Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar- Boulder Ratings and Reviews
Top notch food, creative and perfectly prepared, a great place to find seafood 1000 miles from the sea. To me their absolute best feature is the staff. Our waiter (Justin) was attentive without being intrusive, and he volunteered suggestions based on our tastes. The icing on the cake was when, 5 minutes after leaving the restaurant, the hostess texted to tell me that my girlfriend had left her leather gloves on the table. Now that's class.
Jax is pricey but well worth it. Noisy, but so are most restaurants in downtown Boulder, and that just adds to the energy.
Full disclosure: I enjoy simpler, healthier, vegetarian food for the most part so I’m probably not the typical Jax diner. It was a special menu for Valentines Day. I was hoping for a menu with broiled fish and a fresh salad option without a lot of unhealthy junk on it. Unfortunately, such a thing wasn’t available that night. Each course seemed very rich, oily and fatty overall. I left feeling terrible and sick. Richness overload. My wife said she felt awful when got home. I spent $230 for dinner for 2 with 3 cocktails and tip. A diner who is more of a gourmet than I would likely love it. Those who like “cleaner” food should avoid it. But the service and ambiance are great. They did a great job of timing the courses and not making us feel rushed.
Delicious food! We tried most everything on the happy hour menu. The Oysters were perfect and we especially loved the Spicy Tuna. Service was A+. The value was just right for a fish and oysters. Very small restaurant so I recommend reservations. Highly recommended.
We were in town for a business trip and came for dinner. Oysters and dinner entrees were delicious. The "forbidden rice" was not my favorite - felt undercooked and too sweet. Drinks were a bit overpriced, but the service was excellent. Overall a good experience and would come back again or recommend for a nice evening out.
Jax is all around one of my favorite restaurants in Boulder. The food is wonderful! I had the scallops and they were cooked to perfection and the plate size is just right. Jax is a fairly small restaurant which gives it a cozy feel. The crayons for coloring on the table cloth is as far from stogy as you can get! The people serving the food seem more like friends than waiters and they are attentive but not hovering. I would pick Jax anytime I want to have a night out with great food.
Our third time here - usual noisy upbeat vibe and typically delicious food. However our waiter was stunningly unhelpful, dismissive and arrogant when we were selecting our mains. We looked at each other and almost walked out - however it was supposed to be a special night, so we persevered. Halfway through the night he started to turn on the charm, but it was too late.
We will not return to this restaurant and will no longer recommend it.
Jax Fish House is our go-to restaurant when we desire seafood in Boulder. This time we reserved an early table (reservations are a must) before going to a Boulder Phil performance at Mackey. Jax never disappoints us. We started with bowls of pumpkin bisque (my wife) and the gumbo. Both were excellent. (No surprise!) My wife ordered the Arctic Char and I had White Sea Bass. Both were prepared and presented perfectly, and delivered timely by our attentive and friendly waitress. We washed the food down with a very good Laurent Sauvignon Blanc. Since we had time for desert, we shared a very tasty key lime pie, which isn't always easy to find in Boulder. It was the real deal. The manager checked in with us a couple times to ensure that everything was to our satisfaction, which it was.
The review item that requests checking all virtues that apply is misleading in several respects. One option is to check Local Ingredients, but if the restaurant is landlocked, thousands of miles from an ocean, and specializes in fish, most customers would prefer eating fresh food flown in on a regular basis. My wife and I are included in this class. Jax has splendid fresh seafood well prepared and served, a creative menu of many choices, and excellent service by servers with a healthy sense of humor. The elegant desert on the house was welcome as well. We are strong fans of Jax, anniversary dinner or not!
I visit Jax every time we are in Boulder, it’s a favorite. I finally had my husband with and so excited for him to try it. Our waiter was the worst it wasn’t even a very busy night and he was shockingly inattentive and basically unaware. One member of our party ordered a second drink and another said I’m out I think I will get and hesitated and he simply walked away. The food was not up to standards this night either. I will go back but this time it was lacking and a waste of money.
We always enjoy the happy hour oyster menu, it is possible to get both raw and fried for a slight increase in price, so ask. the fried are great! jaxs is very well run and serviced restaurant and staff is excellent and well trained. Happy hour food menu is a very good value. Enjoy!
My daughter and I went to "kick off" the holidays and we had a lovely dinner together. Happy hour menu is amazing - we ordered from dinner and happy hour menu and we were both very happy with our meal and service. The calamari was phenomenal! We can't wait to go back.
