Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar- Fort Collins Ratings and Reviews
15 years ago we ate at Jax in Denver when we were dating. This was out 15th anniversary and we found Jax in Fort Collins. We live in Wyoming where where the only seafood is deep fat fried frozen shrimp. Our food was outstanding, the drinks were great and we got a free desert since it was our anniversary. The waitress was new but very competent and friendly. The manager came by to congratulate us. Very pleased.
The food is great. Blending traditional seafood dishes with innovative spices and flavors. The happy hour choices are a great value that truly satisfy while mixing up different foods. Oysters are always fresh and have excellent choices from each coast. The wait staff is always knowledgeable and friendly. One of our favorite spots in all of Ft Collins.
We had a wonderful server, one who answered questions and provided recommendations (it was our first visit). Without exception, the food was excellent - we ordered oysters, tuna tacos and shrimp for starters and scallops, fish and ramen soup for dinner. We also had dessert, mainly because the meal was so good, we wanted to try more (creme fraiche and s'mores). Prices are high, but we felt the value was pretty good, other than the scallops (absolutely yummy, but $32 for 4-5 scallops? A bit pricey). Everything is a la carte. Still - we went to celebrate Mother's Day, had a lovely time, enjoyed the food and experience and wouldn't hesitate to return!
We arrived a little late and had a show to attend. At first, I thought we were in trouble for time because our waitress was so attentive to the table next to us. As it turned out, she was attentive to us as well and managed her time such that we were well served and well fed with minutes to spare for time to make it to the performance. Well done, Jax's!
We have been to Jax many times and we have never been disappointed. The fish dishes are prepared well. The prices are reasonable and the specials are delicious. Their Happy Hour selection and prices are the best in Ft. Collins. This may sound strange coming from a Florida boy, but their calamari is the best I have tasted.
It can get very busy so make reservations. It can be noisy but a great place for a family dinner.
Wine list is not extensive but reasonable.
Happy hour can't be missed! The hush puppies are delicious, the fruit del mer was great and the 3 orders of snow crab was well worth it. Service definitely lacked on this occasion; our server was all over the place. Overall, a great experience thanks to the food!
We have always wanted to try Jax in Denver, but could never get in sideways so when we drove by the Jax in Collins, it was a no brainer to finally give it a try.
Such good food! We started with the calamari which was quite different as it was served over a combination of aioli and bbq sauces. I had my doubts, but could have eaten another plate full! I had grouper because I have never tried it before. It was served with endive, roasted brussel sprouts and pancetta over a beet puree. The grouper is not as mild as bass, but almost as flaky. The flavors were fantastic! Would order again for sure. My husband had the crustacean/butternut squash risotto. Again, the flavors were sublime.
We were there right at 5 before the rush and it was most pleasant. By the time we left, it was packed and much noisier. After all, there is a large bar and the best happy hour cocktails I've experienced, so I am not surprised that it packs immediately after work.
Food, service, location - it has it all. We will certainly be returning!
The manager let us try sips of 3 wines before we decided on a bottle,
and this was on 1/2 price Wednesday! 3 dozen oysters slid down
easily--recommend the larger Hurricane Harbor ones from PEI.
PEI mussels in lemon-wine-garlic-onion broth were delicious,
especially when soaked up with toast!
We attended Jax Fishhouse Fort Collins for Great Plates 2016. My family had a wonderful experience. Great staff. Quick service. And the food was excellent. The best calamari we've ever tasted! We will definitely go back and recommend to friends visiting the area.
We had a special occasion to celebrate and I had a yearning for sea food, so Jax was the place. Our appetizers were Oysters on the half shell and Calamari and both were excellent. The main courses were all wonderful as was the service. If Jax Fish House is not on your list, put it there.
Our waiter was excellent, and it was obvious that he cared about being spot on. My gin and tonics were perfect. Hard to get that. The steak was just ok, not much flavor and lots of fat oozing from the veg. I would lighten up on the sauces, just too much for being very rich.
Our waiter would make me recommend the place.
Our first visit to the Fort Collins location, have dined at the Denver location. We really liked the atmosphere, not too big but not cramped. Initially thought our table by the kitchen would be a distraction, but not an issue. Started with calamari, simple panko seasoning paired with a very tasty mango chile sauce, 3 of us shared, portion is a bit small for more than 3 people. Ordered one entree from the Great Plates menu, 3 courses; chose the gumbo, wedge salad, & Cioppino, all tasted fine, gumbo & Cioppino could have been better seasoned and portions left me hunger. Also ordered the Seafood risotto, generous plate of risotto compared to the amount of seafood. Third dish was a shrimp po'boy, by far the best plate on the table, full sandwich on a nice toasted bun and really good fries. The bun was so much better than the bread served with the Cioppino, which was dry a little too charred. Server Alfredo was great, in addition to the other staff that was in constant motion between the kitchen, bar, and tables.
My husband and I tried Jax Fish House for the first time and we're hooked! Our server, Kellie, was phenomenal! We've never had raw oysters and asked her which ones we should order, so our server offered to buy our first ones herself and really spoiled us with some amazingly awesome oysters. She took the time to explain how to eat them and really paid special attention to all of her tables. The nicest thing is that they don't rush you out of there to turn over the tables. Service is prompt and attentive, but really give you a laid back feeling of take your time and enjoy all there is to enjoy.
We also ordered some "food for the table" which included the cheesy poblano grits and hush puppies. We indulged in the grouper and the sea food risotto both of which were exceptional! Raving compliments to the chef and kitchen staff! Fantastic portions and excellent, excellent flavor! And I'm not much of a seafood lover... but I'd have no problem returning to Kellie's section and trying even more fish and oysters! Jax really spoiled us, complete to the manager taking time to ask us how our first oysters were and noted that we LOVED our server and the atmosphere.
We will return for sure!!!! New favorite!
It took an extra 45 mins for our table which we had a reservation for, but they were super awesome and got us a great table and free calamari for the wait. Very good service and very good food. They even modified a menu item to make it extra special for me:) An overall wonderful experience.
The food at Jax was tasty. I dislike seafood of all kinds, so I had a burger. It was delicious, and it didn't taste fishy at all (which was my fear). My husband had the grouper, and he said it was flavorful and good. For the price, however, he was expecting a larger portion size. Another member in our party had the same observation; his dish, too, was smaller than he anticipated. However, another friend with us had the Crab Duo, and it was an enormous amount of food (easily enough for two people). Finally, the desserts, although tasty, were very small. As in, one tablespoon of ice cream and a tiny tart.
