go into a dangerous area to have an experience like this!! Food was very good....
We have dined at Jax in Boulder and in Glendale, but this was our first visit to Jax LoDo. We were not impressed. The oysters were great, no argument there. The shrimp in the appetizers were OK, not super. The Happy Hour Drink- sangria, did not taste like sangria; it tasted like soda pop. Two in our party had the lobster roll entree and were not impressed. It had very little lobster in it and mostly tasted like bacon. Could have been called a bacon roll. I had the monkfish, which had excellent flavor and sauce, but the piece included a giant bone, so there was really very little fish. I don't think we'll return for dinner; just use the rest of our gift card on oyster happy hour.
Interesting that the review offers only from "quiet" to "energetic" for the noise level. We would have called it rock band level, and when I went to the front host stand to request that the music sound level be lowered a bit, the response was "lowered?" We could hardly converse from one side of the table to the other. This seems to be the new standard in dining establishments to crank up the sound levels in order to be "trendy". The maxim goes that the louder the ambient sound, the louder people talk, and then the louder people talk,....... The food was great.
Really loud making conversation difficult. Service was slow. The staff admitted that it was a slow night. We saw our waiter chit chatting with other servers several times as we were waiting to place our order.
My salad (lettuce and dressing) was boring and not worth the cost.
I'd scoured reviews for an hour and a half trying to find the perfect place to have dinner. I hate to say it, I wasn't impressed. The food I ate wasn't bad, but it was nothing special. The two oysters I had was probably the best thing I ate. I had the calamari but asked for it sauteed -- looked like it was actually steamed instead as there was a puddle of flavorless liquid at the bottom of the bowl and no color at all on the outside. One of the dipping sauces was tasty but the other was like flavorless butter. I also had the panang curry mussels. Not much flavor there as well. Pretty underwhelmed.
The server was very nice and even comped my mussels since she got my order wrong the first time, but service was extremely slow.
Food matched the service - both great! We unknowingly went there during happy hour time so the value was great for some of the items on the HH menu. Our waitress even spread out the items we ordered so we wouldn't feel rushed eating and we'd have room on the table to enjoy the food. Quite frequently, we've been to restaurants where they bring everything out at once so we're left to rush scarfing down the dishes to make room for the other plates but she spaced our meal out perfectly.
Had our anniversary dinner at Jax in LoDo last Thursday night. It was very good, as is the usual for this restaurant. Our waiter, Jose, did an outstanding job and made sure everything was in tip top shape. The food is great, the atmosphere is great and that is what keeps us coming back.
Made a reservation earlier than we wanted because of the availability on the app. Had a horrendous drive to get there. Due to traffic and an accident on the main route, we had to backroad and got lost. Made three phone calls to let them know we were going to be late. Sonia, the hostess, graciously thanked us for calling and told us not to worry. They would hold our reservation. And they did despite the fact that we were almost one hour late. We got there, had an awesome dinner. The place is noisy. That is the only "complaint", if we were to call it that. We like to converse during dinner and sometimes it is boisterous. But the service, the food and the people overshadow any noisy shortcomings.
Waiter was excellent. Spicy ahi tuna poke was very good. Wedge salad was good. The oysters we had were also good. New England clam chowder was excellent. Brussel sprouts were good. Would not order either entrees again-Royal Red Shrimp Hash was not good-slight burned taste and not a fan of peeling my own shrimp; the special of the day lobster sandwich was dry, very little lobster and loaded with many toppings that seemed to be taking up space for lack of lobster. Anniversary dinner and waiter served complimentary champagne which was nice. Would only go back for apps.
